2. ‘Good Listener’
Mythical creature
i. What do we mean by a good listener?
ii. Does such thing exist?
We might define good listeners as those;
a) with sensitivity to context, language and nuance
b) Who don’t view listening as the pause before they
talk
3. 1. Good listeners become better
listeners when they are motivated
Motivation plays a vital role in listening
What makes ‘good listeners’ good?
They tend to think ahead
They fill gaps in a narrative
They take ownership of what they hear
They have ability to focus on valuable
information
4. 2. Good listeners realise - ambiguity is
sometimes unavoidable
They don’t get frustrated but bear with it
instead
They persevere in a way that they realise
the hypotheses they make can be checked
later
They are prepared to make a calculated
guess
They are able to hold the info in their
memory and suspend judgment
5. 3. Good listeners become experts
at self-monitoring
They are constantly aware (whether
they achieve the task or not)
They are alert to inconsistencies (in
their interpretations)
They try resolving issues by
collaborating with their
interlocutor.
They revise their interpretations
6. 4. Good listeners become aware
of irony & other tones of voice
They ‘listen between the words’
rather than;
a. Taking every utterance at face value
b. Recognise shifts in intonation (the
way voice pitch rises and falls)
