Romanian media
In the current context of seeing Europe as a “great family”, ethnic and social inclusion are very important topics. Always confronted with the presence of “the other” – stranger or only different – that demands to have equal rights as “we” have, the individual is more and more often forced to defend a symbolic territory that used to belong to him. The way we look at these “the others” is at the root of our actions toward them. And this also depends on the way that the society has formed us and shaped our principles.

The Magyar and German minorities, the biggest in Romania, are fairly represented in media, they are even looked up, as being hard-working, disciplined and well-organized and thus wealthy. As big minority groups, they have their national TV programs, lots of newspapers and magazines, they are represented in the Parliament and in the local and regional authorities, their activities, life and projects are objectively presented.

Main causes for the vicious representation of the national minorities in mass-media: I. Lots of superficial articles that minimize and distort their traditional and cultural reality; II. Reducing reality to only 2 poles (legal, il l egal, good , bad ) ; III. Editing incomplete and unverified information or extracted from the context; IV. Promo ting through mass-media only the negative sides of the group; V. Quoting as source of the information only formal representatives of the minorities, who have long lost contact with the minority they pretend to represent; VI. The monopole of some groups of interests that manipulate the audience, providing false problems and not the real important ones.
SOLUTIONS ?! Only one strategy was experienced with positive results: educating the majority population to manifest a positive discrimination towards the national minorities, together with a better organization of the ethnical groups, so that to stop or to isolate the anti-social actions that are in contradiction with the others’ efforts to integrate in the society. Key words: - positive discrimination - Electing informal leaders representative for the whole community, with real managerial abilities
