Week 1: starting...
Nível 5 - TOEFL
If you’re taking this course, it means you’re preparing to take the TOEFL exam. As the
exam is divided in four parts, the course will follow the same division.
Besides studying for each of the papers (Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening
and Speaking), you’ll also read 6 books. The course also contains some pronunciation
and fluency practices that are divided throughout the weeks.
In this first week, let’s concentrate on Reading. First of all, take the diagnostic exam,
called Pre-test. Your grade might not be as good as you’d like it to be, don’t worry. It’s
a diagnostic exam. After studying the skill for a few weeks, you’ll take another exam
and this time, your grade will be higher.

bank, cheese and dog.
Finish the week reading the introduction for the book Para-life Rescue!
We wish you a nice week 

Nível 5 - TOEFL
From now on, let’s divide our week in 6 days, and take one day off to relax. Besides
the activities separated to be studied on the first day, take part of your time to review
what was studied in the previous week.
Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.1 / Activity 1
This activity will help you identify valid inferences based on sentences or short
passages. There are 15 short passages in which you will have to choose the correct
statement that shows a valid inference. Inference questions are the ones which ask
you about information or an idea that is not explicitly mentioned in the text. The first
step is to identify the key words in the question. Then, use these key words or
paraphrases to locate the relevant section.
Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.2 / Activity 1
This activity follows the same principles from the previous activity. The difference is
that this time, instead of having sentences, you’ll deal with a longer passage and 8
inference questions for this same passage. Another highlight is that you will be timed.
But in case you don’t feel comfortable with this, you can just hide time.

Pronunciation / The / Activities 1, 2 and 3. You will find these activities in a subfolder
called Pronunciation inside the folder Speaking. The activities deal with the sound of
the letters TH. You can listen to the model speaker before recording your voice. Your
pronunciation will be rated in one of these three levels: GOOD, CLOSE, NEEDS
IMPROVEMENT. It’s worth practicing isolated sounds in words so that your
pronunciation will improve when speaking words with these sounds in a context. For
sure, you’ll sound more natural. Besides, you will find it easier to understand spoken
English.
Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.2 / Activities 2, 3 and 4. There are three
texts – one in each activity. Each text comes with 8 inference questions. You are
supposed to spend the maximum of 20 minutes to read the text and answer each of
the 8 inference questions.

Reading / Purpose, Method and Opinion Questions / Lesson 4.1 / Activity 1. In a
really simple way, if you ask me a question using WHY you want to know the purpose
of something. For example: A: I ended up calling him last night. / B: Why did you do
this? Haven’t you been hurt enough? If the question is with HOW, then you want to
know the method used to do something. For example: A: Grace has just been to Italy.
/ B: How did she travel? I heard she was broke! / A: Yes, but her parents gave her this
present. Finally, if you want to know someone’s opinion, you ask a question with
WHAT. For example: A: Last night I went to the movies and saw this new film. / B: Oh
really? I want to go next weekend with my boyfriend. What did you think of it?
Reading / Purpose, Method and Opinion Questions / Lesson 4.1 / Activities 2, 3, 4
and 5. Each of these activities contains a passage and 5 true / false questions.

Nível 5 - TOEFL If you’re taking this course, it means you’re preparing to take the TOEFL exam. As the exam is divided in four parts, the course will follow the same division. Besides studying for each of the papers (Reading, Writing, Use of English, Listening and Speaking), you’ll also read 6 books. The course also contains some pronunciation and fluency practices that are divided throughout the weeks. In this first week, let’s concentrate on Reading. First of all, take the diagnostic exam, called Pre-test. Your grade might not be as good as you’d like it to be, don’t worry. It’s a diagnostic exam. After studying the skill for a few weeks, you’ll take another exam and this time, your grade will be higher.

Nível 5 - TOEFL From now on, let’s divide our week in 6 days, and take one day off to relax. Besides the activities separated to be studied on the first day, take part of your time to review what was studied in the previous week. Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.1 / Activity 1 This activity will help you identify valid inferences based on sentences or short passages. There are 15 short passages in which you will have to choose the correct statement that shows a valid inference. Inference questions are the ones which ask you about information or an idea that is not explicitly mentioned in the text. The first step is to identify the key words in the question. Then, use these key words or paraphrases to locate the relevant section. Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.2 / Activity 1 This activity follows the same principles from the previous activity. The difference is that this time, instead of having sentences, you’ll deal with a longer passage and 8 inference questions for this same passage. Another highlight is that you will be timed. But in case you don’t feel comfortable with this, you can just hide time.

Besides, you will find it easier to understand spoken English. Reading / Inference Questions / Lesson 3.2 / Activities 2, 3 and 4. There are three texts – one in each activity.
