Year 12 will include the completion of
the “Certificate in Business” which will
include three units:
The Business environment which is
about understanding the different types
of business and how they are influenced
by the environment
3. Course content
Business resources which involve
developing an understanding of
managing core resources amiable to
business, including
human, physical, technological and
financial
as well as one optional unit form a list of
20 ranging from Accounts to Events
management.
4. UCAS
The grading for this on UCAS is:
Distinction * = 70 UCAS points
Distinction = 60 UCAS point
Merit = 40 UCAS points
Pass = 20 UCAS points.
5. Second Year
In year 13 the students progress to the
“Introductory Diploma in Business”
which will include three additional units
of:
Business Accounting, Recruitment and
selection in business and one other
additional unit
6. Second year cont.
Business Accounting will involve the
students learning about some of the
most common financial accounts as well
as reviewing the performance of the
business though ratio analysis.
Recruitment and selection in business
will enable the students to appreciate
the recruitment and selection process of
a business from the documents used to
the interview selection process
7. UCAS
combing this with the year 12 work will
allow them to achieve the following
points for UCAS
Distinction * = 140 UCAS points
Distinction = 120 UCAS points
Merit = 80 UCAS points
Pass = 40 UCAS points.
8. Unit 12 Recruitment and
Selection
Identify a Vacancy
At this stage the company may be expanding
and now requires additional employees, staff
may be promoted or staff might also leave the
company to work somewhere else, or staff
may leave for personal reasons (illness, won
the lottery, maternity leave, etc…)
Job Analysis
Identifies and records the responsibilities and
tasks relating to a job.
9. Job Description
A job description outlines the
responsibilities and duties to be carried
out by someone employed to do a
specific job. This needs to be a useful
and up-to-date document. It will form
the basis for the job advertisement and
for any information sent by the company
to the applicants for the job.
10. Person Specification
A person specification is a document which outlines the
requirements, qualifications, expertise and physical
characteristics etc. for the job.

11. Advertising the Vacancy
This can be done either internally or
externally. Internally is when you
advertise within the
workplace, externally is when you
advertise outside the workplace. Where
a company advertises will vary
depending on the job.

13. Shortlist Applications
Once the advert has been placed and
the company receives either CV’s or
Application forms the company will then
select the best candidates for an
interview. The number of applicants
short-listed will vary from business to
business. They will short-list applicants
by comparing them to the Person
Specification which was written for the
Job, they may do numeracy, personality
and aptitude tests.
14. Interview
Once the company has short-listed the
applicants they will then invite them in for an
interview.
Again how interviews are conducted vary from
one business to another. They will either be:
On a one-to-one basis
Group Interviews
Panel interviews
Phone Interviews
They may even ask people to complete tests
or presentations during the interview.
15. Select the Best Applicant for the job
The final stage of the Recruitment and
Selection process is to notify the successful
candidate that you would like to offer them the
position, this can be done by phone, email or
face-to-face, which ever method is used a
formal letter offering the job to the candidate
will also be sent. It is also polite to inform the
other candidates that they are unsuccessful.
At this stage the company will then contact the
candidates reference. These are people you
ask to vouch for you, they tend to be your last
two employees or a teacher.
16. Research and explain the how
a
Homework – research to different
companies and explain the steps they
take in recruitment and selection, you
should explain in detail whether they use
internal or external methods or both.
