4. Adverb:Words which tell us how, where or when something is done.
In other words, they describe the manner, place or time of an action.

Quantity/ How much or to Degree what extent it is done.
Affirmation/ Which says yes if it is yes
Negation or no if it is no
Reason Purpose or reason for it
to happen

the types of adverbs
Adverb of Place:
Some words or phrases answer the question “where?” They are called adverbs of
place.
Examples:
1. The boys are playing upstairs.
2. The dog is in the garden.
3. I have lived here for about two years.
4. Is Bob still in bed?
5. His children go everywhere with him.
9. Adverb of Manner:
Some words or phrases describe the way an action is done. They are called
adverbs of manner.
• The girl answered all the questions correctly.
• He was driving carelessly.
• The plane landed safely.
• Jia plays guitar skillfully.
Examples:
10. Adverb of Frequency:
Some words or phrases answer the question “how often an action is done”.
They are called adverbs of frequency.
• The children always take the bus to school.
• I’ll never make that mistake again.
• He cleans his bedroom everyday.
• Dad polishes his shoes twice a week.
Examples:
11. Adverb of Time:
Some words or phrases answer the question “when?” They are called
adverbs of time.
• The train has already left.
• We moved into our new house last week.
• Our favourite T.V. program starts at 6’0 clock.
• I’m going to my new school tomorrow.

12. Adverb of quantity or degree:
Words that show – “how much, or in what degree or to what extent”.
• He was too careless.
• The sea is very stormy.
• I am rather busy.
• I’m fully prepared for the assessment.
• These fruits are almost ripe.
Examples:
13. Adverb of reason :
Words that tell about a reason or purpose of an action, are called adverb of
reason.
• He is penniless hence he’s unable to pay.
• She therefore left school.
• We stayed indoors because it was raining.
• I didn’t go to school since I was ill.
• We left early so that we could reach on time.
Examples:
14. Adverb of
affirmation/negation :
Which says yes, if it is yes and no, if it is no.
• I don’t know.
• You are surely mistaken.
• She truly enjoyed the show.
• He certainly went.
• He is naturally self-confident.
Examples:
15. • Tortoise walks slowly (manner).
• We will have our exam tomorrow (time).
• The accident happened on the highway (place).
• At least twice a year I used to go to the dentist (frequency).
• We all go for a picnic just for enjoyment (purpose)
• The sea is very stormy (degree).
• Surely you are mistaken (affirmation/negation).
