ANDRIES BOTHA DURBAN, OCTOBER 2007
Issues to consider:-
1. The role of men, masculinity as a metaphor for
domination and control - how they have influenced
history.
2. Forgetting & remembering – (dis)Appearance(s)
3. Paying attention to the intimate - noticing the
smaller things in life, including intimate
relationships.
5. Issue 1:The role of men / masculinity as a
metaphor for domination and control.
Q1.In your own words, explain what Botha thinks about
this issue. (5 marks)
Q2. Explain how ‘installations’ and ‘sculpture’ work
together. (5 marks)
Q3. Examine the illustration - Afrikaner circa 1600 -
and discuss how Botha uses ‘Materials as metaphor’
in the work.
Use the following materials (mentioned under the
illustration) as a guideline:
• embroidered felt (in the pillow)
• cow skin (in the ’man’)
• found objects (the picture on the wall; the lamp
on the left of the man; the impala head)
• wax & plaster of Paris (in the bust of his father)
• zinc walls & – vinyl (on the floor)
• African wood (in the table)
• electrical / mechanical components (rocking the
man & the impala head)
(10 marks)

7. (dis)Appearance(s) – the artist’s statement
This exhibition, of sculptures and drawings, looks at
creativity not only as an intimate language of individual
expression but also acknowledges creativity as integrated
into a broader framework of history and culture.
This exhibition pays particular attention to the role of men,
masculinity as a metaphor for domination and control, how
they have influenced history. Relationships which are
developed between a father and a son, lay the framework
for these masculine metaphors.
8. It is my opinion that men are increasingly absent
from their structural roles in society. For some reason
they no longer participate as functional partners with
women. As a result, relationships have become
dysfunctional, family structures are breaking down,
societies are fragmenting, nations are in conflict and
the world is ecologically damaged. It is also
important to note that some women have remained
complicit in perpetuating these stereotypes.
9. The importance of noticing the smaller things in life,
paying attention to the intimate, understanding that we
do not impact on the big epic events but rather
influence the destinies of those closer to us.
It is necessary for us to remember the value of other
people's lives and what they have done, even if we do
not agree with them.
We need to live our lives closer to home, pay attention
to the particular and acknowledge that our lives are
shaped more by the idea of collectivity and less by
individuality.
10. Let’s look at the use of ‘materials as metaphor’
• embroidered felt (in the pillow)
• cow skin & stitching
(in the ’man’)
11. • found objects (the picture
on the wall; the lamp on
the left of the man; the
impala head)
• zinc walls & vinyl
(on the floor)
12. • African wood (in the table)
• electrical / mechanical components (rocking the
man & the impala head
13. • wax & plaster of Paris (in the bust of his father)
Could you write about the two remaining
issues?
2. Forgetting & remembering –
(dis)Appearance(s)
3. Paying attention to the intimate - noticing
the smaller things in life, including
relationships.
