Men and boys are disadvantaged by simplistic
gender stereotyping
In RSA 70% of men see themselves (& the
evidence supports them) as ‘good guys’
(various research reports including MRC and
Sonke Gender Justice)
Policy and media emphasise the 30%
Gender programmes emphasise the 30%

      We focus on ‘growing’ the 70
                   growing’     70%

There is now a global consensus (including
 the NSP) that we must engage boys and men
 in HIV/AIDs related issues such as gender
 relations, treatment and care etc.
Growing the 70% involves –
 Supporting some existing behaviours
 Encouraging new behaviours
 Nurturing changed behaviours
To do that we need to give the 70% a platform
                  for change

Male-positive and sex-positive programmes
that encourage discussion about the 70/30
A structured, safe space to explore the
challenges of growing up male in RSA today
Safe places to discuss the behaviours of girls
and young women
Focus on different masculinities, sex and
relationships, rights as well as responsibilities
Time for the boys to reflect and try out the
theory
With support from their communities

6 x 3 hr sessions over about 4 weeks;
Iterative learning (HIV, gender based violence
and more);

Using materials designed just for boys and
young men

The programme needs skilled facilitation and
   as much community support as possible

Sex and Relationship Education was re-
named Boys 2 Men in Limpopo
“ These topics (HIV / gender based violence /
power relations) are taboo and remain highly
guarded secrets within our communities”
“Boys 2 Men gave us the opportunity to begin
to talk about these issues and we welcomed
the opportunity”

 The boys are now driving the programme
  through their communities through their
             informal’
            ‘informal’ networks

The Boys have knowledge that is often
contradictory
Many of their lives are very tough
They want decent futures
They respond with enthusiasm and humour,
have contributed to programme design &
have requested more programmes
Adults in their communities welcome the
programme and have asked for more of them

Demand for this rights based programme is
increasing
To achieve this significant numbers of high
quality facilitators are required
Funding is difficult to access
Girls are demanding a parallel programme
As a niche, community outreach institute at
UL we have had to re-define our role (from
implementer       facilitator) in order to take
this programme to scale

 We – as an institute - will only implement
     locally where we have the capacity

Developing a SAQA accredited training
programme for Facilitators
Substantially increasing the number of
facilitators able to deliver the Boys 2 Men
Programme

The first cohort (of 25) will complete the
course at the end of March 2010, and the
Limpopo Province Regional Training Centre in
collaboration with DevFTI, plans to run 3
further courses next year

Male-positive and sex-positive programmes that encourage discussion about the 70/30 A structured, safe space to explore the challenges of growing up male in RSA today Safe places to discuss the behaviours of girls and young women Focus on different masculinities, sex and relationships, rights as well as responsibilities Time for the boys to reflect and try out the theory With support from their communities Development, Facilitation and Training Institute – SAHARA, 3rd December, 2009

Sex and Relationship Education was re- named Boys 2 Men in Limpopo “ These topics (HIV / gender based violence / power relations) are taboo and remain highly guarded secrets within our communities” “Boys 2 Men gave us the opportunity to begin to talk about these issues and we welcomed the opportunity” The boys are now driving the programme through their communities through their informal’ ‘informal’ networks Development, Facilitation and Training Institute – SAHARA, 3rd December, 2009

The Boys have knowledge that is often contradictory Many of their lives are very tough They want decent futures They respond with enthusiasm and humour, have contributed to programme design & have requested more programmes Adults in their communities welcome the programme and have asked for more of them Development, Facilitation and Training Institute – SAHARA, 3rd December, 2009

Demand for this rights based programme is increasing To achieve this significant numbers of high quality facilitators are required Funding is difficult to access Girls are demanding a parallel programme As a niche, community outreach institute at UL we have had to re-define our role (from implementer facilitator) in order to take this programme to scale Development, Facilitation and Training Institute – SAHARA, 3rd December, 2009

Developing a SAQA accredited training programme for Facilitators Substantially increasing the number of facilitators able to deliver the Boys 2 Men Programme The first cohort (of 25) will complete the course at the end of March 2010, and the Limpopo Province Regional Training Centre in collaboration with DevFTI, plans to run 3 further courses next year Development, Facilitation and Training Institute – SAHARA, 3rd December, 2009
