What is Universal Design?
 Universal Design is a way of structuring
something so that everyone can use it to their
fullest potential.
 For example, having handicapped accessible
entrances is universal design, as it allows
everyone access to a building.

Learning?
 Universal Design is used in learning to allow
every student to learn to their fullest potential,
despite disabilities, second-language learning,
or different learning styles.

Principles of Universal Design in
Learning
 Provide multiple means of representation
 Provide multiple means of action and
expression
 Provide multiple means of engagement

Multiple Representations
 Represent concepts in multiple ways, beyond
just words or text.
For example, in math, use word problems
and physical objects that learners can
manipulate

Multiple Means of Action and
Expression
 Provide students with a number of ways to
express what they learn.
For example, give them a written option,
drawn option, spoken option, for a particular
homework assignment.

Multiple Means of Engagement
 Use multiple ways of instruction, to get
students interested in and motivated to learn.
