2. What are OER?
“OER are teaching, learning and
research resources that reside in the
public domain or have been released
under an intellectual property license
that permits their free use or repurposing by others.”
– The William & Flora Hewlett Foundation
4. Why use OER?
Access – Open Educational Resources allows
for all students to have equal access to all
course materials
Affordability – Open Educational Resources are
free or very low cost, significantly reducing
educational expenses
Student Success – Open Educational
Resources are high quality educational
materials available in a variety of engaging
formats for all learners
5. How is ELI addressing OER?

Create greater awareness of OER at NOVA;
Help faculty to identify existing OER and/or create new
OER materials to increase faculty control of course
content and improve teaching and learning;
Make education more accessible and affordable for all
learners at NOVA and throughout the VCCS by doing
away with the requirement for students to purchase and

8. Project Resources
Faculty were provided grant funded stipends
to redesign a course using OER instead of
traditional textbooks.
ELI resources (Librarian, Instructional
Designers) were provided to assist in course
design and development, and OER curation.
All course material developed for this project
will be shared throughout the VCCS and
licensed through Creative Commons after the
pilot.
9. Team Designed Course
Approach
Administrative leadership
and advocacy
Faculty are the course

Average cost for textbooks = $185 (new)
13. Significant Cost Savings
A student completing the entire OER-Based
Gen Ed Certificate would potentially save
$1845 over the cost of new textbooks in the
traditional textbook-based courses.
The current estimated savings to students
enrolled in the fall OER pilot courses is in
excess of $140,000!
14. Anticipated Outcomes
These courses will be more affordable and
accessible to community college students.
Students will save thousands of dollars
and all students will have equal access
to all OER course materials.
Student Success rates will improve.
Student demand for these courses
will drive future OER course
development leading to a full
OER-based AS degree.
