3. •Carlos Sampayan Bulosan was an English-
language Filipino novelist and poet who
immigrated to America on July 1, 1930.He never
returned to the Philippines and he spent most of
his life in the United States.
4. • Carlos Sampayan Bulosan was a Filipino American
author, poet, and activist. A chronicler of the Filipino
American experience during the 1930s early 1950s, he
is best remembered for his semi-fictional, semi-
autobiographical novel America Is In the Heart (1946)
a staple in American Ethnic Studies and Asian
American Studies classes.
5. He arrived in Seattle, Washington where he was
confronted with racism and was forced to work low
paying jobs. He worked as a farmworker, harvesting
grapes and asparagus, while also working other
forms of hard labor in the fields of California. He
also worked as a dishwasher in the famous
Madonna Inn in San Luis Obispo.
6. •Though Bulosan was only 42 years old when he
died of tuberculosis-complicated pneumonia in
Seattle in 1956, he left behind a large body of
poems, novels, short stories, plays, and
correspondence on a range of related topics.
7. •He is best known for his novel, “America Is
in the Heart,” published in 1946. The novel
not only portrayed the appalling living and
working conditions that Filipino migrant
workers endured, but also served as a
personal account of one man’s struggle
against racism in America.
