MUSCLES
and
SKIN
* A muscle is an organ that can relax, contract,
and provide force to move bones and body parts.
• Voluntary muscles are muscles that YOU control

• Involuntary muscles are muscles you cannot
control.
– The muscles in the heart and internal organs
are involuntary muscles
• Skeletal muscles are muscles that move bones
• Tendons are thick bands of tissue that attach
bones to muscles
• Cardiac muscle is muscle found only in the heart
* On average, the cardiac muscle contracts
70 times per minute every day of your life.
• Smooth muscle is involuntary muscle that
controls movements of internal organs
• Skin is the thin layer of tissue which forms the
outer covering of the body
=> The skin is the largest organ of the body.
• Skin is made up of three layers of tissue –
dermis, epidermis, and a fatty layer called the
hypodermis
• The epidermis is the outermost, thinnest layer
of skin.
• The dermis is the layer of cells directly under the
epidermis
The dermis is a thick
layer and it contains
blood vessels,
nerves, muscles,
oil glands
and sweat glands
• Below the dermis is a fatty layer called the
hypodermis

The hypodermis is made up of fat and
connective tissue which is responsible
for binding skin to the tissue beneath it.
• Melanin is a pigment
that protects skin and
gives it color

- melanin is produced
by cells in the epidermis
• Functions of the skin:
=> protection
=> sensory response (touch)
=> formation of vitamin D (from sunlight)
=> regulation of body temperature (sweat)
=> ridding the body of waste (also sweat)
