• A long time before the Internet
became the Web, Paul Otlet and
Henri la Fontaine, two Belgians,
began in 1895 to compile links to
books, newspaper and magazine
articles, pictures and other
documents from libraries and
archives around the world. Those
interested could submit queries by
mail or telegraph.
• The project became the Universal
Bibliographic Repertory and would
lead to a system libraries would
use until nowadays. It would later
become the Mundaneum.
