Android O – Everything Developers Must Know About the Upcoming OS

  1. 1. Android O – Everything Developers Must Know About the Upcoming OS You might have already heard of Android Nougat, but are you aware that Google is all set to launch another release codenamed Android ‘O’? The first developer preview came out on March 17, 2017, with the final release ready to unfurl in the third quarter of this year. It promises to be an advanced version of Nougat and includes a range of features that has kindled excitement in Android developers across the world. Here’s a look at a few: Picture-in-Picture: We’ve seen this feature on TV for years that allows us to see what’s on another channel without switching from the current channel. With ‘O,' Google now brings this feature to its Android devices and provides complete support for pip modes. Optimized Notifications Ever unlocked your phone only to find it cramped with notifications? The new version makes lives simpler by allowing users to group notifications by type. You can group all the messaging apps under one category and news app in another. This will minimize the clutter. WiFi Aware One of the most prominent features of this Operating System is WiFi Aware, also known as Neighbor Awareness Networking (NAN) that allows compatible devices in proximity to connect with each other without an internet connection. Adaptive Icons The new version introduces adaptive icons which can alter their look across different device models. For instance, the FaceBook app icon may have a square shape on Pixel while being a squircle on Samsung. Each device can provide a mask for icons, to render all icons on the particular device in the same form, making the task of customization easier for OEMs. Standby Battery-Saver Believe it or not, ‘O’ might just be able to fix standby battery drain concerns by limiting the actions apps can perform in the background. The update has tightened its reins on apps that drain out batteries significantly by applying several restrictions on background services, location updates and more.
  2. 2. High-end Bluetooth Codecs When compared to wired headphones, Bluetooth has always been on the receiving end owing to its poor audio quality. Fortunately, Google has added several hi-fi Bluetooth codecs to Android ‘O’ such as Sony’s LDAC that is bound to improve the overall audio quality. While the above is by no means an extensive list of the full features of Android ‘O’, it should give you an idea of what the Android upgrade has in store for users. We’ll have to wait for the official release to fully explore what the new OS has on offer.
