2018/19
They got talented writers based in the North of England. This group is made up of 10
writers and they were halfway through a 12-month development programme. The
writers were identified through BBC writers room schemes and open submission
opportunities, talent scouting and by recommendation though partnerships with new
writing groups and theatres in the North of England. Over the course of a year, they
work with the ten writers, and they will participate in workshops and training on
writing for radio, television, film and digital platforms. Monthly sessions are led by
industry professionals from across the broadcast landscape. They also get involved in a
mix of masterclasses, practical writing and pitching workshops. They also have network
opportunities and the chance to discuss and share work. They also work on spec'
scripts and receive scripts - editing support.
Some members of the group have already had short drama scripts. These scripts have
been developed and produced to be broadcast on BBC Radio 3's. The verb has been a
part of a joint initiative with BBC writer's room.
The participators in 2018/19 have successfully received BBC credits, agent representation
and industry mentorship. The Northern development programme has a track record of
identifying stand - out writers including "Tony Schumacher" who has recently been
commissioned by BBC Two. Tony had been asked to write an episode of Noughts and
Crosses which has been his first writing for a television series.
2020
In 2020 they announced another BBC writers'
room Northern Voices. This time there were 17
exceptional writers, and these writers still go onto
a yearlong development programme, with expert
masterclasses, pitching opportunities and
introductions to an industry for new and exciting
talent. As the same in 2018/19 they also have to
deliver an original TV spec' script, they have
support from BBC writers' room North team and
experienced script editor. The writers have all
been picked in the same ways as the years before
which means that they don't change their
recruitment process as they already have a
successful recruitment process.
2022
They had announced the 69 talented writers from across the UK.
These are the most they have announced throughout the
previous years. Out of the 69 writers then had picked 14 of
them had been working across Northern England over the
past few months. They got to know the talented group of
writers and helping them develop TV treatments that
showcase their authentic and original voice. The voice
programme allowed the 14 writers to develop their craft and
allowing them time, support and creative space to work on
their ideas.
Throughout the years they have kept some similarities such as
recruitment process, the different workshops they go on
through the 12 months. Also, on their articles they have told
you information about all of the different writers. This
information is either what they did before writing, awards
they have gotten and what they are doing since Northern
Voices.
