CONV1011: Leading
   Edge Practices
     Presented by: Brooke
                    Nagle
“Leading Edge”

• The foremost position in a trend or
  movement

In an industry that is ever-evolving, there is increasing
global demand for innovative tourism experiences.
What: Sustainable Tourism
Practices
Sustainable tourism is attempting to make as low impact
on the environment and local culture as possible, while
helping to ensure that development brings a positive
experience for local people, tourism industries and the
                    tourists themselves.

The Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO) is
the official tourism business site of the
Caribbean, and with sustainability at its core
the CTO is truly a leader in the sustainable
               tourism movement.
What: Sustainable Tourism
Practices
Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)

• Mission:
“The CTOs mission is to provide to and through its members,
the services and information needed for the development of
sustainable tourism for the economic and social benefit of the
  Caribbean people”

                                  http://www.caribbeantravel.com/
                                     http://www.onecaribbean.org/
The CTO is unique because it is comprised of 40 different
countries. This unique network provides for a large group of
participants to help promote and develop sustainable tourism
                   practices and products.
Why: A Leader in
Sustainable Tourism
Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)

• The CTO recognizes the need for sustainability and has
therefore built it directly into their mission and vision. This
formalizes their obligations as top priority.

• The Caribbean Regional Sustainable Tourism Development
Programme (CRSTDP) was developed by the CTO to help
contribute to economic growth through increased
sustainability of the Caribbean tourism sector.
Why: A Leader in
Sustainable Tourism
Caribbean Tourism Organization (CTO)

• Every year the CTO hosts a regional sustainability conference
offering exhibitions, workshops, and networking opportunities.

• The CTO also participates in a number of international certification
programs and networks that help to promote and support
    sustainable tourism practices.
     – Sustainable Tourism Certification Network of the Americas
     – Green Globe Certification
     – Earth Check Certification
     – Blue Flag Programme
How: Environmental Link to
Futurists
Futurists have noted a number of
     environmental predictions that are linked
    to sustainable tourism practices including:

• Water shortages (Cetron)
• loss of biodiversity (Cetron)
• Loor air quality due to aviation emissions (Dixon)
• Using a greener-approach to tourism as a marketing
    tool (Hiemstra)
How: Impact on Careers
• Sustainable Tourism is designed to benefit communities
  and generate/retain income in those communities;
therefore, tourism should provide quality employment to
  community residents.

• Sustainable tourism is a new and evolving industry. With
new developments come new opportunities that would
allow you to put green-conscious ideas into action through
assessment, education, and communications. As more
tourism industries become aware of the impacts and
requirements for sustainable forms of tourism, more jobs
will be created to meet these demands.
How: Impact on Careers
• With an increase in technology helping move towards
sustainability, the use of electronic tools is creating job
losses in some tourism industries. In particular, travel
agencies and positions in hotels and airlines are going out
of business due to the ease and availability of online
  booking.

• Technology can also help to create jobs in other tourism
industries including marketing, communications and even
  space travel.
Application: For Sustainable
Tourism in Festivals & Events
Festivals and events provide benefits not only for the business
themselves, but for the community and the tourism industry as a
                               whole.
• When festivals and events are partnered with sustainable
practices, it unites communities with conservation and promotes
sustainability as a way of life.
• Towns, cities and organizations like the CTO are eager to share
their culture and environment with visitors through the promotion
  of sustainable events.
• Maintaining sustainable events within local communities will
help to improve the local economy as local and regional events
can increase visitation and expenditure, help lessen seasonality,
encourage repeat visitation and heighten destination
  awareness.
