2. Distribution – The mountain gorilla is found only in
the Virunga Volcanoes region in the highlands of
eastern Zaire, Ruwanda and Uganda. The eastern
lowland gorilla lives in eastern Zaire, while the
western lowland is found in west Africa
Conservation – Only the mountain gorilla is
endangered. Fewer than about 450 mountain
gorillas exist in the wild
3. Distribution – The range of the Indian rhino has
contracted eastwards and it is now found only in 10
locations in India and Nepal
Conservation – Widespread poaching has meant that
the Indian rhino only survives in protected parks. The
population is now rising steadily, although the species
only numbers 1500 animals and remains in some
danger of extinction.
Habitat – The Indian rhino lives in the dense jungles
of tall elephant grass found growing in swampy areas
close to rivers. Here, the rhino finds the wallows, or
areas of shallow water and soft mud, that it needs to
keep cool during the heat of the day. It occasionally
moves to higher wooded country in search of food.
On such journeys, the rhino often follows the path of
a rocky stream bed into the hills
4. Distribution – The Bengal tiger is most
numerous in the Sundarbans region of India
and Bangladesh. It is also found in northern
and central India and in Myanmar and Nepal.
Conservation – In 1900 India’s tiger population
was estimated at around 50,000. By 1972 this
number had dropped to 1850. A conservation
programme has increased this to about 4000
Habitat – The Bengal tiger is most numerous in the
mangrove forests of the Sundarbans region of eastern India
and Bangladesh, where the River Ganges pours into the Bay
of Bengal. Although less common, it is also found in parts of
northern and central India, as well as in jungle regions of
Nepal and Myanmar. The Bengal tiger needs a large home
range in which to live and hunt.
5. Distribution – The humpback frequents cold and
polar seas for most of the year, subtropical seas in
winter. A few populations are resident in the tropics
Conservation – From an original total of about
150,000, hunting has reduced the population to some
6-8,000. Commercial hunting has ended, but the
population is still vulnerable
