During the much-anticipated NCAA National Championship football game on January 9,
2017, the Clemson Tigers defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide 35-31, in a rematch of the
previous year's championship, which Alabama won 45-40. The victory was only the
second national title in Clemson’s history.

Alabama led 24-14 after three quarters, but in the fourth quarter Clemson grabbed its first
lead at 28-24. Alabama quickly responded, with Crimson Tide quarterback Jalen Hurts
completing a 30-yard scoring pass.

In the final minute of the game, Clemson marched up the field. The ball was at the 2-yard
line with only 6 seconds left. After a pass interference penalty against Alabama, Clemson
quarterback Deshaun Watson completed a touchdown pass to Hunter Renfrow. This
gave the Tigers their first championship since 1981.
