Globalisation
2. “Globalization in its current phase has been described as an
unprecedented compression of time and space reflected in the
tremendous intensification of social, political, economic, and cultural
interconnections and interdependencies on a global scale.” (Stegler)
Globalization
It is the process of international integration arising from the
interchange of world views, products, ideas, and other aspects of
culture.
“stretching” of social relations across the globe
world becomes “smaller”
world is experienced as “one place”
3. Causes:
• The development of communication
technologies such as internet, email and
mobile phones have been vital to the growth
of globalisation because they help MNCs to
operate throughout the world.
• The development of satellite TV channels
such as Sky and CNN have also provided
worldwide marketing avenues for the
concept and products of globalisation.
4. 2. The Growth of MNCs
• Globalisation allows MNCs to produce
goods and services and to sell products on a
massive scale throughout the world.
5. 3. Global Banking
• Modern communication technologies
allow vast amounts of capital to flow
freely and instantly throughout the
world.
6. 4. Free Trade Agreements
• MNCs and rich capitalist countries have always promoted global free trade
as a way of increasing their own wealth and influence.
7. Advantages
Reduction of cultural barriers increases the
global village effect
Reduction of likelihood of war between
developed nations
Spread of democratic ideals to developed
nations
8. Disadvantages
Increased flow of skilled and non-skilled jobs from
developed to developing nations as corporations seek out
the cheapest labor.
Increased likelihood of economic disruptions in one nation
effecting all nations.
Corporate influence of nation-states far exceeds that of
civil society organizations and average individuals
10. Increased competition among nations
• Countries also want to attract talented people to work in
their country.
Brain Drain: highly skilled people migrating to other
countries
11. Increased awareness of foreign culture
• People become more aware of different cultures
[through travelling, through internet, movies etc]
12. Environmental impact
• TNCs use natural resources at a rapid rate
and care only about profits and not
environmental protection
13. Widening income gap between the rich and the
poor
• Developed countries draw away TNCs, investments, skilled
people and resources away from poor areas.
• Developing countries are unable to produce better quality
goods and higher priced goods.
• Developing countries also face trade restrictions from the
developed countries.
