2. A systematic approach
In the exam, you will be asked about the process of
approaching briefs, from the initial response right
through to the end of pre-production
You have to know exactly what tools are at your
disposal, and what the advantages and
disadvantages of each are
3. Different tools
Mind mapping – Used during the initial phase of
planning a project. Thoughts and ideas can be linked
together off a central hub
The lines gradually break down the detail of the idea to
“flesh it out”
4. Different tools
Moodboard – A collection of images, materials, words,
fonts and objects used to create a “feel” for a project
Also used to show possible colour schemes
5. Different tools
Blue-sky thinking– A meeting
where the brief is read, and
any thoughts, questions,
words, colours, associations
are written down.
No idea is ever discounted or
criticised at this stage
6. Different tools
SWOT analysis–
Strengths,
weaknesses,
opportunities, threats
(sometimes called
the “Boston
Consulting Matrix”
model)
Used to reduce a
large number of
initial ideas down to
the best solutions
