Ft Riley to host National Night Out: In conjunction with the 2012 National Night Out, Fort Riley will have its own community police awareness
event from 4 to 9 p.m. Aug. 7 at the Forsyth Neighborhood Center. The USO Fort Riley; Directorate of Emergency Services; Directorate of Family
and Morale, Welfare and Recreation; Picerne Military Housing; Army Substance Abuse Program and Unified School District 475 Geary County
Schools will work hand-in-hand to bring the free event to the Soldiers and Families of the installation. A special No Dough Dinner will take place
simultaneously. The USO Fort Riley will serve a free cookout style dinner and drinks from 5 to 7 p.m. Since 1984, the annual NNO has attempted
to increase awareness on topics such as police and firefighter programs, drug prevention, neighborhood watch programs and crime prevention.
According to the national website, NNO is designed to: Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, Generate support for and participation
in local anti-crime programs, Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, Send a message to criminals letting them
know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. More than 37 million people attended NNO in 2012 in about 15,000 communities
from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military installations all over the world. Fort Riley is hoping to see between 500 and 800
attendees this year, according to Maj. Tommy Kerr, chief of operations, DES. “Just like the national (NNO), we want to draw the community in
and provide them an opportunity to meet the local police that are providing this day-to-day service … see the human dimension behind the
uniform,” Kerr said, adding he hopes all attendees will walk away with a clear message on safety. Stephen Ragan, chief, FRPD, said he thinks the
event will play an important part in building partnerships within the Fort Riley community. “With the fire department and the police department
being there, it strengthens the ties between the two and shows that we’re there with the community. (NNO) is a valuable tool, as far as law
enforcement goes, and strengthening the partnerships that we have with the community,” Ragan said. The following activities will be available
for adults and children: D.A.R.E. static display, Bicycle registration, McGruff child identification system, Special reaction team static display,
Game warden static display, Traffic patrol static display, Fire truck static display, Fire safety trailer, McGruff, DAREN, the D.A.R.E. Lion and
Sparky the Fire Dog, Military working dog demonstrations, iWATCH booth, Children’s inflatables, Drug and alcohol displays, Seat belt
convincer, Motorcycle simulator, and Safety-related items to give away. Pets are strictly prohibited at this event. To learn more about NNO,

According to the national website, NNO is designed to: Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness, Generate support for and participation in local anti-crime programs, Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships, Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back. More than 37 million people attended NNO in 2012 in about 15,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military installations all over the world. Fort Riley is hoping to see between 500 and 800 attendees this year, according to Maj. Tommy Kerr, chief of operations, DES. “Just like the national (NNO), we want to draw the community in and provide them an opportunity to meet the local police that are providing this day-to-day service … see the human dimension behind the uniform,” Kerr said, adding he hopes all attendees will walk away with a clear message on safety. Stephen Ragan, chief, FRPD, said he thinks the event will play an important part in building partnerships within the Fort Riley community. “With the fire department and the police department being there, it strengthens the ties between the two and shows that we’re there with the community. (NNO) is a valuable tool, as far as law enforcement goes, and strengthening the partnerships that we have with the community,” Ragan said. The following activities will be available for adults and children: D.A.R.E. static display, Bicycle registration, McGruff child identification system, Special reaction team static display, Game warden static display, Traffic patrol static display, Fire truck static display, Fire safety trailer, McGruff, DAREN, the D.A.R.E.
