With over 30 years' experience in the advertising industry and having founded Ogilvy's innovation efforts, Ogilvy Labs, Nicole is now sharing her lessons, trials and tribulations from a life of making innovation work.
Intro - irresisble force against immovable objects (that;s what it takes to innovate)
Potted history - why did this come about - seeped in advertising experience but could see that this wouldnt work. Mattel - tapes etc. Old and new. What’s the problem. Digital transformation. Modern creative world and how it is now and the impact.
Not the usual ogilvy hiring. Nicole is maverick. (lesson 1 - hire different, don’t be frightened) Understand the old way and the new way.
How to effect the change. It’s in the doing. Semesters of learning. Future retail as case study film. I spot, I connect, I create. So you can do this by DOING. Innovative solutions for creative execution, by spotting, connecting and creating (lesson 2 - eyes wide open, sleeves rolled up)

Eyes wide open. By keeping eyes open to opportunities - new creative and tech mix found. BETWEEN - meeting Martin Ware, Fanta. Been doing this so long, old video. Kids could hear mosquito sound etc. (lesson 3 - no isn’t an option - lots of barriers along the way - find a way make a way).

Partnerships, collaboration, black book, Startup, mentor, give back, offer cup of tea, can’t do it alone. Humble enough to know you’re no better than anyone; wise enough to know you’re different. Bring humbleness back. Relationships matter. (lesson 4 - OPen minded and open hearted)
You can’t expect change by doing the same thing over and over again - einstein quote. Talent of the future. Wanted kids about to be expelled. Rough Diamond – explain how it worked. (lesson 5 - want the kids about to be expelled - cos they ask the most basic questions - ask why - fearless - can’t be educated in the same way - open - entrepreneurial)
Measuring success. Business is still business. Not living in some utopia. When you’re innovating how do you measure success. 6 Rs. Telegraph article. (lesson 6 - don’t just measure the financials - there are many differents measures for business)
The fearless. The tiger quote. BBC case study - don’t accept status quo. No one would work with BBC but would work with labs. So Nicole chaired advisroy board. Started meeting with McKinsey style pres for 2 hours, with Q2RF - no value to anyone around the table. Got up and said never doing this again. Why people aren’t working - you don’t pay their bill quick enough so they go under. Procurement process is too long. Fix internal processes. So Nic being fearless and saying that. If you change then I’ll help. Connected studio. I didn’t have axe to grind as they’re not my paymaster (lesson 7 - Be honest and trust your instinct. Saying what needs to be said, not what somebody wants to hear)
Be inspired / future is bright. Judging at Cannes Lions innovation, Having understanding of machine learning, talking about humans need not apply. Pessimist would think we’re going down, optimist sees different jobs in workforce being created. (lesson 8 - be inspired, the future is bright - take an optimistic view of the world) So if you have the optimistic way, you’re going to be the one seeking out the opportunities. More likely to be ahead
Social enterprise / UN goals. Not CSR. Not NGOs. Not charity. Companies set up to do good but make money. (lesson 9 - if you’re investing - look for this. As a brand in the future, there is room for you to still make money and do good. Keep an eye on UN global goals - what are you doing with this?)
Get out your comfort zone - that’s where the magic happens. Know no one / nothing. Just say yes. Out of my comfort zone right now - in industry for years as paid employee, now what. (lesson 10 - get out of comfort zone)
NY future? Who am I today? Should you say yes to everything? Now a creative innovator. Creativity across different genres but all needing it. No one knows what to do. Not like TV where we know the formula to make an ad. Landscape has changed beyond belief. (lesson 11 - think like a startup)
Ross Bailey - labs put money in, helped him as an ideapreneur. Gave money for first thing. Showed belief. Soundbite of Ross’ digital shoreditch talk? (lesson 12 - Pay it forward)
