Media Proposal Jabir Zaman
1. MAGAZINE PROPOSAL FOR
FOPE (FANATICS OF POP
AND ELECTRONIC)
Mohamed Jabir Zaman, S1600118, AS MEDIA STUDIES
2. INTRODUCTION
HELLO EVERYBODY!
My name is Jabir Zaman and I am going to propose my idea for a music magazine.
The name of my magazine is EPF which stands for "Electronic and Pop Fanatics". I chose this name because: of its shortness
and simplicity, how it corresponds to the genre of magazine and how it will make it easy for the audience to decode the main
genre(s) of this magazine. Furthermore the word 'Fanatic' means someone who has a lot of interest in, which implies that this
magazine is essentially for those who are die-hard fans of Pop and Electronic music.
EPF is a music magazine that features : Q and A interviews with popular music artists like Charlie Puth, Shawn Mendes, Halsey,
Hailee Steinfield. It will also include tips on improving your singing and musical skills, quizzes, how electronic music has
evolved, chart reviews for both genres, top 10's etc.
3. GENRE
• I chose Pop because it is my favorite genre and it is arguably the largest genre in music and I chose
to mix it with Electronic because I feel they both have a fantastic synergy due to the emotions they
evoke and the rhythms they produce.
4. WHAT THE LAYOUT WILL BE LIKE FOR
THE COVER
The Masthead of the magazine will be either in the top left or be centered at the top of magazine going across and in big
bold lettering to stand out. I used Q magazine as inspiration for this.
It will be partially covered by the cover star, this is because I took inspiration from the Vibe Magazine of Usher (that I
researched on for the case studies for task 2) and I want to insinuate to the audience the significance of the cover star
through these connotations of power and dominance. I will also include anchorage so the audience can easily decode the
cover star.
The angle for the cover star’s shot will be taken at eye level (which is the conventional angle) with a direct gaze in order to
create this feeling of intimacy between the star and the reader/audience. It is also as if this gaze is implying "buy me!"
The type of shot for my magazine will be a close-up or medium close-up in order to further evoke a sense of intimacy and
for a direct mode of address.
I will conform to the conventions of a magazine by including a date line that will be located in the top right of the
magazine, a barcode which will be placed in the bottom of left and 2 columns of cover lines one column one the left and
the other on the right. It will be done in this way to give the magazine cover a neat, simplistic and professional look to the
audience. I will also include a puff to make the magazine stand out and it will be more likely to attract the audience's
attention.
5. COLOR SCHEME, FONTS AND SOCIAL MEDIA LINKS.
The colour scheme will challenge the conventional 3 colour scheme rule as I will use 5 colours instead. These are: White,
Yellow, Light Blue, Red and Pink. These colours all essentially give off a positive vibe and an energetic vibe. The use of these
colours will make the magazine more appealing to look at for the audience instead of looking dull.
However, these are subject to change and I may instead revert back to the conforming 3 colour scheme/use alternate
colours if I feel the use of 5 colours will make my magazine messy and untidy. However, Top of the Pops and We Love Pops
magazines also challenges the conventional 3 colour scheme so it is not something completely rare.
The type of font I will use for my mastheads, titles , subtitles and the puff will be 'Arial Black' due to it being a sans-serif
style of font, which means it is simple and easy to decode for the audience. I will use 'Arial' for the cover lines and puffs.
Social media links (such as Facebook and Twitter) will be present on the cover of the magazine in order to establish a strong
connection with the target audience and keep in touch with them easily. It will also increase popularity and help the
distribution of the content as everyone would be sharing it. I took this idea from the Q Magazine that I researched for the
case studies in task 2.
6. TARGET AUDIENCE AND PUBLISHER
Due to the simplicity of the lettering/font and the bright colors, my magazine is targeted at teenagers and young people.
The typical age ranges would be around 10-12 and 16-27 year old people. The magazine is not gender specific, it is aimed at both
genders and includes content that is appropriate for both sexes.
I believe that mixing both Pop and the electronic music genres would prove beneficial as there are not many magazines that do
this which makes this the unique selling point of the magazine. Furthermore, it can help enable the magazine to attract a wider
audience and the two genres complement each other well (this is reinforced by the existence of the electro-pop sub genre).
The publisher I chose is EMAP (now known as Ascential) as they currently do not have any music magazines that they publish so
choosing them would prove beneficial as it will increase their popularity by attracting a wider audience and generate more
income for them.
7. WHAT MAKES MY MAGAZINE DIFFERENT TO POPULAR
MAGAZINES LIKE Q?
It combines electronic music and pop music together and focuses solely on them.
It challenges the 3 color scheme convention as I use 5 colors.
It gives the audience a bit of education on music and technology and how they both complement each other and evolved
together to bring us the pop and electronic music we have today while providing a bit of humor. This is so they do not stray away
from the purpose of the magazine which is to educate people on the subject of Pop and Electronic Music.
There are not too many random advertisements for the reason I stated before.
It includes music related activities such as word searches and quizzes for the teens and younger people.
Due to the magazine being targeted at a younger audience, the price for one issue could as cost as less as £3.00 compared to Q
magazine which costs £3.90 - £4 per issue.
8. CONCLUSION AND ANY FURTHER QUESTIONS
Thank you for listening, you may ask me any questions you
have about the magazine.
