AXES (http://axes-project.eu) was a project co-funded by the European Union’s Seventh Programme for Research, Technological Development and Demonstration. The goal of AXES was to develop tools that provide various types of users with new engaging ways to interact with audiovisual libraries, helping them to discover, browse, search and enrich video archives. The OW2 WebLab (http://weblab-project.org) integration platform for multimedia processing has been used to aggregate the services developed by 9 partners in order to build the three demonstrators targeting various user groups: the media professionals, the journalists and researchers as well as the home users. As a result of the AXES project, OW2 "Open AXES", is born. It provides a complete solution that gathers innovative audiovisual content analysis technologies (shot and keyframes detection, image classification, speech transcription, large scale indexing, similarity search, etc.) as well as an ergonomic interface to retrieve and navigate in video archives.

The nuage R&D project to create a strongly secured, resilient, distributed cloud based on opensource standard end in summer 2014. Two components have been released by the partners of the consortium. September 2014, Celeste present the StarDC, a mini datacenter ready to use in 4 month for 150 K€. April 2015, Non Stop Systems, the consortium leader, present CloudStar, a private cloud controller full open source (Debian-Openstack-Ceph-Zabbix...) ready to use in 5 weeks for 30 K€. Those two components bring full automation and remote administration to allow the deployment of distributed clouds toward large areas. French local public administration and SME's start experimentation of the first nuage components.

OSGi Community Event 2017 Presentation by Harald Kornmaer [DHBW Mannheim] Building a worldwide IoT infrastructure requires a reliable basic runtime platform. Such a distributed computing system will consist of Cloud computing instances, sensor node, desktop computers and wearables. This talk explores how DHBW Mannheim, Germany have created the AQUASI research project (an Automated Quality Assurance Application Platform for SMEs in Handcraft Industries) and discusses the real world results and benefits that have been achieved from the exemplary use case of a german SME company, Rombach NUR-HOLZ which have been participating in the project. This applied research offers an Open Source framework to enable SME companies to build Industry 4.0 application to monitor and assure Quality Assurance across the full product lifecycle form production through the ongoing maintenance after purchase and installation. The AQUASI framework leaverages OSGi technology and Eclipse projects. Examples include Jetty, JAX-RS connectors with OSGI and Eclipse p2 and e4. . The project started with the development of an Industry 4.0 language using the AQUASI data and communication model to enable faster development of the SME applications. The talk will include an overview of the project architecture of the AQUASI system including the REST-based communication model that is used, along with UI components and future plans. Attendees will also get to understand some of the project challenges that have been faced and overcome.

At the departement of environment and spatial planning we started 2 projects. The first was to replace our vmware based hosting environment with an open, hardware-vendor neutral, hypervisor environment. The second project’s goal was to enable our dev-teams more. This is the story of the second project. What we built and how it works using opennebula and ceph and our existing tooling. At the time of writing of this abstract, our opennebula environment is used by 4 dev-teams (almost 30 developers) and an infra team, hosting 700 virtual servers and counting. We are executing 300 deploys (as part of the development cycle) per week and counting … I will be talking about the setup we realized, the choices we made and the deployment tool we ended up with, integrating the toolset we already used. This subset is enough for most infrastructure owners, and in exchange OpenNebula let’s you manage a cloud infrastructure without an army of system administrators. Because it is completely hypervisor agnostic, fully supports VMware, and is easy to install, maintain and use within existing VMware environments, OpenNebula is widely used as an open alternative to VMware vCloud at significantly lower costs. Hybrid functionality enables a private cloud administrator to outsource the cloud workload -read, the cloud VMs- to an external public cloud provider. OpenNebula approach to hybrid cloud is quite unique, in this talk we will explain how transparency for the user is achieved, and what tools OpenNebula gives to the administrator to build a fully functional hybrid cloud. Moreover, in this talk we will introduce the support for two new public cloud providers, available from OpenNebula 4.8. Before this release, integration with AWS was the default in OpenNebula, but now you can build clouds that expand to IBM SoftLayer and Microsoft Azure as well.

OpenNebula’s quest for simplicity touches every aspect of the software,and one of the greater effort has been put into the provisioning model. A smooth experience for users entails a proper design of the concepts, ironing out the flow of day to day operations, as well as proper tools for the administrators to manage its cloud. For this reason, OpenNebula features Virtual Datacenters (vDCs), which are containers for the execution of virtual machines, as well as a way of hiding physical resources from group members. Three actors are identified in this model: the cloud administrator, the vDC administrator and the end user. In this talk we will see how this vDCs are created, how physical resources are associated to them and administrators of the vDCs are managed and given permissions. All this topped with an excellent interface, the Cloud View, adapted for each of the actors.

Our team manages a SaaS platform for Business Intelligence and Analytics applications using a diverse set of middleware (mostly IBM). However the original setup of this platform was not done using a cloud architecture. In this talk we describe the reasons for selecting OpenNebula. The architecture of the new setup. The platform currently runs several solutions for Earth Sciences Researchers: Developer Cloud Sandboxes for scalable scientific processors integration, Virtual Archives federating distributed data repositories, Data Challenges for Earth Observation contests, and Digital Marketplaces for reproducible scientific experiments. OpenNebula is also powering our Cloud development environment, that has been enhanced during the past year. Terradue’s Cloud development environment is both our laboratory to test the latest developments from OpenNebula, especially for the integration of our own OpenNebula extensions, and our Engineering team facility to provision servers supporting project-based software developments. OpenNebula provides the virtualization and management of hardware clusters, that we rent from commercial ‘bare-metal’ providers. We have recently further developed several specific drivers for Multi-Cloud bursting, in order to provision virtual machines over public commercial clouds. When their processor integration and validation phase concludes, our researcher users can seamlessly burst their applications at scale, leveraging OpenNebula drivers for on-demand processing tasks.

CentOS, the Community Enterprise OS, uses Opennebula as virtualization plattform for its automated QA-process. The opennebula setup consists of 3 nodes, all running CentOS-6, who handle the following tasks: – sunstone as cloud controller – local mirror/DNS-Server/http-Server for the VMs to pull in packages – one VM to run a jenkins instance to launch the various tests (ci.de.centos.org) – nginx on the cloud controller to forward http traffic to the jenkins VM A public git repository (http://www.gitorious.org/testautomation) is used to allow whoever wants to contribute to pull the current test suite – t_functional, a series of bash scripts used to do funtional tests of various applications, binaries, configuration files and Trademark issues. As new tests are added to the repo via personal clones and merge requests, those tests first need to complete a test run via jenkins. Each test run currently consists of 4 VMs (one for each arch for C5 and C6 – C7 to come), which run the complete test suite. All VMs used for theses tests are instantiated and torn down on demand, whenever the call to testrun a personal clone is issued (via IRC). Once completed successfully, the request is merged into the main repo. The jenkins node monitors this repository and which automatically triggers another complete test run. Besides these triggered test runs, the test suite is automatically triggered daily to run. This is used to verify functionality of published updates – a handfull of failty updates have allready been discovered this way. Besides t_functional, the Linux Test Project Suite of tests is also run on a daily basis, also to verify functionality of the OS and all updates. The third setup is used to test the available and functional integrity of published docker images for CentOS. All these tests are later – during the QA-phase of a point release – used to verify functionality of new packages inside the CentOS QA-Setup.

Many facets of using an IaaS cloud like OpenNebula can be greatly simplified by using a configuration management tool such as Puppet. This includes the management of hosts as well as the management of cloud resources such as virtual machines and networks. Of course, Puppet can also play an important role in the management of the actual workload of virtual machine instances. Besides using it in the traditional, purely agent-based way, it is also possible to use Puppet during the building of machine images. This serves two purposes: firstly, it speeds up the initial Puppet run when an instance is launched off that image, sometimes quite dramatically. Secondly, it supports operating immutable infrastructure without losing Puppet’s benefits to organize and simplify the description of the entire infrastructure. This talk will show how Puppet can be used by adminsitrators to manage OpenNebula hosts, and by users to manage their infrastructure as well as how to use Puppet during image builds.

In this talk I will present an overview of what is disaster recovery, its main organizational and technical aspects and how we solved the problem of DR for many companies using a combination of OpenNebula, MooseFS and lots of duct tape. Going in detail, the presentation will show how to realistically estimate your recovery time objective (RTO) and the other essential parameters like RPO depending on your company structure and requirements; how to create a reliable, self-managing infrastructure using OpenNebuia and the MooseFS/LizardFS distributed filesystems, how to efficiently perform geographic disaster recovery (including differential and deduplicating snapshots) and the additions and changes we made to OpenNebula to help in performing remote management and support. Some specific real-life disasters will be examined, along with some hardware tools designed to help – like the portable cloud or the bomb-proof server rack.

You will see how to combine OpenNebula with bare-metal deployment on standard server hardware using non-shared storage in an environment without physical access to the hardware and no existing base infrastructure like DNS, NTP, DHCP, VPN or other. The infrastructure installation has been done automatically using public code and free Open Source software.
