As NFC Forum Chair it is my pleasure to welcome you to our Open Forum. Thank you for joining us. For the next five minutes I’m going to tell you a story. The story is about a technology we come into contact with almost daily and but rarely notice. We rarely notice it because the technology – Near Field Communication – simply put, just works. NFC works with contactless credit cards and with Apple Pay and Google Pay. You can start your car with it, unlock a hotel door, use for your mobile driver’s license – the list goes on and on.. All of these activities include NFC. Now, let’s learn more about NFC . . .
The NFC Forum story started two decades ago. Today, NFC is one of the most used technologies on the planet. It is woven into the fabric of the daily lives of billions of people. These statistics are from a recent study by ABI Research on the NFC user experience. NFC contactless cards still lead the market but wearables and smartphones are rapidly catching up. Let’s see what the statistics say.
That first statistic on the last slide is from an NFC Forum sponsored global research study by ABI Research. The survey tells an evolving NFC story. Although NFC is found in most contactless cards, wearables and smartphones are rapidly becoming a preferred way of using NFC. The contactless cards are now being stored in the digital wallet. NFC is truly everywhere and being used by more and more people. Can we consider NFC successful?
Frankly, It’s not a question of is NFC successful. Instead, it is a question of how successful can NFC become? According to Statistica, three billion smartphones are in use putting NFC literally right in the hands of people. NFC Forum data shows that about 60 NFC-enabled devices are produced per second in the world including a growing variety of wearables IHS numbers show that 20% of the world’s population can use NFC today. NFC is already successful. How successful it becomes is in our hands, literally
NFC is mainstream and out-front. It is versatile and used in countless applications around the globe. You see NFC being used by Nike in sports apparel. The automotive industry and close to 100% of the 39 major car brands according to an NFC Forum survey use NFC for multiple applications. It is also very important in transportation where it plays a key role as an enabler of Mobility-aa-a-Service or MaaS in upwards of a 1,000 cities in the world. Anywhere you need to offer access, information, identity or to initiate an action, NFC can play a role. Some countries and states are even testing mobile driver’s licenses using NFC on your smartphone.
The most common and well-recognized item NFC is associated with are contactless credit cards. But did you know NFC is also, increasingly, being added to jewelry and various accessories? Some people have embedded an NFC chip in their hand. It’s a messy procedure that we won’t go into now!
Lately, it is this contactless nature of NFC that is helping to further proliferate the technology due to COVID-19 concerns.
NFC is a standards-based short-range wireless connectivity technology that makes your smartphones, wearables, tablets and other devices even smarter. NFC is built into billions of NFC-enabled devices in use and is compatible with hundreds of millions of contactless cards and readers already deployed worldwide. Briefly touch (or ‘tap’) your NFC-enabled smartphone to another NFC-enabled object to share pictures, play music, make payments, access useful information, and more easily set up Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections. No PIN codes, camera-based scanners, or wires are required to use this simple, intuitive technology. Wireless charging was just introduced last year and soon you’ll be able to wirelessly charge small IoT devices like earbuds with your mobile phone thanks to NFC.
