Avid readers of my
articles will know that I
hold our local
community and its
residents in the highest
regard! I am very proud
of where I live and the
people who I live with.
My aim, as it is with The Voice, is to try to
make our community an even better place to
bring up our children, grandchildren etc whilst
also looking after our elderly and those who are
not as fortunate as others. This is the bedrock of
society, for everyone to look to the future whilst
taking care of the present.
Readers will also know from my articles that
I have precious little time for politicians,
councillors etc – but I acknowledge there are
many excellent such people who share my beliefs
for local people.
However, I feel I need to have a say on
something which could prove to be a once-in-a-
lifetime opportunity for the youngsters of
Uttoxeter and surrounding villages.
My beloved Oldfields Sports & Social Club
nurtures a massive number of children and adults
in tandem with Uttoxeter Town Football Club
and Uttoxeter Rugby Club. It really is a sight to
behold on a Saturday or Sunday morning to see
hundreds of youngsters being taught by
dedicated volunteers of the respective clubs,
getting the kids away from computers and
carrying out healthy and active sport. I say The
Government should pay such clubs to do so!
Due to their success, Oldfields Sports Club
want to expand sports facilities at Staffordshire
County Council-owned land at Mount Pleasant,
Stone Road – just over the road from the club’s
2 sports pitches.
You would have thought the County Council
would applaud this initiative and allow their land
to be used for the healthy future of our sporting
youngsters! I believe extensive negotiations have
taken place but now the land could be earmarked
for sale for extra care housing for the elderly.
This is despite this land being struck off the Local
Plan for housing by the ESBC after protests from
local residents!
I know the County Council must ensure
provision for the elderly in Uttoxeter and I
appreciate they are between a rock and a hard
place, but surely there is land elsewhere...
I appeal to our Rocester-based Leader of
Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins, who
personally I have a lot time for, to grasp the nettle
and allow Oldfields Sports & Social Club to
expand onto the land at Mount Pleasant and
provide our youngsters with a wonderful
opportunity to enjoy sport throughout future
generations. This is the only piece of land
adjacent to Oldfields Sports Club which could be
used!
I have no political bias, I just think we can’t
let this moment go – because once this land has
been built on, our sports facilities for our young
footballers and rugby players cannot expand.
Let’s just take a thought on what has
happened over the last few weeks for a Uttoxeter
teenager who has made everyone in the town so
proud – young Adam Peaty was a TV star after
scooping 2 Golds and a Silver Medal at The
Commonwealth Games!
Sport has got to be the future for our
youngsters – please Mr Atkins, make it happen
for our future generations and allow the
dedicated people of Oldfields Sports Club to
expand onto Mount Pleasant – they and our
youngsters will be so grateful to you and the
County Council I can assure you...
I hope you enjoy reading The Voice magazine.
I’ll speak to you next time...

A
record field of 2,700 people crawled,
climbed and splashed their way around a
gunge-filled course to take on the challenge
of the 3rd Annual JCB Mud Run.
Participation was nearly treble that of last
year’s event with competitors coming from all over
the UK and beyond for the fun endurance event.
Ingeniously designed obstacles such
as a 100ft rope climb and
underground tunnels were combined
with natural terrain – including
woods, rivers, inclines and peat – for
the five-mile course on land owned
by JCB in Staffordshire.
But no amount of mud could
take the shine off the £50,127 raised
by participants for the NSPCC in
Staffordshire. JCB has recently
completed a £2 million fundraising
campaign which has helped to pay
for the charity’s new service centre,
Carole House, in Newcastle-under-
Lyme.
A cheque was presented to
NSPCC representatives by George
Bamford, son of JCB chairman Lord
Bamford.
George who took part in the JCB
Mud Run for the second year
running, said: “What a fantastic event and what
great camaraderie – the best I’ve ever seen.
Everyone was helping one another to get over the
obstacles and to get through the mud and water.
“I can’t believe so many people have turned
out. – 2,700 is an incredible number. And I’m so
proud of what we have been able to raise for the
NSPCC. It’s a staggering total. Well done to
everyone.”
NSPCC Stoke-on-Trent Service Centre
Manager Pete Turgoose said: “Thanks so much to
everyone at JCB for making this event possible.
This is the third Mud Run and JCB has evidently
tapped into something that people love!
“Getting filthy, having fun and doing some
phenomenal fundraising is a perfect combination
and we know that every pound raised will go
towards helping us run vital support services for
local children.”
First team across the line included Mark
Dalkins, Cheadle, who notched up an incredible
double. Two weeks earlier he was in Savannah,
Georgia where he also won the JCB North
America Mud Run.
The veteran roadrunner said: “It was a tough
course and a bit longer than last year’s and there
were more obstacles. It had been raining for 12
hours solid in the build-up so there was a lot more
water around, which made going underfoot a real
challenge.
“Having said that it was great fun to take part
in and the fact I was in America two weeks earlier
to do the JCB event there made it even more
special.”
London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer Dave Allen
– who works for JCB as a sales manager – was
crowned the JCB Mud Run winner in the
individual race with a time of 38 minutes and 53
seconds.
The 48-year-old of Tean, said: “I enjoy the off-
road running and this is a lot of fun. There were a
lot of challenges set by the course organisers so
well done to them. They got the right balance
between challenging and fun.”
Among those taking part were Daniel Skalicky,
23, – a professional ice hockey player from
Liberec, in the Czech Republic, who flew to the UK
to join his brother Michal for the Mud Run.
Michal, 25, who lives in Uttoxeter and is a JCB
finance graduate, said: “We had a great deal of fun
taking part. I told my brother about the JCB Mud
Run and he was keen to come over for it. He is
starting pre-season training back home in a couple
of weeks so this was a great warm up. I was not
sure what to expect but this was really excellent
and we’ll definitely be back.”
Other teams competing
included representatives from JCB
France, who flew in from Paris for
the event, and a Dutch team from
Van Leeuwan Pipe and Tube
Group.
Prudence Bradley, 21, of Alton,
who works at Uttoxeter
Racecourse, took part for the third
time. She said: “It’s great fun and,
what can I say, I just like getting
wet and muddy so I keep coming
back. I’m very proud of how much
has been raised for the NSPCC
too.”
Another competitor was Andy
Parry, 36, of Derby, who reviews
mud run events around the country
for the Mudstacle website. He said:
“It was really good fun, a good
range of obstacles, good terrain,
excellent facilities and everything was well
signposted. It was nice to see so many people
enjoying themselves at such a well organised
event.”
Meanwhile, Mark Hogg, 40 from Willenhall,
West Midlands, took on the JCB Mud Run dressed
as Batman. He said: “I’ve been here every year so
far but this is the first time in fancy dress. No one
minds that you are making a fool of yourself –we
know it’s for a great course and everyone’s in the
same boat.”
Record JCB Mud Run field raises more
than £50,000 for NSPCC
Left to right: George Bamford presents a cheque for £50,127 to NSPCC Service Centre Manager
Peter Turgoose and Kirsty White, of the NSPCC.

ST10 1LH
P
ainsley Catholic College in Cheadle,
Staffordshire is proud to announce that it is
one of the 32 new maths hubs announced by
Education Minister Elizabeth Truss. Painsley will
be working with partners across Staffordshire and
the Midlands to boost the teaching and learning of
maths in England and will help to shape the future
of maths education both locally and nationally.
Exchanges will also be made with Shanghai to
learn from their education system.
A spokesperson for the government said:
‘Education Minister Elizabeth Truss announced
£11 million for the new maths hubs to drive up the
quality of maths teachers - as international test
results showed England’s performance had
stagnated.
The money will allow the development of a
national network of 32 ‘mathematics education
strategic hubs’ (MESH). Each will be led by a
teaching school and will provide support to all
schools in the area, across all areas of maths
education, including:
• recruitment of maths specialists into teaching
• initial training of maths teachers and
converting existing teachers into maths
• co-ordinating and delivering a wide range of
maths continuing professional development
(CPD) and school-to-school support
• ensuring maths leadership is developed, eg
running a programme for aspiring heads of
maths departments
• helping maths enrichment programmes to reach
a large number of pupils from primary school
onwards
Other teaching school alliances and school and
college groupings in the area will be strategic
partners in the hub. The expectation will be that
all phases of education from early years to post-16
will be represented.
The Programme for International Student
Assessment (PISA) tests this year focused on maths,
with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation
and Development (OECD) comparing countries’
average performance in the subject with England’s.
The PISA tests show that England’s
performance has stagnated in maths and we are
now ranked 25th. England’s score in maths is now
495, compared to 493 in 2009 and 495 in 2006.
The OECD said England’s performance had
plateaued in the last 6 years with 1 in 12 of
England’s 15-year-olds failing even to reach the
most basic level.
The table is dominated by jurisdictions from
south-east Asia - the top 7 in maths are Shanghai-
China, Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Chinese
Taipei, Korea, Macao-China and Japan. Vietnam
is now ranked ahead of England, at 17th. The
performance of all these jurisdictions is rated by
the OECD as ‘significantly’ better than England’s.’
Mr Stephen Bell, Principal at Painsley Catholic
College commented “I am delighted that Painsley
has been given this wonderful opportunity. To lead
development in the pursuit of excellence in the
teaching and learning of mathematics is a true
privilege and we very much look forward to
working with partner schools across the Midlands
and the Country to enhance the numerical skills of
the young people in our care. We plan to be part
of a revolution in teaching and learning which will
help to put England’s mathematical attainment at
the top of the world tables.”

Lank’s Lore
By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin
Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters
T
hings have certainly changed in the town over
the years, and one particular aspect that comes
to my mind is the changes made to one of the
towns local newspapers, The Uttoxeter Advertiser or
‘Stunner’ as it is known. This has changed
dramatically since its establishment in the area in
1882. Even up to being taken over in 1994 by the
Burton Mail Group it had remained pretty much the
same in its format since the early days of its
conception. The Burton Mail Group started
producing the paper in tabloid format and printed it
in full colour and owing to their more modern
techniques allowed the news content to be more up
to date.
Prior to 1994 the paper was produced by Babb
Brothers at their offices which were accessed up an
alleyway at the side of the now HSBC Bank in
Market Place, Uttoxeter. In those days the paper was
a ‘Broadsheet’ in size and printed by the old
Letterpress printing process.
Even at that time letterpress production was an
old technology for producing newspapers and was
probably one of the last in the country to be done
this way. This involved the bulk of the text being
typeset mechanically by a Linotype Line Casting
Machine. The ‘Stunner’had two of these machines
which were ancient but still in working condition.
They were built in the early 1900’s by a great old
British manufacture the Linotype Machinery
Company in Altrincham, Cheshire.
These machines were certainly a joy to watch in
operation. They clattered and banged and churned
out lines of type in slug format which were then
assembled by hand into a frame (a ‘Chase’ in printing
terms) by hand by a ‘Compositor’ along with various
single letters of type for the headings and metal plates
mounted on wood which were used for the various
illustrations and photographs.
After the composition of the pages the ‘chase’
weighing several hundred pounds was lifted on to the
press by two strong staff members who secured it on
the printing press to commence the print run.
The printing press that was used was also a joy to
watch. In the early days an American Miele flatbed
cylinder printing press was used, this again was
ancient and the paper in broadsheet form had to be
hand fed one sheet at a time into the feed and was
then automatically delivered into a pile at the other
end. Production was started on a Wednesday and
completed on the following Monday afternoon when
a team of local pensioners were brought in to hand
fold the 4pp outer and insert the two or four page
(on a good week) supplement into it to complete the
issue ready for collection by a battery of local
newsagents eagerly awaiting copies to get on to their
shelves for sale to the expectant public.
The proprietor was a friend of mine Mr. Warwick
Babb who took over from his father Horace who had
purchased the paper in 1906.
Warwick, who was responsible for the running of
the printing machine replaced the original Miele
press in the mid 70’s with a more up to date press, an
Italian Nebiolo Flat Bed Cylinder press which would
feed the sheets of paper into the machine
automatically thus saving production time. Although
this press was certainly an improvement on the
previous one it was still ancient compared with the
machinery that was available at the time, but as
Warwick said it was fit for the purpose.
Although the paper would win no prizes for it’s
print quality, some of the type used was passed its
sell by date and no colour whatsover in those days
was used, it’s content was something else. People
used to scramble to buy it to find out who had been
‘Done’ in the special feature on the local Magistrates
Court that week, farmers would follow the livestock
prices in the weekly cattle market report and the
paper contained numerous editorial and
typographical mistakes which also gave it its appeal.
The paper still survives today, still as popular as
it was then but probably lacking the fun element that
it had in the old days.

Just the
perfect day...
After 18 months of planning, our wedding
day was finally here.
Having spent the Friday night back at my
parents’ home I awoke to a calm and very
laid back atmosphere.
The three hairdressers from “Second
Glance” in Uttoxeter arrived promptly at 8
am. Diane, Kerry and Jen soon worked their
magic and produced 6 very glamourus up
do’s... I had chosen to wear my mum’s tiara
that she wore on her wedding day 27 years
ago, something I know she was thrilled
about.
I opened my wedding present from Ryan,
which the best man had delivered the night
before... a most gorgeous pair of Pandora
earrings, how ever did he chose the right ones
!!!!!
We had booked two photographers from
“Imagination Photography” at Stafford.
Brian arrived promptly at home at about 11
am and soon started to take photos of my
beautiful “Justin Alexander” designer
wedding dress and of course my equally
fabulous “Jimmy Choo” shoes.
My mum and Emma helped me into my
gown, which I chose from ‘Bridal Couture’ in
Cheadle with the help of the lovely and very
knowledgable Josephine, it was a beautiful
ivory colour with a delicate lace body, a full
chiffon and tulle skirt and the cathedral
length train completed my “Princess” dress.
Feeling like the princess I always
imagined, I walked down the stairs to finally
show my dad my dress, as he had not seen it
at all, his face said it all, and although he
wouldn’t admit it I’m sure he had tears in his
eyes when he said” Wow, Katie you look
stunning, simply stunning.
My mum looked amazing in her gorgeous
hat which she had, had made to her own
design, from “Fascinate” of Uttoxeter, and as
always my dad looked very smart in his navy
morning suit.
By now it was quarter to twelve and three
most fantastic wedding cars were all waiting
outside, looking very posh trimmed with
white ribbon. Two of the cars were from
Nostalgic Wedding Cars and one from
Stoddards of Cheadle.
Mum and Emma put my full length
cathedral veil in place, I picked up my
bouquet which my dad had carefully made
for me to my design from antique brooches,
it also contained my grandmas locket and my
great grandmas marquisite watch face which
he de set to the time of the wedding and I was
ready to go !!!!!!
As I left my childhood home for the very
last time as Miss Fuller I could hear the
church bells ringing, which I had heard on
numerous occasions but today they were
ringing for MY wedding !!

When we arrived at church my
bridesmaids and ushers were on hand to
assist in keeping my dress dry and to put my
veil down. Waiting for me were my two
flower girls, along with my godson who was
also my page boy.
Having been so very calm all morning this
is where my nerves and tears started, so after
a few photos, I took my dads arm and walked
into church to “Canon in D major” by
Pachelbel.
As we took a slow walk down the aisle,
Ryan turned to look at me and at that
moment I just remember feeling incredibly
happy.
During the service, which was conducted
by the Rev. Irene Smith, we sang 3 hymns,
Ryan’s uncle read a biblical reading and my
grandad read a poem.
Both Ryan and I had learnt our vows by
heart and although I had few more tears
when saying mine, in no time at all we were
pronounced husband and wife and after a
few more photos we left church to
Mendelssohn s “Wedding March”.
I was by now carrying a very special posy
for a very special lady, my Grandma Dottie
who had passed away nearly two years ago,
this was placed on her grave in the
churchyard with the message on it reading, “
We knew you would be here today if heaven
wasn’t so far away”
My husband and I left the church in the
vintage car which I had arrived in and
together we took the short drive to “Park
Hall Farm”, Church Leigh. “Elegant Affair”
in Burslem had dressed the tables and chairs,
and what a fantastic job they had done. Ryan
and I also saw our wedding cake for the first
time, and wow we were not disappointed. It
was a massive four tiered, double layered
creation, draped with pearls and finished
with flowers and ribbon, Stephanie Crewe of
“Cheeky Cupcakes” had excelled herself.
Our favours were pots of home made
“matrimony” jam, which were home made
by me and my grandfather and for the
children, cake pops !!!!!!
Ryan and I had decided to have the
speeches before the meal, so our toastmaster,
Wayne Shelton, The Staffordshire Toast
Master, called for silence and introduced the
top table guests, he announced the new Mr
and Mrs Saunders to a huge applause, I felt
10 foot tall with my new husband tightly
holding my hand.
The speeches were fabulous. First was my
dad, who I think made everyone laugh and
cry, he spoke about my childhood and he did
the top hat joke to perfection. Ryan spoke
from the heart and made numerous thank
yous Finally the best man, Alex spoke, this
too was a very entertaining speech. After we
had all said grace, we dined on a three course
wedding breakfast which was provided by
the in house caterers, Dave and his team.
There was now time for a few more
photographs, some formal ones and some
informal ones, the moat, bridge and gardens
all made for a stunning backdrop.

Just the perfectday...
What seemed all too soon it was time for us to start welcoming our evening guests, our
entertainment was provided by “The Live Wires”.
What our friends and family didn’t know was that Ryan and I I had secretly been having
private dance lessons, so we took to the floor and performed a perfectly choreographed routine
as our first dance to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, off course we had ent practiced
this with me in a wedding dress, but Ryan did the big lifts with precision...
This was then followed by another surprise for our guests, the four bridesmaids, two of the
ushers and the best man dancing a totally brilliant routine which in one part saw my brother,
Ashley take centre stage, just as he likes !!!!
As a surprise for us my mum had booked a photo booth complete with a F1 background,
this was just fabulous, and along with the chocolate fountain we had hired from “Marsh
Delights”.
Before we knew it, it was time for us to leave, we said our goodbyes to our family and
friends.
We can only describe our wedding day as “perfect in every way” and it was wonderful to
share it with all of our family and our very good friends, all of which helped to make it so very
special. Both Ryan and I have many, many fabulous memories of our perfect day and we will
never ever forget them.
We had to wait seven weeks for our honeymoon, as both being avid formula 1 fans we had
decided to go to Monaco for the Grand Prix, which was beyond all of our expectations.

together with his wife attended its recent Champagne Preview Evening.
Among the guests were Rotary President and Mrs David Brown as well as
Councillor Colin Whittaker.
The popularity of the two day event which followed continues to grow
and the exhibition was particularly well attended this year. Visitors were
greatly impressed by the high standard of work on display and this resulted
in a large number of the paintings being sold. The Parish Hall was attractively
decorated with flower arrangements, and throughout the weekend visitors
were able enjoy delicious home-made refreshments. Part of the proceeds from
the exhibition will be donated to a local charity.

o not put your Camera away during the
dark nights, get it… and yourself…. out
and about, with
Cheadle Camera Club. We are
a small friendly club for
everyone interested in
photography, based in Cheadle
Staffordshire Moorlands. The
long established club now
meets at the Community
Room, Cheadle Fire Station on
Ashbourne Road.
We meet on the second and
fourth Monday in every
month, from September to the
end of April.
Everyone is welcome, from
long serving and experienced
members, to those just starting
out or having an interest in
producing better images and
using or displaying them. The
aim is not to let photos clutter up camera phones,
hard disk drives and iPads, but to be seen.
This season 2014/15 sees presentations and
practical sessions on getting the most out of your
equipment. Our first competition is “Landscapes”
- from the scenic rural and bucolic, to the urban
and industrial… any aspect of the great outdoors.
Techniques such as close-up or macro
photography will be explained, as will all sorts of
ways to achieve stunning images. Those
interested in image software will enjoy the
Photoshop nights and will get a chance to see
how to improve their images. Members have
ready access to advice on how to print, mount
and frame photographs, as well as equipment
loans and the opportunity to convert memorable
old photos, negatives or slides into archived
digital files for your family to treasure or share
online. Practical topics include
studio portraiture and lighting,
from Cheadle professional
photographer, Chris Lees: lectures
from renowned photographers
Richard Weston and Tony Pioli as
well as stunning visual treats from
our own Honorary President,
Dave Fernihough.
A few of our members are
planning to attend a national
competition on city photography
this year. So, if you fancy having a
go as paparazzi, possibly being
chased down the back alleys of
some city, this might be for you -
or you might choose the more
sedate cultural aspects, and find
yourself in an exotic China Town.
New to the forthcoming
season we are opening meetings 30 minutes early
(at 7PM) to allow members with questions to get
advice before the programmed meeting starts.
A club outing has been arranged. The
“Mystery Tour” will allow members to practise
their skills taking Macro, Landscapes, Industrial
and Architectural Photographs and perhaps to
learn by seeing the pictures seen by others in the
same location.
Everyone is welcome to our first meeting and
exhibition at the community room, come along
to a social evening. See some of members past
work, show us what you photographed during
this summer’s break. This is a great way to learn
about your equipment whether iPad, camera
phone, film or digital camera. See and view from
the most modern to vintage classics. Borrow
equipment and contribute your experiences to
others .
As a small club, we keep costs and dues
modest: membership is £15 annually and
visitors£2/night (refundable from the normal
dues if they become a member later). Join us at
the meet and greet first night on the 8th of
September. Until then, please take a look at our

A
mystery benefactor has made a £5,000
donation towards a £65,000 campaign to
send a young Uttoxeter boy for vital life-
changing surgery in the USA.
Five-year-old Kyreigh O’Regan suffers from
cerebral palsy – the result of having a stroke during
birth - which leaves him in constant pain, suffering
from muscle cramps and spasms and unable to walk
unaided.
He also needs a wheelchair to travel any
distances, performs daily physiotherapy exercises to
strengthen his muscles, wears splints day and night
as well as falling over multiple times daily and
sometimes badly injuring himself.
Seven weeks ago his mum, Sasha O’Regan,
launched a campaign to send him to St Louis
Children’s Hospital in America for a Selective
Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation which will end
the pain instantly. Due to NHS cuts it is unlikely
Kyreigh will be able to have the operation in the UK
but without the surgery his condition could
deteriorate and he could spend the rest of his life in
a wheelchair and in constant pain.
People had already dug deep to raise around
£5,000 and a number of charity events have been
organised in the five-year-old’s home town of
Uttoxeter. However, earlier this week the total raised
so far was doubled to £10,400 when a mystery
£5,000 donation was added to the campaign’s Just
Giving website.
Sasha - who also had a seven-year-old daughter
called Xanthie – said: “Kyreigh is in constant pain is
often unable to sleep through at night – it breaks my
heart to see him like this and I know it is so
distressing for Xanthie too. As his mum I know I am
never going to stop raising the money needed for the
SDR surgery which will end the pain he suffers as
well as enabling him to walk and run independently.
“But the £65,000 cost of the operation and
travel to St Louis is such a massive sum it is difficult
some times to know where it will all come from
however I will continue with the help of my
community to organise events and keep pushing
until we reach our goal - this £5,000 donation has
been a ray of hope in very testing times. It is such a
brilliant gesture and just the boost we need to keep
the fundraising momentum up. I can’t thank every
enough for what they have done so far.”
A quote from the anonymous couple,
“Having heard of little Kyreigh’s desperate need
of an operation to relieve his constant pain and give
him the opportunity to walk unaided and then
finding that his young mother, Sasha, is not only
bringing up two young children but also desperately
trying to raise the funds for the operation we were
compelled to help, who could not be.
We hope by us making a significant donation it
may encourage others to donate directly through the
just giving web site, whether large or
small, business or individual, Children or
Adults, every donation will make an
enormous difference to this lovely little
boys young life.
Please help Kyreigh if you feel you
can.”
Sasha, 24, and her partner Pete Turp,
32, have also organised several key
fundraising events in and around
Uttoxeter. They include charity football
and cricket matches, a sports
memorabilia auction and a black tie
charity ball at Uttoxeter Racecourse.
Burton and Uttoxeter MP Andrew Griffiths and
the Uttoxeter Lions and Uttoxeter Rotary Club have
also thrown their full weight behind the campaign.
Sasha said: “The way the town is coming
together is amazing - everyone I have spoken to has
been really generous and even if they cannot really
afford it they have donated money - it’s really
touching.”
“I just hope we can raise the money and Kyreigh
can have the operation as soon as possible. The
sooner we raise the money the sooner my son can be
free from pain, walking independently and wearing
the football boots he has always wanted and go out
to play in them.”
To make a donation visit
www.justgiving.com/kyreighskause/
People can also donate by texting KYRE80
followed by the sum to 70070.

Nathan is a local estate agent, with over16 years
of experience in the residential sales and lettings
market.
W
hen selling your property, one of the most
important elements to achieving a sale, and for
optimum value is timing. Spring (Feb/Mar) and
Autumn (Sep) are the key times to sell your property when
traditionally demand outstrips supply and therefore prices
are usually at their most buoyant.
Therefore, now is the time to start thinking about
bringing your property to the market, or changing estate
agents in time for the second peak of the year in September.
Nathan Anderson-Dixon’s Selling Tips
Know your buyer
To achieve the best possible return from advertising it’s
important to build a profile of your target audience, who
might buy your property and what appeals to them.
Then try to tailor your space to appeal to the main
group without alienating other groups that might also be
interested. For example; if you feel a professional couple
would be ideal, then turn the 2nd bed/office back into a
bedroom and make a space for a workstation elsewhere in
the house. The house would still appeal to a couple with a
small child.
Spring (Feb/Mar) and Autumn (Sep) are the key times to
sell your property when traditionally demand outstrips
supply and therefore prices are usually at their most
buoyant.
De-Clutter and De-Personalise
Potential buyers need to imagine themselves living in
your house, so get rid of ornaments and photos - especially
posters in kids’ bedrooms. Put things you don’t really use on
a daily basis in the attic or storage. Large pieces of furniture
should also go into storage; this will make rooms feel much
bigger. Focus on the hallway - clear away coats/clutter; the
bathroom - hide all your products; and the kitchen - clear
the bench surfaces of appliances, jars, tins, etc, and replace
any ragged tea towels or smelly bins.
Valuation & Selling Prices
Valuing property is not an exact science and many
factors are taken into consideration. Agents don’t charge
for valuations, so try to get 3 as a minimum. By using a tool
such as a Property Report you will have a headstart on
establishing the right price for your property. Take your
report along to your chosen Estate Agent, and you should
then be able to agree a realistic price for your property
based on your report together with the agent’s comparables.
Get the Word Out
Always have a board up, and tell your neighbours -
word of mouth is a powerful tool. You never know who
might live just round the corner, waiting for your house to
come to the market. Also, choose an estate agent that uses
all the main portals, including social media like facebook
and twitter. That way you can share your property with
friends to create further interest.
Preparing for Viewings
Everyone knows that first impressions count, and you’ll
want the house to appeal to as many people as possible; the
more people there are who like the property, the higher the
selling price should be. So sweep up, and make sure the
front yard and hall to your house are tidy and inviting.
Leave the pets with a neighbour, and thoroughly clean up
any cat hair in particular, as many people are allergic to
animal hair. Turn the lights and heating on; air out the
house; and don’t smoke or cook a curry before viewings. If
you’ve got parking, leave the space free for the buyer - this
will add to the whole experience.
Showing a Property
You’ll probably be paying an agent to do this; they
know their job, so I always recommend that property
owners go out during viewings. If you must show your
property yourself, then decide beforehand what order you
will show the rooms, and guide viewers around the
property once, showing the best rooms first or last. Don’t
overload them with detail, such as the size of your boiler or
the trouble with the neighbour’s cat. Be business-like during
the first viewing; if someone is interested, you can always
get to know them a little more on the second viewing.
Never point out problems or issues, but do feel free to
highlight the odd positive point, like a south-facing garden,
or very convenient parking. Finally, invite viewers to take
another tour round the property on their own... but don’t
go off and make a phone call - be somewhere nearby, on
hand to answer queries.
Accepting Offers
Your agent will be the middleman and should present
every offer that is made. Insist that the agent has all the
background information to hand on the buyer’s position,
and the ability to move quickly and ask that offers be made
in writing. Market conditions, competition and how much
the buyer loves the property will determine what the buyer
is prepared to offer. Similarly, the price you will be prepared
to accept will depend on market conditions; how quickly
you need to sell; and the size of your moving budget.
Compromise on both sides is often the key to securing a
deal. Also, know whether you want to keep all your
furniture, curtains and white goods, as many of these items
may not suit your next home, and can be used as effective
bargaining tools to get the price you want.
If you have been on the market for a number of weeks,
and are now thinking of changing estate agents, always
check you contract first to make sure you are out of the
initial sole agency period. If you are unsure take
professional advice.

The seventh RBA Wealth Management Charity Golf Day took place on
Thursday 10th July 2014, at Morley Hayes Golf Club in Derbyshire.
RBA Wealth Management, a team of financial planning and wealth
management specialists, based in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, has recorded its
most successful golf day event to date where they exceeded last year’s target
of £6,500 with a new record of £8,000. All efforts and funds raised have been
in honor of their chosen charity for 2014, ‘Little Hearts Matter’.
Little Hearts Matter (LHM) is a Birmingham based charity, which support
families whose child has been diagnosed with half a working heart and is a
charity that has a close personal link to RBA. Angela Fountain, Director of
RBA Wealth Management, has personally been supported by this charity when
her own daughter, Ruby, was diagnosed with Tricuspid Atresia at 18 weeks
into Angela’s pregnancy.
Little Hearts Matter are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. They
solely rely on donations from the public and businesses, offers support and
information, and raises awareness of those affected when a child is diagnosed
with a life threatening heart defect. Over the last year they have been able to
support over 3,500 people who live with these heart problems every day and
receive up to six new referrals each week. For more information about the
charity please visit www.lhm.org.uk.
The splendid British summer weather, beautiful Derbyshire views and the
challenging 18-hole course at Morley Hayes golf club provided an excellent
experience for RBA’s team and 40 guests who participated in the charity event
this year. The day went exceptionally well and RBA would like to thank all
of those who took part on the day and their clients, who have been extremely
generous with their donations.
A selection of first class raffle prizes were donated by the following local
businesses: PJD Engineering, Hungry Horse, FBT, Edmonstons Butchers,
Opulence, Denstone Hall Farm Shop, The Boars Head, Sarah Heathcote
Beauty, Emma Bridgewater, Alton Towers, The fashion Parade, Asda, L’Oreal,
Morley Hayes Golf Club, Uttoxeter Valeting Centre, The Marjorie Centre,
Emilie Duclos, Essentials Clothing.
Golf tee’s were sponsored by the following companies: ACE, Anthon
Marlow, Blythe Insurance Brokers, Bowcock & Pursail, Cowlishaw &
Mountford, D & G Buses, Dalton Garages, M J Lavin & Sons, MHA
Accountants, P & Y Commercial Consultants Ltd, RBA Wealth Management,
W Boulton Construction.
RBA Wealth Management provided prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed
golfers, nearest the pin and longest drive winners. Results are as follows:
1st Place – Carl Powell & Mark Mitton
2nd Place – Steve Shaw & Jim Maxwell
3rd Place – Andrew Hackney & Paul Johnson
Longest Drive – Shaun Campbell
Nearest the Pin – Gordon Watt
Special thanks to Carl Powell, Director of Briton Fabricators and winner
of the competition, who donated £1,000.
Angela Fountain, Director of RBA said, “This year’s golf day has proved
a real success; it’s been our biggest golf day to date raising more than ever
before. We were blessed with great weather and everyone seemed to enjoy
their day. Little Hearts Matter has been invaluable as a contact for advice and
support right from the day we were given the unexpected news that our
unborn child was going to be born with only half a working heart. LHM
helped us understand what this diagnosis meant for our daughter and what
sort of life she would lead. We are very lucky that Ruby has bounced back
from each stage of her operations, is a bundle of energy and looking forward
to starting school in September this year. LHM still continue to be to be a
source of ongoing support and the work they do is absolutely fantastic.
Over our seven golf days so far we have raised just shy of £30,000 for
some important charities; in addition we have given grants to smaller charities
via the St. James’s Place Foundation. We are keen to keep progressing our golf
day and our overall involvement in local charity work. We would like to thank
everybody who has been involved in this year’s event for their support and
generosity in raising monies for this great cause.”
If you would like to take part in next year’s golf event and try to break yet
another record or you would like to make a donation then please contact
Serena White on 01889 568444 or email serena.white@sjpp.co.uk.

Long-serving pair given
fitting send-off after 75
years combined service
A
special lunch was held to mark
the retirement of two JCB
stalwarts with over 75 years of
combined experience.
The careers of Dave Johnson and
George Line were celebrated at the
company’s World HQ in Rocester
ahead of their retirement recently. The
pair, who joined JCB just six months
apart, held a variety of positions with
the company before their final roles
saw them work together in logistics.
George, 62, of Uttoxeter is looking
forward to walking in the Peak District
with his wife Jill when he calls time on
almost 38 years - having joined JCB in
September 1976.
He said: “It was all done from one
shop when I started, and now JCB is
massive, but the company’s values have
stayed the same.”
Dave, 63 – or ‘Jolly’ as he is known
– joined in March 1977 and is now
looking forward to a two-month visit
to Adelaide in Australia with wife
Joyce later this year to catch up with
their daughter Emma.
Reflecting on his career Dave, who
grew up in Foxt but now lives in
Uttoxeter, said: “I’ve had a great career
thanks to JCB and its permanently
friendly atmosphere – it’s been a great
place to work. Admittedly JCB has
changed a lot over the years, but only
for the better.”
Andrew Brindley, Logistics Group
Leader at JCB, said: “Both George and
Jolly are hard-working and it has been
a pleasure working with them They
will be sadly missed. We wish them all
the best in retirement.”

S
ixteen local
women and men
from Uttoxeter
BFITT signed up for
The JCB Mudrun in
July. The main aim
was to support
husband and wife
team James & Louise
Brown from
Uttoxeter who sadly
lost their first born
son Lewis Brown to
Sudden infant death
syndrome at just
eight weeks old, leaving them both totally devastated.
James and Louise should have been celebrating Lewis’s 5th birthday the
day after the Mudrun which ironically was held on the 5th of the month.
Instead they were out running the 5 mile run through the muddy obstacles
to raise money and awareness for a charity which has helped them to come to
terms with the loss of there beautiful baby boy, and has support them both
going forward and having more children.
Louise said “the charity has given us so much support since having two
more sons Ethan and Spencer”.“We just wanted to give something back to the
Lullaby Trust, so that they can continue to support families unfortunate
enough to find themselves in
a similar position as
ourselves. We wanted to do
our little man proud by
completing the run”.
BFITT members wanted
to stand together to support
one of their own members
going through such a tough
time, and we couldn’t think
of a better way than to do
the Mudrun with them. We
each took sponsor forms into
our places of work and
found even more support
with “Bfitt, JCB and Midway
Academy” all helping us out
with sponsorship.
The Old Star held a
charity bucket night for
Louise & James raising
£233.70 and Midway
Academy donated this year’s
money from the summer fair
£550
Louise said “We can’t
believe the local support that
we have received, we really
want to thank the people of
Uttoxeter for their
generosity, we really feel that
we have done our little man
proud”.

Talking Pets
by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS
Shosh qualified from the Royal Veterinary
College in London, and has been working as a
small animal vet at Blue House Veterinary Centre
in Biddulph since 2009. She recently acquired a
rescue cat named Bagpuss.
I
know hairballs/furballs have traditionally been
considered a normal part of cat physiology.
However, nowadays that idea is going out the
window. As far as many experts are concerned,
frequent hairball vomiting is a sign of a digestive
tract problem until proven otherwise.
Is it hairballs?
Sometimes there is a little confusion over this. If
your cat brings up a clump of hair, that’s a hairball.
If they bring up food or bile with a few strands of
hair, or no strands at all, that’s not a hairball - it’s
just vomiting. They are unlikely to be trying to
bring up a hairball. If they are coughing or
wheezing, I’d be more concerned about a problem
such as feline asthma and they need to see a vet;
they are very unlikely to be trying to bring up a
hairball. Cats do not ‘cough up’ hairballs from
their lungs; they vomit them up from their
stomachs, and usually the hair only comes up by
coincidence. The cause of the underlying vomiting
needs to be addressed.
Cats spend 25% of their waking time
grooming. The little barbs on their tongue catch a
lot of hair, so overall a lot can get swallowed. This
is usually passed out in the faeces and is generally
considered normal. Cats have evolved to ingest
large amounts of hair through grooming, not to
mention that they are able to handle small furry
creatures such as mice.
There have been no large studies on the
incidence of hairballs in domestic cats. Small
surveys have suggested that around 10% of short-
haired cats suffer with the frequent elimination of
hairballs; this figure doubles for long-haired cats.
So, what can cause hairballs?
There are two main causes:
1. Ingesting too much hair
• fleas
• itchy skin conditions
• overgrooming, for example due to stress
2. Abnormal movement of the upper digestive
tract
• unsuitable diet
• bowel disease, for example inflammatory
bowel disease
• chronic pain or stress
Generally, when we see cats who bring up a lot
of hairballs, we’re thinking of chronic gastro-
intestinal (GI) disease as the first thing to rule out.
What are the consequences of hairballs?
Normally, hair in the stomach is passed out
through the intestine and ends up in the stool. If
there is too much hair in there, the ball becomes
too big to pass and it is vomited back instead. Too
much hair will gather in the stomach if it is
ingested in large amounts, or if the stomach isn’t
contracting properly to push it through.
Occasionally, a hairball can be vomited up into
the back of the nose and lodge there. This results in
nasal discharge, sneezing, retching and foul breath.
If a hairball becomes so large that it cannot
physically be vomited up, it will sit in the stomach
or intestine indefinitely. This can obviously cause
an intestinal obstruction. Hairballs that are present
in the digestive tract for long periods can
eventually become mineralised - ie calcium is
deposited in the fibres and the hairball turns hard.
Mineralised hairballs are even harder to pass or
vomit and cause more severe symptoms.
What to do next if your cat brings up a lot
of hairballs?
Speak to your vet. As mentioned above,
frequent hairball vomiting points to GI disease
until proven otherwise; investigations and/or
treatment may be necessary. The diagnostic work-
up for chronic GI issues often begins with blood
tests. Faecal tests, ultrasound scans and biopsies
may also be recommended. Diet trials or
medication trials may also help reach a diagnosis.
Vets will often recommend trialling a bland diet
first. Diet-responsive GI disease is very common in
cats. Swapping to a bland diet may reduce
hairballs.
What about hairball diets?
‘Hairball Control’ diets contain high levels of
insoluble fibre, to improve stomach motility and
enhance the emptying of the stomach. This should
make it easier for hairballs to pass. There is also
belief that the larger kibble size with these diets is
associated with increasing the chances of hairballs
exiting the stomach. There are no studies into the
effectiveness of Hairball Control diets, but
anecdotally they seem to work. However, switching
blindly to one of these risks missing any underlying
issues, plus a lot of them are dry food and may not
be the best thing for cats.
What else can be done?
Daily grooming to remove loose hair (especially
in long-haired cats) is important. Severe cases may
require a full ‘lion clip’ to reduce the coat to a
length that better represents what the cat’s
digestive tract evolved to handle.
Small, frequent meals encourage better
emptying of the stomach, hopefully passing
hairballs through.
Lubricants (such as Katalax or plain old liquid
paraffin) are a controversial suggestion. They may
be worth a try; they are odourless and tasteless so
often go down well in food.*
There are also medications available that
increase stomach motility. Speak to your vet about
these.
*IMPORTANT: please never syringe liquid
paraffin into your cat’s mouth. Aspiration into the
lungs is a real risk and extremely dangerous if it
occurs. Always give it mixed in with food.
Down on the Farm
by Angela Sargent
T
his month will see farmers starting to
combine the results of many months work
and investment as the wheat, barley and
other cereals are ready.
Tractors and machinery will have been cleaned
and overhauled, parts replaced through wear and
tear and sheds/silos cleaned and disinfected to meet
storage requirements
Keeping the stored crop pest free is
important(as not only humans want to eat the
crop) and standards have to be met.
There are so many regulatory bodies who want
to check that everyone is doing as they should-
some unannounced and some who give
warning-farmers don’t have to necessarily let them
come in but we would lose money/ assurance etc if
we didn’t.
Grass growth is slowing as we get towards the
end of summer and it is getting past its best and
most palatable stage -the pollen count has been
particularly high for a prolonged period this year
(much to the discomfort of hayfever sufferers!).
Black grass, an invasive weed of arable land,
can swamp the crop and make it unviable-it is very
resistant to herbicides and used to be controlled by
burning the stubble/cultivation of the soil
immediately after harvest. The seed can be carried
from field to field on machinery (or farm to farm).
Straw is useful for livestock farmers-both as a
feed and for bedding, so it is conserved in bales,
but in areas where there is little livestock and prices
are such that it is costly to transport, it is chopped
and incorporated back into the soil.
Aphids bother cereal crops too, just like in the
garden and all attacks from pests affect the yield
and, therefore, profitability. Ladybirds eat Aphids
whilst both larvae and adults, but I haven’t seen
any around just lately.
The Seven-spot Ladybird is native and quite
small, but there is another more aggressive, bigger
one-Harlequin Ladybird, which was originally
introduced for Aphid control, but it has gone on to
decimate our native ladybugs too!
Surprisingly, when going to get something from
our tool shed, one afternoon recently, hubby came
rushing out exclaiming there was a barn owl
flapping round his head! Obviously hunting for
something- probably mice, it didn’t linger and flew
out shortly afterwards!
Talking of mice- we had an Inspector call round
to check on our environmental schemes and, whilst
looking at the newly planted apple trees, we
noticed the younger ones had been nibbled(we
thought by caterpillars ) but on further
investigation(and finding a small pile of droppings)
I think it might be mice responsible too!

Strawberry Daiquiri Cupcakes
I
thought it was about time I did another of my
cocktail cupcakes. I made twelve and took
them around to my lovely neighbour, and we
devoured the lot! The puree in these cupcakes is
also delicious eaten alone with vanilla ice cream.
To make 12 cupcakes you will need the
following:-
Strawberry and rum puree
500g strawberries
50g caster sugar
1 tsp cornflour
50ml white rum
Cupcake Lime sponge
230g unsalted butter
230g caster sugar
4 eggs
25g cornflour
230g self raising flour
1 ½ tsp baking powder
2 limes, juice and zest
Rum Icing
1115g unsalted butter
60ml white rum
500g icing sugar
1 tbsp lime juice
zest of 1 lime
12 strawberries to decorate
Preheat the oven to 160˚C fan. Line a 12 hole
muffin tray with muffin cases. Firstly make the
puree by blending the strawberries, sugar and
cornflour until smooth. Cook over a medium heat
for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. When
removed from heat, stir in the rum and allow to
cool.
To make the lime sponge, cream together the
butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the
eggs, gradually and mix well. Add the flour,
cornflour and baking powder, alternating with the
lime juice and zest. Spoon the batter into the
muffin cases, filling each one about two thirds full.
Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes until
slightly raised and golden. Remove from oven and
cool in tray for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a
wire rack to cool completely. When the cakes are
cooled, cut out a teaspoon sized piece from the top
of each one and fill with the puree.
To make the icing, blend together the butter,
rum and half the icing sugar until combined. Add
remaining icing sugar along with the lime juice and
zest and beat until smooth. Use this to ice the
cupcakes and decorate with a fresh strawberry.
Enjoy, and try not to eat too many!

Strawberry and passion fruit pavlova
A
t this time of year there is an abundance of
fruit in all the shops, especially strawberries.
What better way to put them to good use
than a strawberry pavlova. This is one of my
favourite desserts and it always goes down well at
any event or party.
Providing you follow a few simple rules when
preparing your meringue, you will be rewarded
with the most simple but impressive dessert. These
rules are:
• Ensure your mixing bowl and whisk are
squeaky clean. as any trace of grease will result
in the egg whites not whisking up properly.
• Crack each egg 1 at a time into a small bowl
first before adding to the large bowl. This is
incase you break any yolks, as the slightest trace
of yolk will also prevent the whites from
whisking up properly.
• Be patient when adding the sugar. The reason
for adding it so slowly is to ensure it dissolves
properly between each addition to avoid having
a grainy meringue.
For a 9inch round dessert, the ingredients are
as follows:
Baking parchment or
‘BACO’ baking paper
(avoid greaseproof paper
as it tends to stick)
4 large egg whites
8oz caster sugar (don’t use
granulated as it does not
dissolve as well as caster)
2 level teaspoons cornflour
2 teaspoons white wine
vinegar
300ml double or whipping
cream (I prefer whipping
as its not as likely to
become over whipped if
you lose concentration!)
Punnet of strawberries,
halved or sliced
1 passion fruit, sliced in
half, with the contents
scooped out.
Method
Pre heat the oven to
160˚C/fan 140˚C/gas mark
and then place a sheet of
baking parchment/paper on a tray.
In a large clean bowl, add the egg whites and
whisk until stiff. A tip to know if you have whisked
enough is that you should be able to turn the bowl
upside down and none of the meringue will move.
Under whisking at this stage will result in a floppy
runny mixture once the sugar has been added.
Add the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking
for around 30 seconds or so inbetween each
spoonful.
Once all the sugar has
been added, mix together
the vinegar and cornflour
in a separate small bowl.
Once the flour has
dissolved, whisk the
mixture into the meringue.
You should now have a
lovely thick glossy mixture
with stiff peaks.
Using a large spoon,
blob the mixture onto the
baking paper bit by bit, in
the shape of a circle. Try to
build up the sides if you
can so they are higher than
the middle.
Place in the oven and
immediately turn down
the heat to 150˚C/fan
130˚C/gas 2
Bake for about 1 hour
until it feels firm and is a
pale beige colour. Turn off
the oven and allow to cool,
overnight if possible. Keeping the oven door left
closed when cooling will encourage a
marshmallow consistency in the middle whilst
staying crispy on the outside.
Carefully remove the baking paper and place
on a serving plate.
Spoon on the whipped cream and chopped
strawberries. I usually dribble the passion fruit on
just prior to serving to keep it looking fresh.
Finally, dish up and enjoy! Delicious

First Glastonbury – next stop Lark in the
Park
It’s been a great summer. In case you’ve
forgotten already, it included the thrills of a high-
scoring World Cup that saw the hosts humiliated
and the Germans – inevitably – winning in style.
Then there was the spectacle of the
Commonwealth Games, and the Scots showing
they don’t expect to live in the shadow of London,
either when it comes to organising an international
multi-sports extravaganza, or - with an eye on the
forthcoming referendum - in the small matter of
running a country.
So, it might seem that I am stretching my
enthusiasm to suggest you should get excited about
a family fun day in a local park.
But this year’s Lark in the Park – run by
Uttoxeter Lions - does have a lot to commend it –
not least a headline act fresh from the Glastonbury
Festival.
Free family fun day on Saturday August
23rd
Now obviously, I’m not talking about an act
that headlined Glasto. No Arcade Fire or Metallica
for us. No, sir, that would be unlikely, and anyway,
both of those turns are acquired tastes (personally
I love one, hate the other, and won’t say which for
fear of alienating you, dear reader).
I’d love to tell you our star attraction was Dolly
Parton, but that would be improbable for a couple
of reasons (a cheap joke, I know, but no worse than
her own) mainly to do with the size of the crowds
and the budgets involved.
Nonetheless, Rudi and Jake Wallenda, from the
famous European circus family, have performed at
Glasto several times – though clearly not on the
pyramid stage - and will be bringing their act to
the arena in Bramshall Road Recreation Ground
on the afternoon of August 23rd, the Saturday of
the Bank Holiday weekend.
Their show includes a tiger on a bicycle and a
Bullnose Morris car. The car’s authentic: the tiger
isn’t, but both are surely in the quirky mould we’ve
come to expect at the Lark in the Park, where
previous acts have included a bloke who set
himself on fire and dived off a hundred foot high
platform and a chap who balanced a car on his
head.
In stark contrast there will also be an exhibition
by Ben Long and his falconry school, with
demonstrations of the historic craft of flying birds
of prey in the arena and a static display of these
magnificent raptors, where you can see them up
close all afternoon.
Something for all the family - almost
It’s an eclectic mix – something for all the
family except possibly that awkward maiden aunt
with a thing about owls. And it’s mostly free.
The arena will also be home to performances
by Uttoxeter’s excellent town band, and dancing
and children’s games – with prizes – compered by
internationally-renowned DJ Matt Goodwin,
The free attractions around the park include
super-jumper trampolines – they’re the ones with
bungee harnesses, a children’s roundabout, a
climbing wall, donkey rides, kiddies’ trampolines,
jousting, a ferris wheel and balloon modelling.
Other childen’s favourites with a small charge
include bouncy castles, an inflatable dome, a giant
slide, and face-painting.
There’ll be an ice cream van and hot food, with
numerous side-shows and stalls from local
organisations.
Then there’s the duck race on the brook at the
bottom of the field at the end of the afternoon.
Tickets for ducks are being sold by Lions Club
members in the town centre in the run-up to the
event and on the day. You simply buy a ticket for
a duck and hope that yours comes in first across
the finishing line.
They are not real ducks and they’re all exactly
the same, so there’s no skill involved. In fact the
only difference between the duck race and a raffle
is that in a raffle nobody gets wet. By taking the
option where people do get wet – even if it’s only
the people fishing the plastic ducks out of the
brook, I like to think we’re maintaining a well-
established tradition at Lark in the Park of taking
the wacky option rather than the safe and obvious
one.
All we need now is the right weather, and we
all know how quirky that can be.
Fashion Voice
by Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter
With the British weather as
unpredictable as ever,Summer coats
have been our fashion saviour. From
the Trench to Macs and Parkas to
Cocoon coats. With all the heavy
showers we have had, it is always an
advantage to buy either shower, or
waterproofed fabrics. Another option
of course is to simply carry a small
umbrella. The Trench has and is always
an absolute classic. This style never
dates and you will be wearing this one
for many years to come. I invested in a
Burberry trench from a Dress Agency
about six years ago and of course the
scarf as an accessory.
Seasalt do a super quirky,
waterproof, windproof, breathable,
organic fabric range of jackets and
coats. We do have a local stockist in
town - Annetta Ross on the High street.
Annetta also stocks the Nautical styles
in this range,which includes, tops,
jackets, and scarves. She has two floors
of jeans, trousers, tops, footwear and
outfits for every occasion, with
experienced and h staff.
I personally feel that you need to
have confidence in your staff, in being
able to assist and advise customers, even though
they might not always agree with your comments.
If I think a particular top, trousers, dress or suit
does not compliment a customer, I
explain why. There can be several
reasons such as colour, style, length
and shape. Customer satisfaction is
just as important as sales.
When you return home from
shopping with us you will certainly
be happy with the price, the
product, quality and the friendly
staff.
As mentioned previously we
have beautiful maxi,mid-length and
short dresses for all ages. The maxi
dress in the photograph would
normally retail at £50 but in
Essentials it retails at £19.99. The
ruching around the tummy helps to
hide what can be a problem area,
and a shrug can be worn to cover
upper arms.
The jumpsuit has ‘jumped’ on to
the high street this summer in
various patterns and colours. One
of which is the tie-dye effect which
we have on the shop floor at
Essentials. I have encouraged
customers of all ages to try them
with amazing results as they are
really comfortable to wear. It takes
courage to step out of our ‘comfort zone’ and we
all have one -including myself. Jump out of that
zone and try a jumpsuit as they are perfect for
holidays. You can dress them up with a piece of
jewellery or a silk scarf.

  • 3. 3Let The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice take your business to 13,000 local homes. To advertise, call 01538 751629 or 07733 466 970. Publisher and Editor: Nigel Titterton The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice is published by Community Voice Publications Ltd Telephone 01538 751629 e-mail uttoxetervoice@hotmail.co.uk The views expressed in this publication are those of our contributors and are not necessarily those of the publishers, nor indeed their responsibility. All Rights Reserved. Copyright Community Voice Publications Ltd. Designed and Produced by noel@sergeantdesign.com Avid readers of my articles will know that I hold our local community and its residents in the highest regard! I am very proud of where I live and the people who I live with. My aim, as it is with The Voice, is to try to make our community an even better place to bring up our children, grandchildren etc whilst also looking after our elderly and those who are not as fortunate as others. This is the bedrock of society, for everyone to look to the future whilst taking care of the present. Readers will also know from my articles that I have precious little time for politicians, councillors etc – but I acknowledge there are many excellent such people who share my beliefs for local people. However, I feel I need to have a say on something which could prove to be a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity for the youngsters of Uttoxeter and surrounding villages. My beloved Oldfields Sports & Social Club nurtures a massive number of children and adults in tandem with Uttoxeter Town Football Club and Uttoxeter Rugby Club. It really is a sight to behold on a Saturday or Sunday morning to see hundreds of youngsters being taught by dedicated volunteers of the respective clubs, getting the kids away from computers and carrying out healthy and active sport. I say The Government should pay such clubs to do so! Due to their success, Oldfields Sports Club want to expand sports facilities at Staffordshire County Council-owned land at Mount Pleasant, Stone Road – just over the road from the club’s 2 sports pitches. You would have thought the County Council would applaud this initiative and allow their land to be used for the healthy future of our sporting youngsters! I believe extensive negotiations have taken place but now the land could be earmarked for sale for extra care housing for the elderly. This is despite this land being struck off the Local Plan for housing by the ESBC after protests from local residents! I know the County Council must ensure provision for the elderly in Uttoxeter and I appreciate they are between a rock and a hard place, but surely there is land elsewhere... I appeal to our Rocester-based Leader of Staffordshire County Council Philip Atkins, who personally I have a lot time for, to grasp the nettle and allow Oldfields Sports & Social Club to expand onto the land at Mount Pleasant and provide our youngsters with a wonderful opportunity to enjoy sport throughout future generations. This is the only piece of land adjacent to Oldfields Sports Club which could be used! I have no political bias, I just think we can’t let this moment go – because once this land has been built on, our sports facilities for our young footballers and rugby players cannot expand. Let’s just take a thought on what has happened over the last few weeks for a Uttoxeter teenager who has made everyone in the town so proud – young Adam Peaty was a TV star after scooping 2 Golds and a Silver Medal at The Commonwealth Games! Sport has got to be the future for our youngsters – please Mr Atkins, make it happen for our future generations and allow the dedicated people of Oldfields Sports Club to expand onto Mount Pleasant – they and our youngsters will be so grateful to you and the County Council I can assure you... I hope you enjoy reading The Voice magazine. I’ll speak to you next time... A record field of 2,700 people crawled, climbed and splashed their way around a gunge-filled course to take on the challenge of the 3rd Annual JCB Mud Run. Participation was nearly treble that of last year’s event with competitors coming from all over the UK and beyond for the fun endurance event. Ingeniously designed obstacles such as a 100ft rope climb and underground tunnels were combined with natural terrain – including woods, rivers, inclines and peat – for the five-mile course on land owned by JCB in Staffordshire. But no amount of mud could take the shine off the £50,127 raised by participants for the NSPCC in Staffordshire. JCB has recently completed a £2 million fundraising campaign which has helped to pay for the charity’s new service centre, Carole House, in Newcastle-under- Lyme. A cheque was presented to NSPCC representatives by George Bamford, son of JCB chairman Lord Bamford. George who took part in the JCB Mud Run for the second year running, said: “What a fantastic event and what great camaraderie – the best I’ve ever seen. Everyone was helping one another to get over the obstacles and to get through the mud and water. “I can’t believe so many people have turned out. – 2,700 is an incredible number. And I’m so proud of what we have been able to raise for the NSPCC. It’s a staggering total. Well done to everyone.” NSPCC Stoke-on-Trent Service Centre Manager Pete Turgoose said: “Thanks so much to everyone at JCB for making this event possible. This is the third Mud Run and JCB has evidently tapped into something that people love! “Getting filthy, having fun and doing some phenomenal fundraising is a perfect combination and we know that every pound raised will go towards helping us run vital support services for local children.” First team across the line included Mark Dalkins, Cheadle, who notched up an incredible double. Two weeks earlier he was in Savannah, Georgia where he also won the JCB North America Mud Run. The veteran roadrunner said: “It was a tough course and a bit longer than last year’s and there were more obstacles. It had been raining for 12 hours solid in the build-up so there was a lot more water around, which made going underfoot a real challenge. “Having said that it was great fun to take part in and the fact I was in America two weeks earlier to do the JCB event there made it even more special.” London 2012 Olympic Torchbearer Dave Allen – who works for JCB as a sales manager – was crowned the JCB Mud Run winner in the individual race with a time of 38 minutes and 53 seconds. The 48-year-old of Tean, said: “I enjoy the off- road running and this is a lot of fun. There were a lot of challenges set by the course organisers so well done to them. They got the right balance between challenging and fun.” Among those taking part were Daniel Skalicky, 23, – a professional ice hockey player from Liberec, in the Czech Republic, who flew to the UK to join his brother Michal for the Mud Run. Michal, 25, who lives in Uttoxeter and is a JCB finance graduate, said: “We had a great deal of fun taking part. I told my brother about the JCB Mud Run and he was keen to come over for it. He is starting pre-season training back home in a couple of weeks so this was a great warm up. I was not sure what to expect but this was really excellent and we’ll definitely be back.” Other teams competing included representatives from JCB France, who flew in from Paris for the event, and a Dutch team from Van Leeuwan Pipe and Tube Group. Prudence Bradley, 21, of Alton, who works at Uttoxeter Racecourse, took part for the third time. She said: “It’s great fun and, what can I say, I just like getting wet and muddy so I keep coming back. I’m very proud of how much has been raised for the NSPCC too.” Another competitor was Andy Parry, 36, of Derby, who reviews mud run events around the country for the Mudstacle website. He said: “It was really good fun, a good range of obstacles, good terrain, excellent facilities and everything was well signposted. It was nice to see so many people enjoying themselves at such a well organised event.” Meanwhile, Mark Hogg, 40 from Willenhall, West Midlands, took on the JCB Mud Run dressed as Batman. He said: “I’ve been here every year so far but this is the first time in fancy dress. No one minds that you are making a fool of yourself –we know it’s for a great course and everyone’s in the same boat.” Record JCB Mud Run field raises more than £50,000 for NSPCC Left to right: George Bamford presents a cheque for £50,127 to NSPCC Service Centre Manager Peter Turgoose and Kirsty White, of the NSPCC.

Painsley Announced as Maths Hub Painsley Catholic College Specialist Science, Maths and Computing College Prospective Parents’ Evening Wednesday 17th September at 7.00 pm in the College Hall You are warmly invited to visit Staffordshire’s top performing state school, meet the Principal, staff, students and to take a tour of the College to see our excellent facilities in action. Painsley offers: • A Christian community with a caring, secure and disciplined environment • A wide range of extra-curricular activities • High standards in Sport, Music and Drama • An outstanding Sixth Form • In 2014, Painsley was awarded Teaching School status which is a prestigious recognition of the outstanding education provided at the College. • Painsley is one of only 32 schools in the whole of the country to be awarded ‘Maths Hub’ status. This is in recognition of our excellence in Maths. For further information, please contact the College office@painsley.staffs.sch.uk www.painsley.co.uk Tel: (01538) 483944 Station Road, Cheadle, Stoke on Trent, Staffordshire ST10 1LH P ainsley Catholic College in Cheadle, Staffordshire is proud to announce that it is one of the 32 new maths hubs announced by Education Minister Elizabeth Truss. Painsley will be working with partners across Staffordshire and the Midlands to boost the teaching and learning of maths in England and will help to shape the future of maths education both locally and nationally. Exchanges will also be made with Shanghai to learn from their education system. A spokesperson for the government said: ‘Education Minister Elizabeth Truss announced £11 million for the new maths hubs to drive up the quality of maths teachers - as international test results showed England’s performance had stagnated. The money will allow the development of a national network of 32 ‘mathematics education strategic hubs’ (MESH). Each will be led by a teaching school and will provide support to all schools in the area, across all areas of maths education, including: • recruitment of maths specialists into teaching • initial training of maths teachers and converting existing teachers into maths • co-ordinating and delivering a wide range of maths continuing professional development (CPD) and school-to-school support • ensuring maths leadership is developed, eg running a programme for aspiring heads of maths departments • helping maths enrichment programmes to reach a large number of pupils from primary school onwards Other teaching school alliances and school and college groupings in the area will be strategic partners in the hub. The expectation will be that all phases of education from early years to post-16 will be represented. The Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) tests this year focused on maths, with the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) comparing countries’ average performance in the subject with England’s. The PISA tests show that England’s performance has stagnated in maths and we are now ranked 25th. England’s score in maths is now 495, compared to 493 in 2009 and 495 in 2006. The OECD said England’s performance had plateaued in the last 6 years with 1 in 12 of England’s 15-year-olds failing even to reach the most basic level. The table is dominated by jurisdictions from south-east Asia - the top 7 in maths are Shanghai- China, Singapore, Hong Kong-China, Chinese Taipei, Korea, Macao-China and Japan. Vietnam is now ranked ahead of England, at 17th. The performance of all these jurisdictions is rated by the OECD as ‘significantly’ better than England’s.’ Mr Stephen Bell, Principal at Painsley Catholic College commented “I am delighted that Painsley has been given this wonderful opportunity. To lead development in the pursuit of excellence in the teaching and learning of mathematics is a true privilege and we very much look forward to working with partner schools across the Midlands and the Country to enhance the numerical skills of the young people in our care. We plan to be part of a revolution in teaching and learning which will help to put England’s mathematical attainment at the top of the world tables.”

Lank’s Lore By Steve ‘Lank’Lavin Golden Memories from one of Uttoxeter’s Favourite Characters T hings have certainly changed in the town over the years, and one particular aspect that comes to my mind is the changes made to one of the towns local newspapers, The Uttoxeter Advertiser or ‘Stunner’ as it is known. This has changed dramatically since its establishment in the area in 1882. Even up to being taken over in 1994 by the Burton Mail Group it had remained pretty much the same in its format since the early days of its conception. The Burton Mail Group started producing the paper in tabloid format and printed it in full colour and owing to their more modern techniques allowed the news content to be more up to date. Prior to 1994 the paper was produced by Babb Brothers at their offices which were accessed up an alleyway at the side of the now HSBC Bank in Market Place, Uttoxeter. In those days the paper was a ‘Broadsheet’ in size and printed by the old Letterpress printing process. Even at that time letterpress production was an old technology for producing newspapers and was probably one of the last in the country to be done this way. This involved the bulk of the text being typeset mechanically by a Linotype Line Casting Machine. The ‘Stunner’had two of these machines which were ancient but still in working condition. They were built in the early 1900’s by a great old British manufacture the Linotype Machinery Company in Altrincham, Cheshire. These machines were certainly a joy to watch in operation. They clattered and banged and churned out lines of type in slug format which were then assembled by hand into a frame (a ‘Chase’ in printing terms) by hand by a ‘Compositor’ along with various single letters of type for the headings and metal plates mounted on wood which were used for the various illustrations and photographs. After the composition of the pages the ‘chase’ weighing several hundred pounds was lifted on to the press by two strong staff members who secured it on the printing press to commence the print run. The printing press that was used was also a joy to watch. In the early days an American Miele flatbed cylinder printing press was used, this again was ancient and the paper in broadsheet form had to be hand fed one sheet at a time into the feed and was then automatically delivered into a pile at the other end. Production was started on a Wednesday and completed on the following Monday afternoon when a team of local pensioners were brought in to hand fold the 4pp outer and insert the two or four page (on a good week) supplement into it to complete the issue ready for collection by a battery of local newsagents eagerly awaiting copies to get on to their shelves for sale to the expectant public. The proprietor was a friend of mine Mr. Warwick Babb who took over from his father Horace who had purchased the paper in 1906. Warwick, who was responsible for the running of the printing machine replaced the original Miele press in the mid 70’s with a more up to date press, an Italian Nebiolo Flat Bed Cylinder press which would feed the sheets of paper into the machine automatically thus saving production time. Although this press was certainly an improvement on the previous one it was still ancient compared with the machinery that was available at the time, but as Warwick said it was fit for the purpose. Although the paper would win no prizes for it’s print quality, some of the type used was passed its sell by date and no colour whatsover in those days was used, it’s content was something else. People used to scramble to buy it to find out who had been ‘Done’ in the special feature on the local Magistrates Court that week, farmers would follow the livestock prices in the weekly cattle market report and the paper contained numerous editorial and typographical mistakes which also gave it its appeal. The paper still survives today, still as popular as it was then but probably lacking the fun element that it had in the old days. After 18 months of planning, our wedding day was finally here. Having spent the Friday night back at my parents’ home I awoke to a calm and very laid back atmosphere. The three hairdressers from “Second Glance” in Uttoxeter arrived promptly at 8 am. Diane, Kerry and Jen soon worked their magic and produced 6 very glamourus up do’s... I had chosen to wear my mum’s tiara that she wore on her wedding day 27 years ago, something I know she was thrilled about. I opened my wedding present from Ryan, which the best man had delivered the night before... a most gorgeous pair of Pandora earrings, how ever did he chose the right ones !!!!! We had booked two photographers from “Imagination Photography” at Stafford. Brian arrived promptly at home at about 11 am and soon started to take photos of my beautiful “Justin Alexander” designer wedding dress and of course my equally fabulous “Jimmy Choo” shoes. My mum and Emma helped me into my gown, which I chose from ‘Bridal Couture’ in Cheadle with the help of the lovely and very knowledgable Josephine, it was a beautiful ivory colour with a delicate lace body, a full chiffon and tulle skirt and the cathedral length train completed my “Princess” dress. Feeling like the princess I always imagined, I walked down the stairs to finally show my dad my dress, as he had not seen it at all, his face said it all, and although he wouldn’t admit it I’m sure he had tears in his eyes when he said” Wow, Katie you look stunning, simply stunning. My mum looked amazing in her gorgeous hat which she had, had made to her own design, from “Fascinate” of Uttoxeter, and as always my dad looked very smart in his navy morning suit. By now it was quarter to twelve and three most fantastic wedding cars were all waiting outside, looking very posh trimmed with white ribbon. Two of the cars were from Nostalgic Wedding Cars and one from Stoddards of Cheadle. Mum and Emma put my full length cathedral veil in place, I picked up my bouquet which my dad had carefully made for me to my design from antique brooches, it also contained my grandmas locket and my great grandmas marquisite watch face which he de set to the time of the wedding and I was ready to go !!!!!! As I left my childhood home for the very last time as Miss Fuller I could hear the church bells ringing, which I had heard on numerous occasions but today they were ringing for MY wedding !! Waiting for me were my two flower girls, along with my godson who was also my page boy. Having been so very calm all morning this is where my nerves and tears started, so after a few photos, I took my dads arm and walked into church to “Canon in D major” by Pachelbel. As we took a slow walk down the aisle, Ryan turned to look at me and at that moment I just remember feeling incredibly happy. During the service, which was conducted by the Rev. Irene Smith, we sang 3 hymns, Ryan’s uncle read a biblical reading and my grandad read a poem. Both Ryan and I had learnt our vows by heart and although I had few more tears when saying mine, in no time at all we were pronounced husband and wife and after a few more photos we left church to Mendelssohn s “Wedding March”. I was by now carrying a very special posy for a very special lady, my Grandma Dottie who had passed away nearly two years ago, this was placed on her grave in the churchyard with the message on it reading, “ We knew you would be here today if heaven wasn’t so far away” My husband and I left the church in the vintage car which I had arrived in and together we took the short drive to “Park Hall Farm”, Church Leigh. “Elegant Affair” in Burslem had dressed the tables and chairs, and what a fantastic job they had done. Ryan and I also saw our wedding cake for the first time, and wow we were not disappointed. It was a massive four tiered, double layered creation, draped with pearls and finished with flowers and ribbon, Stephanie Crewe of “Cheeky Cupcakes” had excelled herself. Our favours were pots of home made “matrimony” jam, which were home made by me and my grandfather and for the children, cake pops !!!!!! Ryan and I had decided to have the speeches before the meal, so our toastmaster, Wayne Shelton, The Staffordshire Toast Master, called for silence and introduced the top table guests, he announced the new Mr and Mrs Saunders to a huge applause, I felt 10 foot tall with my new husband tightly holding my hand. The speeches were fabulous. First was my dad, who I think made everyone laugh and cry, he spoke about my childhood and he did the top hat joke to perfection. Ryan spoke from the heart and made numerous thank yous Finally the best man, Alex spoke, this too was a very entertaining speech. After we had all said grace, we dined on a three course wedding breakfast which was provided by the in house caterers, Dave and his team. There was now time for a few more photographs, some formal ones and some informal ones, the moat, bridge and gardens all made for a stunning backdrop.

What seemed all too soon it was time for us to start welcoming our evening guests, our entertainment was provided by “The Live Wires”. What our friends and family didn’t know was that Ryan and I I had secretly been having private dance lessons, so we took to the floor and performed a perfectly choreographed routine as our first dance to “A Thousand Years” by Christina Perri, off course we had ent practiced this with me in a wedding dress, but Ryan did the big lifts with precision... This was then followed by another surprise for our guests, the four bridesmaids, two of the ushers and the best man dancing a totally brilliant routine which in one part saw my brother, Ashley take centre stage, just as he likes !!!! As a surprise for us my mum had booked a photo booth complete with a F1 background, this was just fabulous, and along with the chocolate fountain we had hired from “Marsh Delights”. Before we knew it, it was time for us to leave, we said our goodbyes to our family and friends. We can only describe our wedding day as “perfect in every way” and it was wonderful to share it with all of our family and our very good friends, all of which helped to make it so very special. Both Ryan and I have many, many fabulous memories of our perfect day and we will never ever forget them. We had to wait seven weeks for our honeymoon, as both being avid formula 1 fans we had decided to go to Monaco for the Grand Prix, which was beyond all of our expectations. Ryan and Katie.....x

Everyone is welcome, from long serving and experienced members, to those just starting out or having an interest in producing better images and using or displaying them. The aim is not to let photos clutter up camera phones, hard disk drives and iPads, but to be seen. This season 2014/15 sees presentations and practical sessions on getting the most out of your equipment. Our first competition is “Landscapes” - from the scenic rural and bucolic, to the urban and industrial… any aspect of the great outdoors. Techniques such as close-up or macro photography will be explained, as will all sorts of ways to achieve stunning images. Those interested in image software will enjoy the Photoshop nights and will get a chance to see how to improve their images. Members have ready access to advice on how to print, mount and frame photographs, as well as equipment loans and the opportunity to convert memorable old photos, negatives or slides into archived digital files for your family to treasure or share online. Practical topics include studio portraiture and lighting, from Cheadle professional photographer, Chris Lees: lectures from renowned photographers Richard Weston and Tony Pioli as well as stunning visual treats from our own Honorary President, Dave Fernihough. A few of our members are planning to attend a national competition on city photography this year. So, if you fancy having a go as paparazzi, possibly being chased down the back alleys of some city, this might be for you - or you might choose the more sedate cultural aspects, and find yourself in an exotic China Town. New to the forthcoming season we are opening meetings 30 minutes early (at 7PM) to allow members with questions to get advice before the programmed meeting starts. A club outing has been arranged. The “Mystery Tour” will allow members to practise their skills taking Macro, Landscapes, Industrial and Architectural Photographs and perhaps to learn by seeing the pictures seen by others in the same location. Everyone is welcome to our first meeting and exhibition at the community room, come along to a social evening. See some of members past work, show us what you photographed during this summer’s break. This is a great way to learn about your equipment whether iPad, camera phone, film or digital camera. See and view from the most modern to vintage classics. Five-year-old Kyreigh O’Regan suffers from cerebral palsy – the result of having a stroke during birth - which leaves him in constant pain, suffering from muscle cramps and spasms and unable to walk unaided. He also needs a wheelchair to travel any distances, performs daily physiotherapy exercises to strengthen his muscles, wears splints day and night as well as falling over multiple times daily and sometimes badly injuring himself. Seven weeks ago his mum, Sasha O’Regan, launched a campaign to send him to St Louis Children’s Hospital in America for a Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) operation which will end the pain instantly. Due to NHS cuts it is unlikely Kyreigh will be able to have the operation in the UK but without the surgery his condition could deteriorate and he could spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair and in constant pain. People had already dug deep to raise around £5,000 and a number of charity events have been organised in the five-year-old’s home town of Uttoxeter. However, earlier this week the total raised so far was doubled to £10,400 when a mystery £5,000 donation was added to the campaign’s Just Giving website. Sasha - who also had a seven-year-old daughter called Xanthie – said: “Kyreigh is in constant pain is often unable to sleep through at night – it breaks my heart to see him like this and I know it is so distressing for Xanthie too. As his mum I know I am never going to stop raising the money needed for the SDR surgery which will end the pain he suffers as well as enabling him to walk and run independently. “But the £65,000 cost of the operation and travel to St Louis is such a massive sum it is difficult some times to know where it will all come from however I will continue with the help of my community to organise events and keep pushing until we reach our goal - this £5,000 donation has been a ray of hope in very testing times. It is such a brilliant gesture and just the boost we need to keep the fundraising momentum up. I can’t thank every enough for what they have done so far.” A quote from the anonymous couple, “Having heard of little Kyreigh’s desperate need of an operation to relieve his constant pain and give him the opportunity to walk unaided and then finding that his young mother, Sasha, is not only bringing up two young children but also desperately trying to raise the funds for the operation we were compelled to help, who could not be. We hope by us making a significant donation it may encourage others to donate directly through the just giving web site, whether large or small, business or individual, Children or Adults, every donation will make an enormous difference to this lovely little boys young life. Please help Kyreigh if you feel you can.” Sasha, 24, and her partner Pete Turp, 32, have also organised several key fundraising events in and around Uttoxeter. They include charity football and cricket matches, a sports memorabilia auction and a black tie charity ball at Uttoxeter Racecourse. Burton and Uttoxeter MP Andrew Griffiths and the Uttoxeter Lions and Uttoxeter Rotary Club have also thrown their full weight behind the campaign. Sasha said: “The way the town is coming together is amazing - everyone I have spoken to has been really generous and even if they cannot really afford it they have donated money - it’s really touching.” “I just hope we can raise the money and Kyreigh can have the operation as soon as possible. The sooner we raise the money the sooner my son can be free from pain, walking independently and wearing the football boots he has always wanted and go out to play in them.” To make a donation visit www.justgiving.com/kyreighskause/ People can also donate by texting KYRE80 followed by the sum to 70070. • 22. 22 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Thank you for your support. Nathan is a local estate agent, with over16 years of experience in the residential sales and lettings market. W hen selling your property, one of the most important elements to achieving a sale, and for optimum value is timing. Spring (Feb/Mar) and Autumn (Sep) are the key times to sell your property when traditionally demand outstrips supply and therefore prices are usually at their most buoyant. Therefore, now is the time to start thinking about bringing your property to the market, or changing estate agents in time for the second peak of the year in September. Nathan Anderson-Dixon’s Selling Tips Know your buyer To achieve the best possible return from advertising it’s important to build a profile of your target audience, who might buy your property and what appeals to them. Then try to tailor your space to appeal to the main group without alienating other groups that might also be interested. For example; if you feel a professional couple would be ideal, then turn the 2nd bed/office back into a bedroom and make a space for a workstation elsewhere in the house. The house would still appeal to a couple with a small child. Spring (Feb/Mar) and Autumn (Sep) are the key times to sell your property when traditionally demand outstrips supply and therefore prices are usually at their most buoyant. De-Clutter and De-Personalise Potential buyers need to imagine themselves living in your house, so get rid of ornaments and photos - especially posters in kids’ bedrooms. Put things you don’t really use on a daily basis in the attic or storage. Large pieces of furniture should also go into storage; this will make rooms feel much bigger. Focus on the hallway - clear away coats/clutter; the bathroom - hide all your products; and the kitchen - clear the bench surfaces of appliances, jars, tins, etc, and replace any ragged tea towels or smelly bins. Valuation & Selling Prices Valuing property is not an exact science and many factors are taken into consideration. Agents don’t charge for valuations, so try to get 3 as a minimum. By using a tool such as a Property Report you will have a headstart on establishing the right price for your property. Take your report along to your chosen Estate Agent, and you should then be able to agree a realistic price for your property based on your report together with the agent’s comparables. Get the Word Out Always have a board up, and tell your neighbours - word of mouth is a powerful tool. You never know who might live just round the corner, waiting for your house to come to the market. Also, choose an estate agent that uses all the main portals, including social media like facebook and twitter. That way you can share your property with friends to create further interest. Preparing for Viewings Everyone knows that first impressions count, and you’ll want the house to appeal to as many people as possible; the more people there are who like the property, the higher the selling price should be. So sweep up, and make sure the front yard and hall to your house are tidy and inviting. Leave the pets with a neighbour, and thoroughly clean up any cat hair in particular, as many people are allergic to animal hair. Turn the lights and heating on; air out the house; and don’t smoke or cook a curry before viewings. If you’ve got parking, leave the space free for the buyer - this will add to the whole experience. Showing a Property You’ll probably be paying an agent to do this; they know their job, so I always recommend that property owners go out during viewings. If you must show your property yourself, then decide beforehand what order you will show the rooms, and guide viewers around the property once, showing the best rooms first or last. Don’t overload them with detail, such as the size of your boiler or the trouble with the neighbour’s cat. Be business-like during the first viewing; if someone is interested, you can always get to know them a little more on the second viewing. Never point out problems or issues, but do feel free to highlight the odd positive point, like a south-facing garden, or very convenient parking. Finally, invite viewers to take another tour round the property on their own... but don’t go off and make a phone call - be somewhere nearby, on hand to answer queries. Accepting Offers Your agent will be the middleman and should present every offer that is made. Insist that the agent has all the background information to hand on the buyer’s position, and the ability to move quickly and ask that offers be made in writing. Market conditions, competition and how much the buyer loves the property will determine what the buyer is prepared to offer. Similarly, the price you will be prepared to accept will depend on market conditions; how quickly you need to sell; and the size of your moving budget. Compromise on both sides is often the key to securing a deal. Also, know whether you want to keep all your furniture, curtains and white goods, as many of these items may not suit your next home, and can be used as effective bargaining tools to get the price you want. If you have been on the market for a number of weeks, and are now thinking of changing estate agents, always check you contract first to make sure you are out of the initial sole agency period. If you are unsure take professional advice. Abode, Anderson-Dixon are currently seeking instructions in readiness for September, if you have a property to sell and would like advice on how to achieve the best price in the shortest time, please contact Nathan personally on 01889 567777. • 30. The seventh RBA Wealth Management Charity Golf Day took place on Thursday 10th July 2014, at Morley Hayes Golf Club in Derbyshire. RBA Wealth Management, a team of financial planning and wealth management specialists, based in Uttoxeter, Staffordshire, has recorded its most successful golf day event to date where they exceeded last year’s target of £6,500 with a new record of £8,000. All efforts and funds raised have been in honor of their chosen charity for 2014, ‘Little Hearts Matter’. Little Hearts Matter (LHM) is a Birmingham based charity, which support families whose child has been diagnosed with half a working heart and is a charity that has a close personal link to RBA. Angela Fountain, Director of RBA Wealth Management, has personally been supported by this charity when her own daughter, Ruby, was diagnosed with Tricuspid Atresia at 18 weeks into Angela’s pregnancy. Little Hearts Matter are celebrating their 20th anniversary this year. They solely rely on donations from the public and businesses, offers support and information, and raises awareness of those affected when a child is diagnosed with a life threatening heart defect. Over the last year they have been able to support over 3,500 people who live with these heart problems every day and receive up to six new referrals each week. For more information about the charity please visit www.lhm.org.uk. The splendid British summer weather, beautiful Derbyshire views and the challenging 18-hole course at Morley Hayes golf club provided an excellent experience for RBA’s team and 40 guests who participated in the charity event this year. The day went exceptionally well and RBA would like to thank all of those who took part on the day and their clients, who have been extremely generous with their donations. A selection of first class raffle prizes were donated by the following local businesses: PJD Engineering, Hungry Horse, FBT, Edmonstons Butchers, Opulence, Denstone Hall Farm Shop, The Boars Head, Sarah Heathcote Beauty, Emma Bridgewater, Alton Towers, The fashion Parade, Asda, L’Oreal, Morley Hayes Golf Club, Uttoxeter Valeting Centre, The Marjorie Centre, Emilie Duclos, Essentials Clothing. Golf tee’s were sponsored by the following companies: ACE, Anthon Marlow, Blythe Insurance Brokers, Bowcock & Pursail, Cowlishaw & Mountford, D & G Buses, Dalton Garages, M J Lavin & Sons, MHA Accountants, P & Y Commercial Consultants Ltd, RBA Wealth Management, W Boulton Construction. RBA Wealth Management provided prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd placed golfers, nearest the pin and longest drive winners. Results are as follows: 1st Place – Carl Powell & Mark Mitton 2nd Place – Steve Shaw & Jim Maxwell 3rd Place – Andrew Hackney & Paul Johnson Longest Drive – Shaun Campbell Nearest the Pin – Gordon Watt Special thanks to Carl Powell, Director of Briton Fabricators and winner of the competition, who donated £1,000. Angela Fountain, Director of RBA said, “This year’s golf day has proved a real success; it’s been our biggest golf day to date raising more than ever before. We were blessed with great weather and everyone seemed to enjoy their day. Little Hearts Matter has been invaluable as a contact for advice and support right from the day we were given the unexpected news that our unborn child was going to be born with only half a working heart. LHM helped us understand what this diagnosis meant for our daughter and what sort of life she would lead. We are very lucky that Ruby has bounced back from each stage of her operations, is a bundle of energy and looking forward to starting school in September this year. LHM still continue to be to be a source of ongoing support and the work they do is absolutely fantastic. Over our seven golf days so far we have raised just shy of £30,000 for some important charities; in addition we have given grants to smaller charities via the St. James’s Place Foundation. We are keen to keep progressing our golf day and our overall involvement in local charity work. We would like to thank everybody who has been involved in this year’s event for their support and generosity in raising monies for this great cause.” If you would like to take part in next year’s golf event and try to break yet another record or you would like to make a donation then please contact Serena White on 01889 568444 or email serena.white@sjpp.co.uk. • 32. Long-serving pair given fitting send-off after 75 years combined service A special lunch was held to mark the retirement of two JCB stalwarts with over 75 years of combined experience. The careers of Dave Johnson and George Line were celebrated at the company’s World HQ in Rocester ahead of their retirement recently. The pair, who joined JCB just six months apart, held a variety of positions with the company before their final roles saw them work together in logistics. George, 62, of Uttoxeter is looking forward to walking in the Peak District with his wife Jill when he calls time on almost 38 years - having joined JCB in September 1976. He said: “It was all done from one shop when I started, and now JCB is massive, but the company’s values have stayed the same.” Dave, 63 – or ‘Jolly’ as he is known – joined in March 1977 and is now looking forward to a two-month visit to Adelaide in Australia with wife Joyce later this year to catch up with their daughter Emma. Reflecting on his career Dave, who grew up in Foxt but now lives in Uttoxeter, said: “I’ve had a great career thanks to JCB and its permanently friendly atmosphere – it’s been a great place to work. Admittedly JCB has changed a lot over the years, but only for the better.” Andrew Brindley, Logistics Group Leader at JCB, said: “Both George and Jolly are hard-working and it has been a pleasure working with them They will be sadly missed. We wish them all the best in retirement.” 32 If you are responding to an advertisement in The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice, please let the advertiser know. Thank you for your support. S ixteen local women and men from Uttoxeter BFITT signed up for The JCB Mudrun in July. The main aim was to support husband and wife team James & Louise Brown from Uttoxeter who sadly lost their first born son Lewis Brown to Sudden infant death syndrome at just eight weeks old, leaving them both totally devastated. James and Louise should have been celebrating Lewis’s 5th birthday the day after the Mudrun which ironically was held on the 5th of the month. Instead they were out running the 5 mile run through the muddy obstacles to raise money and awareness for a charity which has helped them to come to terms with the loss of there beautiful baby boy, and has support them both going forward and having more children. Louise said “the charity has given us so much support since having two more sons Ethan and Spencer”.“We just wanted to give something back to the Lullaby Trust, so that they can continue to support families unfortunate enough to find themselves in a similar position as ourselves. We wanted to do our little man proud by completing the run”. BFITT members wanted to stand together to support one of their own members going through such a tough time, and we couldn’t think of a better way than to do the Mudrun with them. We each took sponsor forms into our places of work and found even more support with “Bfitt, JCB and Midway Academy” all helping us out with sponsorship. The Old Star held a charity bucket night for Louise & James raising £233.70 and Midway Academy donated this year’s money from the summer fair £550 Louise said “We can’t believe the local support that we have received, we really want to thank the people of Uttoxeter for their generosity, we really feel that we have done our little man proud”. Talking Pets by Shoshannah McCarthy BVetMed (Hons) MRCVS Shosh qualified from the Royal Veterinary College in London, and has been working as a small animal vet at Blue House Veterinary Centre in Biddulph since 2009. She recently acquired a rescue cat named Bagpuss. I know hairballs/furballs have traditionally been considered a normal part of cat physiology. However, nowadays that idea is going out the window. As far as many experts are concerned, frequent hairball vomiting is a sign of a digestive tract problem until proven otherwise. Is it hairballs? Sometimes there is a little confusion over this. If your cat brings up a clump of hair, that’s a hairball. If they bring up food or bile with a few strands of hair, or no strands at all, that’s not a hairball - it’s just vomiting. They are unlikely to be trying to bring up a hairball. If they are coughing or wheezing, I’d be more concerned about a problem such as feline asthma and they need to see a vet; they are very unlikely to be trying to bring up a hairball. Cats do not ‘cough up’ hairballs from their lungs; they vomit them up from their stomachs, and usually the hair only comes up by coincidence. The cause of the underlying vomiting needs to be addressed. Cats spend 25% of their waking time grooming. The little barbs on their tongue catch a lot of hair, so overall a lot can get swallowed. This is usually passed out in the faeces and is generally considered normal. Cats have evolved to ingest large amounts of hair through grooming, not to mention that they are able to handle small furry creatures such as mice. There have been no large studies on the incidence of hairballs in domestic cats. Small surveys have suggested that around 10% of short- haired cats suffer with the frequent elimination of hairballs; this figure doubles for long-haired cats. So, what can cause hairballs? There are two main causes: 1. Ingesting too much hair • fleas • itchy skin conditions • overgrooming, for example due to stress 2. Abnormal movement of the upper digestive tract • unsuitable diet • bowel disease, for example inflammatory bowel disease • chronic pain or stress Generally, when we see cats who bring up a lot of hairballs, we’re thinking of chronic gastro- intestinal (GI) disease as the first thing to rule out. What are the consequences of hairballs? Normally, hair in the stomach is passed out through the intestine and ends up in the stool. If there is too much hair in there, the ball becomes too big to pass and it is vomited back instead. Too much hair will gather in the stomach if it is ingested in large amounts, or if the stomach isn’t contracting properly to push it through. Occasionally, a hairball can be vomited up into the back of the nose and lodge there. This results in nasal discharge, sneezing, retching and foul breath. If a hairball becomes so large that it cannot physically be vomited up, it will sit in the stomach or intestine indefinitely. This can obviously cause an intestinal obstruction. Hairballs that are present in the digestive tract for long periods can eventually become mineralised - ie calcium is deposited in the fibres and the hairball turns hard. Mineralised hairballs are even harder to pass or vomit and cause more severe symptoms. What to do next if your cat brings up a lot of hairballs? Speak to your vet. As mentioned above, frequent hairball vomiting points to GI disease until proven otherwise; investigations and/or treatment may be necessary. The diagnostic work- up for chronic GI issues often begins with blood tests. Faecal tests, ultrasound scans and biopsies may also be recommended. Diet trials or medication trials may also help reach a diagnosis. Vets will often recommend trialling a bland diet first. Diet-responsive GI disease is very common in cats. Swapping to a bland diet may reduce hairballs. What about hairball diets? ‘Hairball Control’ diets contain high levels of insoluble fibre, to improve stomach motility and enhance the emptying of the stomach. This should make it easier for hairballs to pass. There is also belief that the larger kibble size with these diets is associated with increasing the chances of hairballs exiting the stomach. There are no studies into the effectiveness of Hairball Control diets, but anecdotally they seem to work. However, switching blindly to one of these risks missing any underlying issues, plus a lot of them are dry food and may not be the best thing for cats. What else can be done? Daily grooming to remove loose hair (especially in long-haired cats) is important. Severe cases may require a full ‘lion clip’ to reduce the coat to a length that better represents what the cat’s digestive tract evolved to handle. Small, frequent meals encourage better emptying of the stomach, hopefully passing hairballs through. Lubricants (such as Katalax or plain old liquid paraffin) are a controversial suggestion. They may be worth a try; they are odourless and tasteless so often go down well in food.* There are also medications available that increase stomach motility. Speak to your vet about these. *IMPORTANT: please never syringe liquid paraffin into your cat’s mouth. Aspiration into the lungs is a real risk and extremely dangerous if it occurs. Always give it mixed in with food. Down on the Farm by Angela Sargent T his month will see farmers starting to combine the results of many months work and investment as the wheat, barley and other cereals are ready. Tractors and machinery will have been cleaned and overhauled, parts replaced through wear and tear and sheds/silos cleaned and disinfected to meet storage requirements Keeping the stored crop pest free is important(as not only humans want to eat the crop) and standards have to be met. There are so many regulatory bodies who want to check that everyone is doing as they should- some unannounced and some who give warning-farmers don’t have to necessarily let them come in but we would lose money/ assurance etc if we didn’t. Grass growth is slowing as we get towards the end of summer and it is getting past its best and most palatable stage -the pollen count has been particularly high for a prolonged period this year (much to the discomfort of hayfever sufferers!). Black grass, an invasive weed of arable land, can swamp the crop and make it unviable-it is very resistant to herbicides and used to be controlled by burning the stubble/cultivation of the soil immediately after harvest. The seed can be carried from field to field on machinery (or farm to farm). Straw is useful for livestock farmers-both as a feed and for bedding, so it is conserved in bales, but in areas where there is little livestock and prices are such that it is costly to transport, it is chopped and incorporated back into the soil. Aphids bother cereal crops too, just like in the garden and all attacks from pests affect the yield and, therefore, profitability. Ladybirds eat Aphids whilst both larvae and adults, but I haven’t seen any around just lately. The Seven-spot Ladybird is native and quite small, but there is another more aggressive, bigger one-Harlequin Ladybird, which was originally introduced for Aphid control, but it has gone on to decimate our native ladybugs too! Surprisingly, when going to get something from our tool shed, one afternoon recently, hubby came rushing out exclaiming there was a barn owl flapping round his head! Obviously hunting for something- probably mice, it didn’t linger and flew out shortly afterwards! Talking of mice- we had an Inspector call round to check on our environmental schemes and, whilst looking at the newly planted apple trees, we noticed the younger ones had been nibbled(we thought by caterpillars ) but on further investigation(and finding a small pile of droppings) I think it might be mice responsible too! • 41. Karen’s Cake Corner by Karen Hill Strawberry Daiquiri Cupcakes I thought it was about time I did another of my cocktail cupcakes. I made twelve and took them around to my lovely neighbour, and we devoured the lot! The puree in these cupcakes is also delicious eaten alone with vanilla ice cream. To make 12 cupcakes you will need the following:- Strawberry and rum puree 500g strawberries 50g caster sugar 1 tsp cornflour 50ml white rum Cupcake Lime sponge 230g unsalted butter 230g caster sugar 4 eggs 25g cornflour 230g self raising flour 1 ½ tsp baking powder 2 limes, juice and zest Rum Icing 1115g unsalted butter 60ml white rum 500g icing sugar 1 tbsp lime juice zest of 1 lime 12 strawberries to decorate Preheat the oven to 160˚C fan. Line a 12 hole muffin tray with muffin cases. Firstly make the puree by blending the strawberries, sugar and cornflour until smooth. Cook over a medium heat for 20 minutes, stirring occasionally. When removed from heat, stir in the rum and allow to cool. To make the lime sponge, cream together the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs, gradually and mix well. Add the flour, cornflour and baking powder, alternating with the lime juice and zest. Spoon the batter into the muffin cases, filling each one about two thirds full. Bake for approximately 20-25 minutes until slightly raised and golden. Remove from oven and cool in tray for 10 minutes, then turn out onto a wire rack to cool completely. When the cakes are cooled, cut out a teaspoon sized piece from the top of each one and fill with the puree. To make the icing, blend together the butter, rum and half the icing sugar until combined. Add remaining icing sugar along with the lime juice and zest and beat until smooth. Use this to ice the cupcakes and decorate with a fresh strawberry. Enjoy, and try not to eat too many! 41Let The Uttoxeter & Cheadle Voice take your business to 13,000 local homes. To advertise, call 01538 751629 or 07733 466 970. Kate’s Kitchen By Kate Cornes Kate once worked as a professional chef for many years, but following a career change, is now employed as a Veterinary Nurse. She still, however, continues to cook home cooked meals for herself, her husband and two young children. Kate is always on the lookout for wholesome but simple recipes that can be prepared in advance for busy working families. Strawberry and passion fruit pavlova A t this time of year there is an abundance of fruit in all the shops, especially strawberries. What better way to put them to good use than a strawberry pavlova. This is one of my favourite desserts and it always goes down well at any event or party. Providing you follow a few simple rules when preparing your meringue, you will be rewarded with the most simple but impressive dessert. These rules are: • Ensure your mixing bowl and whisk are squeaky clean. as any trace of grease will result in the egg whites not whisking up properly. • Crack each egg 1 at a time into a small bowl first before adding to the large bowl. This is incase you break any yolks, as the slightest trace of yolk will also prevent the whites from whisking up properly. • Be patient when adding the sugar. The reason for adding it so slowly is to ensure it dissolves properly between each addition to avoid having a grainy meringue. For a 9inch round dessert, the ingredients are as follows: Baking parchment or ‘BACO’ baking paper (avoid greaseproof paper as it tends to stick) 4 large egg whites 8oz caster sugar (don’t use granulated as it does not dissolve as well as caster) 2 level teaspoons cornflour 2 teaspoons white wine vinegar 300ml double or whipping cream (I prefer whipping as its not as likely to become over whipped if you lose concentration!) Punnet of strawberries, halved or sliced 1 passion fruit, sliced in half, with the contents scooped out. Method Pre heat the oven to 160˚C/fan 140˚C/gas mark and then place a sheet of baking parchment/paper on a tray. In a large clean bowl, add the egg whites and whisk until stiff. A tip to know if you have whisked enough is that you should be able to turn the bowl upside down and none of the meringue will move. Under whisking at this stage will result in a floppy runny mixture once the sugar has been added. Add the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking for around 30 seconds or so inbetween each spoonful. Once all the sugar has been added, mix together the vinegar and cornflour in a separate small bowl. Once the flour has dissolved, whisk the mixture into the meringue. You should now have a lovely thick glossy mixture with stiff peaks. Using a large spoon, blob the mixture onto the baking paper bit by bit, in the shape of a circle. Try to build up the sides if you can so they are higher than the middle. Place in the oven and immediately turn down the heat to 150˚C/fan 130˚C/gas 2 Bake for about 1 hour until it feels firm and is a pale beige colour. Turn off the oven and allow to cool, overnight if possible. Keeping the oven door left closed when cooling will encourage a marshmallow consistency in the middle whilst staying crispy on the outside. Carefully remove the baking paper and place on a serving plate. Spoon on the whipped cream and chopped strawberries. I usually dribble the passion fruit on just prior to serving to keep it looking fresh. Finally, dish up and enjoy! Delicious

Have I got news for you by Uttoxeter’s Gary Hudson, Former BBC Chief News Reporter Gary Hudson is a member of Uttoxeter Lions Club, a former BBC Chief News Reporter and a senior lecturer in Broadcast Journalism at Staffordshire University. First Glastonbury – next stop Lark in the Park It’s been a great summer. In case you’ve forgotten already, it included the thrills of a high- scoring World Cup that saw the hosts humiliated and the Germans – inevitably – winning in style. Then there was the spectacle of the Commonwealth Games, and the Scots showing they don’t expect to live in the shadow of London, either when it comes to organising an international multi-sports extravaganza, or - with an eye on the forthcoming referendum - in the small matter of running a country. So, it might seem that I am stretching my enthusiasm to suggest you should get excited about a family fun day in a local park. But this year’s Lark in the Park – run by Uttoxeter Lions - does have a lot to commend it – not least a headline act fresh from the Glastonbury Festival. Free family fun day on Saturday August 23rd Now obviously, I’m not talking about an act that headlined Glasto. No Arcade Fire or Metallica for us. No, sir, that would be unlikely, and anyway, both of those turns are acquired tastes (personally I love one, hate the other, and won’t say which for fear of alienating you, dear reader). I’d love to tell you our star attraction was Dolly Parton, but that would be improbable for a couple of reasons (a cheap joke, I know, but no worse than her own) mainly to do with the size of the crowds and the budgets involved. Nonetheless, Rudi and Jake Wallenda, from the famous European circus family, have performed at Glasto several times – though clearly not on the pyramid stage - and will be bringing their act to the arena in Bramshall Road Recreation Ground on the afternoon of August 23rd, the Saturday of the Bank Holiday weekend. Their show includes a tiger on a bicycle and a Bullnose Morris car. The car’s authentic: the tiger isn’t, but both are surely in the quirky mould we’ve come to expect at the Lark in the Park, where previous acts have included a bloke who set himself on fire and dived off a hundred foot high platform and a chap who balanced a car on his head. In stark contrast there will also be an exhibition by Ben Long and his falconry school, with demonstrations of the historic craft of flying birds of prey in the arena and a static display of these magnificent raptors, where you can see them up close all afternoon. Something for all the family - almost It’s an eclectic mix – something for all the family except possibly that awkward maiden aunt with a thing about owls. And it’s mostly free. The arena will also be home to performances by Uttoxeter’s excellent town band, and dancing and children’s games – with prizes – compered by internationally-renowned DJ Matt Goodwin, The free attractions around the park include super-jumper trampolines – they’re the ones with bungee harnesses, a children’s roundabout, a climbing wall, donkey rides, kiddies’ trampolines, jousting, a ferris wheel and balloon modelling. Other childen’s favourites with a small charge include bouncy castles, an inflatable dome, a giant slide, and face-painting. There’ll be an ice cream van and hot food, with numerous side-shows and stalls from local organisations. Then there’s the duck race on the brook at the bottom of the field at the end of the afternoon. Tickets for ducks are being sold by Lions Club members in the town centre in the run-up to the event and on the day. You simply buy a ticket for a duck and hope that yours comes in first across the finishing line. They are not real ducks and they’re all exactly the same, so there’s no skill involved. In fact the only difference between the duck race and a raffle is that in a raffle nobody gets wet. By taking the option where people do get wet – even if it’s only the people fishing the plastic ducks out of the brook, I like to think we’re maintaining a well- established tradition at Lark in the Park of taking the wacky option rather than the safe and obvious one. All we need now is the right weather, and we all know how quirky that can be. Fashion Voice by Angela Clinton of Uttoxeter With the British weather as unpredictable as ever,Summer coats have been our fashion saviour. From the Trench to Macs and Parkas to Cocoon coats. With all the heavy showers we have had, it is always an advantage to buy either shower, or waterproofed fabrics. Another option of course is to simply carry a small umbrella. The Trench has and is always an absolute classic. This style never dates and you will be wearing this one for many years to come. I invested in a Burberry trench from a Dress Agency about six years ago and of course the scarf as an accessory. Seasalt do a super quirky, waterproof, windproof, breathable, organic fabric range of jackets and coats. We do have a local stockist in town - Annetta Ross on the High street. Annetta also stocks the Nautical styles in this range, which includes, tops, jackets, and scarves. She has two floors of jeans, trousers, tops, footwear and outfits for every occasion, with experienced and h staff. I personally feel that you need to have confidence in your staff, in being able to assist and advise customers, even though they might not always agree with your comments. If I think a particular top, trousers, dress or suit does not compliment a customer, I explain why. There can be several reasons such as colour, style, length and shape. Customer satisfaction is just as important as sales. When you return home from shopping with us you will certainly be happy with the price, the product, quality and the friendly staff. As mentioned previously we have beautiful maxi,mid-length and short dresses for all ages. The maxi dress in the photograph would normally retail at £50 but in Essentials it retails at £19.99. The ruching around the tummy helps to hide what can be a problem area, and a shrug can be worn to cover upper arms. The jumpsuit has ‘jumped’ on to the high street this summer in various patterns and colours. One of which is the tie-dye effect which we have on the shop floor at Essentials. I have encouraged customers of all ages to try them with amazing results as they are really comfortable to wear. It takes courage to step out of our ‘comfort zone’ and we all have one -including myself. Jump out of that zone and try a jumpsuit as they are perfect for holidays. You can dress them up with a piece of jewellery or a silk scarf. Angela, Essential Clothing.
