The 1954 Supreme Court case Brown vs. Board of Education ruled that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional, overturning the 1896 Plessy vs. Ferguson decision that allowed "separate but equal" schools. The landmark decision helped launch the Civil Rights Movement and sought to end racial discrimination and segregation in America.
