5. 10 Ways Applying to NCDOT is Different
1. Real jobs that need to be filled.
2. NCDOT cannot source resumes and hire directly.
You must apply.
3. Jobs are posted for as little as 5 days.
You MUST apply by the closing date, or it’s too late.
4. Focusing on your Application is critical!
5. Screening Questions are VERY important.
6. Veterans get preference.
7. Interviews use structured questions to ensure fairness.
8. Sometimes persistence wins.
9. Fewer applicants than private sector.
10. Job descriptions, not job advertisements.
7. NC DOT Job Search
• Sort Jobs by Posting Date, Salary, Title
• Filter Jobs by Location, Category, Salary
• No account needed to search jobs
• Account needed to apply for jobs
8. • Search Results Allow You to:
• Constrain results further by:
• Keywords
• Location/Zip Code Radius
• Browse Deeper by:
• City
• Agency
• Job Category
• Salary
• Job Type (FT/PT)
• Sort by Salary
• Sort by Closing Date
• Sort by Location
12. Include keywords and phrases in your
application.
Provide technical assistance = “provided
technical assistance” not “delivered
computer support”
Participate in quality control methods
translated on an application to:
“participated in improving quality control
methods by conducting customer surveys
resulting in increased customer success.”
Tip: Highlight All Keywords
13. Make Your Experience Count
• Most NCDMV positions do NOT require you to have a degree. If you do not meet the degree requirements for the job, your experience may serve
as a substitution.
• The “Minimum Education and Experience Requirements” at the bottom of each job posting will indicate the amount of RELEVANT experience
needed to qualify.
Example
• In the above job posting, if you do not have a High School Diploma/GED, but you do have at least two years of relevant experience you may
minimally qualify.
• For your experience to be considered, you MUST document in your application how it is related to the position.
14. 4 Tips to a Better Application
1. Each job you apply to may contain different minimum education and experience requirements. Modify each application you submit to fit
the requirements of each position to which you apply.
2. Enter each job you have held separately.
Do not combine your jobs into one section of the work history.
3. The start and end dates you list for your positions are extremely important.
Make sure you have a beginning and ending date for each position you have held.
4. Make sure information in the Knowledge, Skills and Abilities section of the job posting appears in your work history.
You will not be interviewed if this information is missing from your application.
15. You Must Create an Account and Accept the Terms & Conditions to
Apply to Jobs

29. 7 Tips regarding KSAs and Questions
1. Did you address each posted KSA in your job duties on your application?
2. Use keywords & phrases exactly as they appear in job posting & questions
3. Can the hiring manager see my key credentials in 15 seconds?
4. Do I prominently summarize “why me” at the top of my application
5. Be Direct: Directly address each question
e.g., if an advanced degree is required make sure the complete details of the degree are listed on your
application. If the question asks about writing ability, immediately detail experience instead of your enjoyment of
writing.
6. Think Metrics: Highlight quantitative ways your work has had a measurable impact, how you’ve helped a
company save/make money, improve performance, and matter.
7. Think Efficiency: Highlight how you can save time, make time or manage time, and key ways that you have
improved efficiency.
35. What Happens After You Apply?
1. When the posting closes, the NCDOT team screens all applicants.
2. If you submitted more than one application for a single posting, we ONLY review the most recent application you submitted.
3. You will be notified by email with status updates on your application.
4. Typical Responses are:
– Application Received
– Meet Minimum Qualifications
– Most Qualified
– Referred to Hiring Team
– We’d Like to Schedule an Interview
– Failed to Meet Minimum Requirements
– Meet Requirements but not Among Most Qualified
5. Be Patient.
Often you won’t hear get a final status update until someone accepts the position
6. Keep applying!
There is no penalty for applying to every job for which you are interested/eligible.
Hinweis der Redaktion
For job seekers it provides a single location for you to search, apply, and check the status of your applications.
It has great job search functionality. You can easily create job search agents to be notified as soon as jobs that match what you want appear on the site. It has a streamlined resume builder. When you apply to a job, you can check the status of all your applications, and it has a deep information center to answer questions and provide information that will help you understand the Federal hiring processes, rules, and help you succeed with your applications.
You can search for jobs as easy as going to www.usajobs.gov. Here you can enter what you’re looking for and a location. The location can be a city, state, or zip code, and the keywords can be anything from a skill, occupation, or other area.
These KSAs frustrate a lot of job seekers. Here’s some tips on how to respond to them.
Use keywords and phrases exactly as they appear in the job posting and screening questions. Remember Federal application evaluation has different rules than the private sector, so the more you make it easy for the recruiter, the more you can score points.
Recruiters don’t read responses, they scan them, so make sure sure that your key credentials appear within 15 seconds of reading. Your critical information should jump off the page.
Directly address each question.
Think metrics. It will make you stand out.
Think efficiency. How did you help a company to do a better job. Again, it will make you stand out.
