Writing Task 2
Presentation
By Lutfullayev Nurilla
What skills do you need to show?
• In this lesson you will learn about:
1.1 Task response and Coherence and cohesion
1.2 how and why you may practising band 6
Coherence and Cohesion
1.3 Under-use cohesive devices
Task response and Coherence and
Cohesion
The common problems at band 6 are:
• Not addressing all parts of the task equally
(addresses all parts though some parts may be not
fully covered than others)
• Not making your position clear (position is clear
throughout from band 7), and not making
conclusions clear (the conclusions may be unclear or
repetitive)
• Not developing and explaining your main ideas
(some may be inadequately developed or unclear)
Understanding the task
• Explaining the reasons why you agree or disagree with an idea
• Explaining the reasons why you believe the advantages of
something outweigh its disadvantages
• Explaining the reasons why something is a problem and what
you believe could be a good solution
• Explaining the reasons why you believe that certain effects
make a development positive or negative
• Explaining why you believe a proposed solution is, or not, the
best or only way to deal with a problem.
KEY IDEA: If you don’t apply critical thinking to writing task
2, you will not achieve band 7. If you believe that you cannot
afford to spend more time thinking and planning, then you need
to be sure you can afford to keep retaking the test.
How and why you may practicing band 6
Coherence and Cohesion
You might wonder how we can tell whether fossil animals lived
on land or in water, especially if only fragments are found.
Sometimes it’s found. Ichythosaurs were reptilian
contemporaries of the dinosaurs, with fins and streamlined
bodies. The fossil look like dolphins and they surely lived like
dolphins, in the water. With turtles, it is a little less obvious.
KEY IDEA: The language that you learn forms an essential
tool kit for your writing. Deciding that some of these tools
should be avoided is like a master builder declaring, “I’d use a
hammer to hit a nail, everyone does that, it’s such a cliche”. A
master builder would always use the right tool for job. In IELTS,
you must do the same to show that you have mastered the skill
of writing.
Under-use of cohesive devices
• When native speakers write, they do not always use
conjunctions and adverbial linking words and phrases to
clearly indicate how ideas are connected. The link must
sometimes be inferred by the reader.
• When native speakers write, they do not always use
conjunctions and adverbial linking words and phrases to
clearly indicate how ideas are connected. As a result, the
link must sometimes be inferred by the reader.
People are working longer hours than ever before. In
addition, the have more job pressures. People willingly
place themselves under these unfavorable conditions. The
worldforce is a competitive domain
