2. • A sink — also known by other names
including sinker, washbowl, hand basin, and
wash basin is a bowl-shaped plumbing
fixture used for washing hands,
dishwashing, and other purposes.
• Sinks have taps (faucets) that supply hot
and cold water and may include a spray
feature to be used for faster rinsing.
• They also include a drain to remove used
water, this drain may itself include a strainer
and/or shut-off device and an overflow-
prevention device.
• Many sinks, especially in kitchens, are
installed adjacent to or inside a counter.WHAT IS A SINK ?
3. When used as nouns, sink means a basin used
for holding water for washing, whereas
washbasin means a basin used for washing,
particularly a permanently installed sink, fitted
with a water supply and a drain, in which one
may wash one's hands and face.
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN
SINKS AND WASHBASIN
4. HISTORY
The washstands were small tables on which were placed a
pitcher and a deep bowl, following the English tradition.
Sometimes the table had a hole where the large bowl rested,
which led to the making of dry sinks.
From about 1820 to 1900, the dry sink evolved by the
addition of a wooden cabinet with a trough built on the top,
lined with zinc or lead. This is where the bowls or buckets for
water were kept. Splashboards were sometimes added to
the back wall, as well as shelves and drawers, the more
elaborate designs usually placed in the kitchen.
5. USES
washing our hands, clean our dishes and for other cleaning
related purposes. This fixture usually comes with a faucet,
either supplying cold or tap water, or in some homes, it can
supply us with both hot and cold water.

7. BASED ON
INSTALLATION
An undermount sink is installed directly under the counter, creating a
seamless look from countertop to sink. This type of sink is versatile
and works with most kitchen layouts. Not only do these sinks look
sleek, but they also make for easy clean up because debris can be
pushed straight into the sink without catching on a lip or rim.
UNDERMOUNT SINK
A top mount kitchen sink, also known as a drop-in sink, drops in to the
counter which creates a lip or rim around the sink. This is a versatile
option because it's easy to install and provides extra support meaning
that you can use almost any material, no matter how heavy. One factor
to consider is that grime and debris can get caught on the lip and can
make the cleanup more difficult.
TOPMOUNT SINK
8. FARMHOUSE OR APRON SINK
A farmhouse style sink, extends over the edge of your counter.
They are large single basin sinks distinguished by their front wall,
which forms both the front of the sink and the front of the
counter. The most popular type of installation is with the sink
level and integrated in the counters. However, apron sinks are
sometimes installed "country style": on top of a cabinet or on a
freestanding table (fixed against the wall) and not surrounded by
counters. They can be pricey and are more difficult to install
because you have to cut out a large portion of your counter.
• These generously sized sinks make it easier to wash big
casserole and baking
• Because there is less room between the sink and the
edge of the counter, the person using the sink can
move in a little bit closer to the sink, avoiding fatigue.
• Many people love the "farmhouse" look of an apron
sink
PROS
• Apron sinks are prone to dripping, as there is
only a narrow barrier between the sink and
the floor.
• Can be very expensive compared to other sink
styles

10. 1. SINGLE BASIN / BOWL SINK
Single bowl kitchen sinks are great for small kitchens with
limited counter space. Single bowl sinks make cleaning
large cookware much easier because you can lay them flat
at the bottom and not have to worry about debris
splashing onto your counter.
They're recommended for smaller households or single
individuals.
• The single basin is large enough to wash big items such
as casseroles or a large pan and no divider to bump into
as they are roomier.
• Especially in kitchens with limited counter space, single-
bowl sinks have an advantage over the usually larger
double-bowl designs.
PROS
• Be prepared to have a drying area on the side
of the sink, as single basin sinks have no room
for this.
• Single basins are less popular due to their
inflexibility as they aren't great for
multitasking like cleaning and cooking at the
same time
• They’re not as disposal-friendly.
CONS
11. 2. DOUBLE BASIN / BOWL SINK
A double-bowl (or divided) sink has two basins in one unit,
usually separated by a divider. Traditionally, both sinks
would be the same size, and you’d fill one bowl with hot
soapy water and the other with clear water for rinsing,
however double-bowl sinks are available in a variety of sizes
and configurations: Manufacturers now make some double
units with one sink smaller—say, half the size of the main
one, which means that the unit as a whole takes up less
counter space. Sometimes the smaller sink is shallower as
well.
• Multi-purpose and highly flexible if you prefer to hand-
wash your dishes
• Generally the garbage disposal is installed in the
smaller sink, so it’s accessible when the main sink is
filled with water or unwashed dishes.
• In a double-bowl sink, you can stack dirty dishes in one
sink while preparing a meal and use the other for
vegetable prep.
PROS
• The size and profile can be cumbersome.
• It eats up under-counter storage space.
• Either side can be too small to accommodate
large pots, baking pans, or casseroles.
• Some homeowners dislike the utilitarian
appearance of a double sink.
CONS
12. 3. DRAINBOARD SINK
Kitchen sinks with drainboards are practical and eco-friendly.
Typically found in stainless steel, drainboards are a built-in sink
feature that makes food prep simple and mess-free as it creates
a designated food preparation section of your counter. The
drainboard also provides a spot to dry dishes and other
kitchenware by allowing excess water to run off into the sink.
• These smaller types of sinks are great in galley kitchens
or any limited space.
• Because the drainboard portion has a lip around it, it
traps water and quickly drains it back to the sink.
• This method leaves you with cleaner counters and saves
energy by not using your dishwasher to wash and dry
dishes.
• Drainboard can be used to collect food scraps.
PROS
• Basins tend to be small in drainboard sinks
• If you rarely wash dishes by hand you'll have
little use for the drainboard.
• Though drainboard sinks free up a sink basin,
they gobble up valuable countertop space.
CONS
13. 4.LOW DIVIDER DOUBLE BASIN SINK
• Low divider sinks are a perfect combination of single
basin and double basin sinks. When you fill one side low
with water, it works as a double basin sink. But if you
need extra room for big pans, simply keep filling higher
so that the water overflows the divider.
• Most people find the low divider sink easier to use for
food prep.
PROS
• Since not many manufacturers offer low
divider sinks, prices tend to be higher than for
other types, such as single basin, double basin,
and even farmhouse sinks
• While in theory, it can double for a single basin
sink, the low divider sink has less room for
large items such as casseroles or broiler pans.
CONS
A low divider kitchen sink is a double basin sink, but instead
of the divider rising to the level of the top of the sink, it stops
partway up.
14. 5. BAR / PREP SINK
• Secondary sinks make it easier for multiple people to
prep food at the same time
• These sinks are a great addition if you entertain
frequently and want easy access to a bar sink while also
preparing or cleaning up from a meal
• They are versatile and don’t take up much space.
PROS
• Some homeowners install these sinks with
good intentions, yet rarely end up using them.
• Depending on your kitchen layout, secondary
sinks can take up valuable counter real estate.
• Secondary sinks are a luxury that may break
your budget unnecessarily.
CONS
Bar sinks are usually single sinks installed in a home wet
bar and are generally smaller and more shallow than
your average kitchen sink, making them a secondary
option. They are typically a single bowl design used for
prep work, drink-making and convenient cleanup. If you
have a large family or group of friends, a bar sink is great
for entertaining in your home bar, patio or terrace.
15. 6. ISLAND SINK
• Including a sink in the design of your kitchen island is
likely to improve the functionality of your food
preparation at meal times.
• You will be able to socialize with friends or family
members while doing the washing up or preparing
food. It is likely that if you had a sink on your counter-
top, you’ll be facing the wall!
PROS
• Washing up is Visible, Having a pile of plates
and bowls on your kitchen island is enough to
ruin the aesthetic of your whole kitchen.
• a sink can take up a lot of space on a kitchen
island.
• Extra costs of installing plumbing to your
kitchen island.
CONS
These sinks can be used as a primary or prep sink, depending
on your needs. Kitchen island sinks are a great way to
compliment your workflow and save you space on your main
counter. They can also turn your kitchen island into a
complete workspace. They look beautiful on a wood, granite
or stainless steel island, so your options are endless in terms
of design.
16. 7. INTEGRATED SINK
• Because integrated sinks can come in many materials,
you have many choices.(quartz, marble, and granite)
• Customizable
• Ties in the space
• Easy to clean
PROS
• it looks elegant and thus expensive
• The best thing about integrated sinks is also its
worst feature when the time comes to replace
either the sink or the countertop.
• Staining and scratching might be issues
CONS
An integrated sink is a sink and countertop in one, typically
made of one material. For example, a granite integrated
sink will have a sink actually hewn from granite. In many
cases, the integrated sink is a cohesive or single piece. In
other cases, the installer joins the countertop to the sink
during installation and takes special care to make it appear
seamless. The result is the same: a sleek and smooth look.
17. 8. CORNER SINK
PROS
• Corner sinks are rarely needed and are thus
hard to find.
• When you can find them, corner sinks are
expensive.
• These sinks require custom cuts in the
counters. Since most kitchen counters are
seamed at the corners, these sinks are forced
to bridge this seam, reducing the structural
strength of the countertop in that area.
CONS
Corner sinks are double-basin sinks installed on a corner of
your counter. They are set at right angles to each other.. This
is a relatively unique design that can be useful if you are
looking to maximize your counter space.
• Saves counter space.
• Some corner sinks are spaced wide enough to have a
built-in drying area in the center section.

19. 1. FIRECLAY
PROS
• Corner sinks are rarely needed and are thus
hard to find.
• When you can find them, corner sinks are
expensive.
• These sinks require custom cuts in the
counters. Since most kitchen counters are
seamed at the corners, these sinks are forced
to bridge this seam, reducing the structural
strength of the countertop in that area.
CONS
Fireclay sinks are made from clay and glaze fusing together at
very high temperatures, upwards of 1600 degrees Fahrenheit.
Fireclay sinks are almost identical to cast iron sinks but tend to
be slightly more durable. They won't chip, etch or stain and
you can use abrasive cleaners unlike on a cast iron sink.
Fireclay sinks are usually more expensive than cast iron due to
the more extensive fabrication process.
• Saves counter space.
• Some corner sinks are spaced wide enough to have a
built-in drying area in the center section.
20. 2. COPPER
PROS CONS
• Gives alluring look to the kitchen largely handmade
by craftsmen thicker copper is less noisy than
stainless steel sink and more resistant to denting easy
to maintain
• the shining copper can develop a deep brown
colour over time if not maintained properly
the copper sinks alluring look makes it a bold and
striking addition to any kitchen but it has some
unique characteristics.
21. 3. CONCRETE
PROS CONS
• Strength
• Adaptability
• Affordable
• Personalization
• Cracking
• Time taking
The concrete sink takes an inexpensive material,
formerly used only for construction and
foundations, and turns it into something sculptural
and bespoke.
A customized sink made of ceramic, for example, is
considerably harder to produce, as it requires kiln-
firing at high temperatures. But concrete, a much
more forgiving material, is easily transformed into
almost any shape you can imagine.
22. 4. CAST IRON
PROS CONS
• Gives alluring look to the kitchen largely handmade
by craftsmen thicker copper is less noisy than
stainless steel sink and more resistant to denting easy
to maintain
• the shining copper can develop a deep brown
colour over time if not maintained properly
The cast iron material for kitchen sinks begins with
the casting of the iron. During this process, the
makers coat the iron in durable enamel. This style of
sink is perfect for those who need a sturdy and
reliable material that withstands years of use and
damage.
23. 5. STAINLESS STEEL
PROS CONS
• highly durable to corrosion and rust resistant comes
with Slender guarantees
• Low maintenance generally the cheapest of all the
materials
• Top Mount flushmount undermount options are
available
• noisy film stainless steel sinks are more likely
to scratch get dented easily if something
heavy is dropped in.
Stainless steel kitchen Sink are the most popular
things and it is available in different shapes sizes
and even finishes
24. 6. GRANITE
PROS CONS
• extremely durable
• antibacterial surface
• long-time guarantee
• easy to clean
• wide range of colours sizes and styles available
• very hard surface it can damage things that
are dropped on it
• need careful maintenance
• it is heavy than stainless Steel Sink so that
requires sturdier Worktop
Granite composite sinks are constructed by gluing crushed
granite together with a resin filler. This type of sink is
incredibly durable and stain resistant while also providing a
cutting-edge and modern aesthetic to any kitchen. Granite
composite has an inherent sound absorbing effect due to
its density. If you're considering a granite composite sink,
they are heavier than stainless steel sinks, so you may want
to consider adding structural support to accommodate for
the extra weight.
