April-2013 to Date Department of Industry and Science [Canberra]
www.industry.gov.au
Technical team leader, Business Intelligence and Reporting team
I joined the Department in April 2013 as a Senior Business Intelligence Developer and was quickly
promoted to the role of Technical team leader. I am leading the team of about 10 people since then. I am
currently working on a BI project to develop a new Enterprise Data Warehouse. I take active part in all
phases of the Software Development life cycle including the requirements gathering, design and
development, testing, implementation and user training. I am also responsible for the training and
mentoring of the junior team members.
Following are few among many projects that I worked on:
1. “Lighthouse” Enterprise Data Warehouse:
Every day, the Department produces enormous amounts of data in various formats ranging from
plain text files and Excel spreadsheets to the highly sophisticated Oracle/SQL Server databases
and SharePoint Lists. This data is spread all over the place in the form of various isolated silos.
Back in 2012, the Department decided to create a central platform which will serve as a single
source of information across the department and will be available to all users department wide.
Initially, we started the development with three main subject areas ‘Projects’, ‘Businesses’ and
‘Finance’. Subsequently, as we are progressing, we are adding more subject areas.
Tools and technologies used to build Lighthouse include Microsoft SQL Server 2012, SSAS, SSIS,
PowerPivot, PowerView and Microsoft SharePoint 2010, MS Visual Studio 2010, MS Team
Foundation Server 2010.
I am leading the development team. I have designed, developed and standardised the various
SQL Server databases, SSIS ETL packages, SSAS cubes, Tabular and PowerPivot Models. I am
working with the large volume databases and have built skills overtime to address and fix
performance issues. I have deep understanding of SQL Server Query plans and the role of
database indexes and stats in the query optimiser. I am expert in using the monitoring tools
such as ‘SQL Server Profiler’ and ‘Database Engine Tuning Advisor’ to find the performance
bottlenecks. When needed, I also help the Project Manager with the task estimation, task
allocation, release planning and release review.
In recognition of the high quality product, our team has been awarded with “Exceptional
Performance Award”.

2. Operational Data Stores / Data Discovery:
I have also designed and developed various operational data stores for the specific operational
reporting needs. These operational data stores are implemented as separate databases. These
databases hold the detailed transaction data specific to individual teams/sections of the
department. At the moment, the Data Warehouse and the Operational Data Stores (ODSs) share
the same infrastructure and landing databases. But the solution is completely scalable and, if
needed, can be scaled across many servers in the future.
I have also designed and built various Data Discovery databases. I have standardised the process
to create these databases. The aim of these databases is to give users the ability to explore the
data which they are interested in. Sometimes, if deemed valuable, data from these databases is
moved to an ODS or Data Warehouse. These databases are created when data discovery is not
feasible using standalone tools such as PowerBI, Tableau.
3. Improvements in the internally maintained Australian Business Register:
The department runs various Government funded aid and grant programs ranging from few
hundred dollars to the millions of dollars. For these programs, the Department receives
applications from individuals and firms and then cross checks this data with the ABR database.
This database is maintained internally by the Department.
I have designed and written the ETL process to update this data on a regular basis. Department
receives the data from ABR on a weekly basis. This data is then fed into the ETL process and then
transformed and loaded into our internal ABR database. This database is consumed by SSAS
cubes and SSRS reports.
4. Address Geocoding:
There was a requirement to geocode the addresses for geospatial reports. I was tasked to write
an ETL routine to geocode the Australian addresses that exist in our transactional systems (as
well as external data sets, such as ABR). We chose the “Pitney Bowes” Spectrum geocoding
engine for this purpose. We also map the longitude and latitude of these addresses onto the
various different statistical layers such as Australian Electorates, Remoteness, LGAs, SA3s, SA4s
etc. This is proven to be a great tool for business users as they no longer need to go on to AEC or
ABS websites to do this mapping manually. This tool has also the capability to do ad-hoc
geocoding.
Jan-2010 to April 2013 Australian Electoral Commission [Canberra]
Business Intelligence Developer
I worked with Australian Electoral Commission from January, 2010 to April 2013. I worked in the Business
Intelligence team. The major projects that I worked on are as follows:
1. Project to replace an old third party BI system (called SuperStar, developed by Space Time
Research) with a new system based on Microsoft BI stack (i.e. SQL Server Analysis Services,
Integration Services, and Reporting Services). I designed and developed the new Analysis
Services Databases and wrote automated procedures and scripts to automatically migrate
the historic data from the old system into the new system. I also wrote scripts to migrate
the old ETL processes (DTS Packages) to the new SQL Server Integration Services (SSIS)
packages.

2. Election Dashboard: Election Dashboard is used by National Election Management Team
(NEMT) during the election period to monitor various important activities and to make sure
that things are going well and they are on track. This new Dash Board was built using SQL
Server 2008, SharePoint 2010 and Performance Point. I developed the SSIS Packages, SSAS
cubes, KPIs, SharePoint lists, Score cards etc.
3. I was also responsible to maintain the existing SSAS Databases and develop the new ones.
Enrolment Activity is the most important and most complex among others. AEC has about
80 million records in this database. I designed and developed this database. This database is
updated and processed on nightly basis.
4. I also designed and developed the fully automated ETL processes for the Data Warehouse.
These processes are triggered automatically which means that no manual intervention is
required. Any new update triggers the relevant load routine resulting in the automatic
update of the Data Warehouse.
5. I took part in the SharePoint implementation and have developed the SharePoint Branding
solution.
Nov-2007 to Dec 2009 Livestock Exchange Pty Ltd. [Brisbane]
Software Developer
Livestock Exchange is a major software provider for Livestock Industry with more than 80% of market
share. During my stay at Livestock Exchange I took part in the development of following state of the
art applications.
1. Market Place – A distributed WPF (Window Presentation Foundation) application which is being
used by many cattle and sheep sale yards around the country to sell, scan, weigh and then finally
draft the animals into the pens that are pre-allocated to their respective buyers. All this happens
automatically without any direct human interaction. .NET Remoting has been used as
Communication Bridge among multiple PCs.
2. Egyptian Live Import – Australian Government banned the live animal export to Egypt in late
2006 due to animal welfare issues. This application has been developed to be used in Registered
and Approved feedlots and slaughterhouses in Egypt. The release of this application is the first
step towards resuming the live animal export to Egypt, but this export will be limited to the
registered feedlots and abattoirs only.
3. Sale Clerking – A WPF based small and smart mobile application that is being used on Tablet PCs.
This application enables Sale Agents to enter sale details on the fly during animal auction. This
application uses DSA (Disconnected Service Agent) and web services to synchronize data among
tablet PCs and Server over a wired or wireless connection in an occasionally connected mode.
Feb -2004 to Nov -2005 Naveena Enterprises [Lahore]
Software Developer
At Naveena Enterprises, I took part in the Development of a brand new Information Management
System to meet the changing needs of the organization. This new system replaced the old system
which was developed in Microsoft Visual Basic 6.0

Software Developer
During my stay at DigitalN, I worked on the following projects.
1. Developed an IT System for a group of Schools. It was developed in Visual Basic .Net.
2. Developed a utility able to import/export data among various non-relational databases like
Excel, XML, DBF and text files.
3. Developed an IT system for a Clinic/Laboratory using Visual Basic 6.0.
4. Developed an IT system for a chain of fuel stations using Visual Basic 6.0.
