Making Connections
E-Networking: How to Develop a Network through Social Media
By: Martha Toebben
A big reason that counselors join organizations such as the Missouri Career
Development Association is to network with individuals in the career
development profession. There is great value in making these connections to
learn about new initiatives, challenges others are experiencing and just
gaining support from folks who are doing the same kind of work. While face-
to-face interactions are ideal, sometimes it can be challenging due to finding
the time to be away from work or the sheer proximity of our location within
the state.
There are ways we can connect that may not involve actually meeting with
someone in person. These include:
1) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3671542. Join this group
to read career related articles, obtain information about upcoming events and
learn about career counseling job openings. Feel free to post information
that others in the group may find helpful.
2) Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/MissouriCareerDevelopmentAssociation/. Connect
on Facebook to keep informed about career conferences and events
throughout the state and on the national level (NCDA).
3) Twitter: https://twitter.com/mo_cda. Another way to stay connected
with your fellow MoCDA members.
4) WebEx: MoCDA hosts several webinars each year using WebEx which
allows MoCDA members across the state to participate.
Whatever your preferred method of online communication, MoCDA has
options for you to stay connected.

August Roundtable
Conference Sharing & Making Connections
Our first roundtable of the 2016-17 year was a great
success! The group of about 12 people met at Stephens
College in Columbia, Missouri to share best practices. Meg
Langland, of Westminster College shared best practices on
using vision boards with clients. The takeaway here was to
have images precut out of magazines and categorized for ease
of use and that Vision Boards are a way to create a career,
personal or combination set of goals and really makes
students engage and think about their overall focus in life
(health, family, career, education, etc.). This was based on a
recent workshop she had led at a conference.
The other topic of interest was how different campuses
accomplish professional development competencies among
their students. Amanda Wooden shared her College to Career
program of competencies for Stephens women to meet before graduating. We also toured
the Stephens College Career Center including their suit closet, a lending library of suits and
professional attire for current students.
The Career Center also has several interview
rooms for video interviews which also featured a
computer monitor on the wall behind the student
to use as a tool to showcase a visual portfolio
during an interview. Each room had an alumni
sponsor with their biography on the wall. Lastly,
Ivy Hutchison, shared best practices of
inventories used at the secondary level as well
as ideas for career professionals to get into high
school classrooms to help with post-high school
success. This is slice of the information that was shared among new and seasoned
professionals! Roundtables are a great way to network and to gain knowledge.
Sondra Stuart, a new
MoCDA member had
this to say, "The
Roundtable was
excellent! As a new
employee it is good to
get out and network
with other and get to
know professionals
that work on some of
the same materials as
I will be working
with."
Fall Webinar Event
NCDA Credentialing Initiative Webinar
To serve our members, MoCDA creates many opportunities throughout the year for
professional development through our conferences, workshops, roundtable discussions, and
other events. As part of our efforts to connect our members with timely resources, on
Friday, September 23, 2016 we offered a webinar event on the new NCDA credentialing
initiative.
During this webinar, 19 MoCDA members learned about how NCDA is defining quality in the
career services profession. NCDA is planning to provide a series of career services
credentials so that each role in the field is clearly defined. NCDA plans to revise the
credentialing structure and provide the following certifications:
• Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP)TM
• Certified Clinical Supervisor of Career Counseling (CCSCC)TM
• Certified Career Counselor (CCC)TM
• Certified Master of Career Services (CMCS)TM
• Certified Career Counselor Educator (CCCE)TM
Members were provided details regarding what steps are being taken to solidify these
credentials and what NCDA will be doing in the upcoming year to bring these to fruition.
Marilyn Maze, current NCDA Treasurer and Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Career
Development Association provided a detailed description of these credentials and answered
questions regarding the new credentialing structure.
Kay-lynne Taylor, Director, Career Development Center at Missouri Western
State University had this to say, “The webinar last Friday provided really great
information. Thank you so much!”
Continue to check your email for information about upcoming webinars and other MoCDA
events.
November is Career Development Month
MoCDA Members Help Promote Career Awareness in November
November is career awareness month. As a way to celebrate and promote awareness the
National Career Development Association (NCDA) sponsors the poetry and poster contest.
This year’s theme is The Joy of Working: Positive Approaches to Work, Career and Life. (for
more information: http://www.ncda.org/aws/NCDA/pt/sp/ncdmonth)
The contest provides a great opportunity for students to express themselves and explore
their interests, skills, abilities and overall career interests. This is where you come in. Do you
know a student who would be interested in participating in the contest? Are you connected
with a school, where you can pass the information on to art or language communications
teacher?
This is a great way to get involved as a member, if you have limited time.
If you are interested contact:
Catherine Nkonge
Membership Committee Chair
nkongek@hazinacs.com
Hopefully you were able to celebrate with these Career Awareness events:

The Missouri Association of College Admission Counselors (MOACAC) is comprised of college
and high school professionals that would benefit from your career counseling expertise.
You are encouraged to submit a proposal to present at their conference April 3-5, 2017 at

Some topics of interest to this population:

help our students?

E-Networking Tips for Career Counselors

  • 1. MoCDA Newsletter Fall 2016 Making Connections E-Networking: How to Develop a Network through Social Media By: Martha Toebben A big reason that counselors join organizations such as the Missouri Career Development Association is to network with individuals in the career development profession. There is great value in making these connections to learn about new initiatives, challenges others are experiencing and just gaining support from folks who are doing the same kind of work. While face- to-face interactions are ideal, sometimes it can be challenging due to finding the time to be away from work or the sheer proximity of our location within the state. There are ways we can connect that may not involve actually meeting with someone in person. These include: 1) LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/groups/3671542. Join this group to read career related articles, obtain information about upcoming events and learn about career counseling job openings. Feel free to post information that others in the group may find helpful. 2) Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/MissouriCareerDevelopmentAssociation/. Connect on Facebook to keep informed about career conferences and events throughout the state and on the national level (NCDA). 3) Twitter: https://twitter.com/mo_cda. Another way to stay connected with your fellow MoCDA members. 4) WebEx: MoCDA hosts several webinars each year using WebEx which allows MoCDA members across the state to participate. Whatever your preferred method of online communication, MoCDA has options for you to stay connected. • 2. Our first roundtable of the 2016-17 year was a great success! The group of about 12 people met at Stephens College in Columbia, Missouri to share best practices. Meg Langland, of Westminster College shared best practices on using vision boards with clients. The takeaway here was to have images precut out of magazines and categorized for ease of use and that Vision Boards are a way to create a career, personal or combination set of goals and really makes students engage and think about their overall focus in life (health, family, career, education, etc.). This was based on a recent workshop she had led at a conference. The other topic of interest was how different campuses accomplish professional development competencies among their students. Amanda Wooden shared her College to Career program of competencies for Stephens women to meet before graduating. We also toured the Stephens College Career Center including their suit closet, a lending library of suits and professional attire for current students. The Career Center also has several interview rooms for video interviews which also featured a computer monitor on the wall behind the student to use as a tool to showcase a visual portfolio during an interview. Each room had an alumni sponsor with their biography on the wall. Lastly, Ivy Hutchison, shared best practices of inventories used at the secondary level as well as ideas for career professionals to get into high school classrooms to help with post-high school success. This is slice of the information that was shared among new and seasoned professionals! Roundtables are a great way to network and to gain knowledge. Sondra Stuart, a new MoCDA member had this to say, "The Roundtable was excellent! As a new employee it is good to get out and network with other and get to know professionals that work on some of the same materials as I will be working with." Fall Webinar Event NCDA Credentialing Initiative Webinar To serve our members, MoCDA creates many opportunities throughout the year for professional development through our conferences, workshops, roundtable discussions, and other events. As part of our efforts to connect our members with timely resources, on Friday, September 23, 2016 we offered a webinar event on the new NCDA credentialing initiative. During this webinar, 19 MoCDA members learned about how NCDA is defining quality in the career services profession. NCDA is planning to provide a series of career services credentials so that each role in the field is clearly defined. NCDA plans to revise the credentialing structure and provide the following certifications: • Certified Career Services Provider (CCSP)TM • Certified Clinical Supervisor of Career Counseling (CCSCC)TM • Certified Career Counselor (CCC)TM • Certified Master of Career Services (CMCS)TM
  • 3. • Certified Career Counselor Educator (CCCE)TM Members were provided details regarding what steps are being taken to solidify these credentials and what NCDA will be doing in the upcoming year to bring these to fruition. Marilyn Maze, current NCDA Treasurer and Executive Director of the Asia Pacific Career Development Association provided a detailed description of these credentials and answered questions regarding the new credentialing structure. Kay-lynne Taylor, Director, Career Development Center at Missouri Western State University had this to say, “The webinar last Friday provided really great information. Thank you so much!” Continue to check your email for information about upcoming webinars and other MoCDA events. November is Career Development Month MoCDA Members Help Promote Career Awareness in November November is career awareness month. As a way to celebrate and promote awareness the National Career Development Association (NCDA) sponsors the poetry and poster contest. This year’s theme is The Joy of Working: Positive Approaches to Work, Career and Life. (for more information: http://www.ncda.org/aws/NCDA/pt/sp/ncdmonth) The contest provides a great opportunity for students to express themselves and explore their interests, skills, abilities and overall career interests. This is where you come in. Do you know a student who would be interested in participating in the contest? Are you connected with a school, where you can pass the information on to art or language communications teacher? This is a great way to get involved as a member, if you have limited time. If you are interested contact: Catherine Nkonge Membership Committee Chair nkongek@hazinacs.com Hopefully you were able to celebrate with these Career Awareness events:
