INTRODUCTION
DEFINITION
• Computer-mediated communication is defined as any
human communication that occurs through the use of
two or more electronic devices.
• That is, any communication between two or more
individuals who are interacted influence each other via
separate computers through the internet or a network
connection using social software.
CONCEPT OF COMPUTER MEDIATED
COMMUNICATION
• CMC, wherein people use computers and networks to
communicate with one another, makes communication across
great distances and different time zones convenient, eliminating
the time and geographic constraints of in-person
communication.
• It facilitates the development of communities for people with
common interests, regardless of their locations.
• Using electronic mail, text messaging, chat rooms, web-based
forums, and other technology to sustain meaningful
relationships between geographically disconnected people
allows us to reconsider the concept of community as a physical
location.
• The lack of social cues and social distinctions like gender, age,
disability, race, and physical appearance in CMC can make even
shy participants willing to share their views.
MEANING OF COMPUTER MEDIATED
COMMUNICATION
• CMC is an umbrella term that encompasses various forms of
human communication through networked computers, which
can be synchronous or asynchronous and involve one-to-one,
one-to-many, or many-to-many exchanges of text, audio, and/or
video messages.
• The development of computers and assistive technology makes
electronic communication possible for all individuals, regardless
of disability.
• For example, a person who is blind or has a disability
that makes reading difficult can use text-to-speech
software to read aloud text on a screen.
• An individual with limited use of his hands can use a
trackball, a head stick, speech input, or an alternative
keyboard to control the computer.
• A person with a speech or hearing impairment may be
able to participate more fully in communications when
they are conducted electronically.
CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER MEDIATED
COMMUNICATION
• Computer-mediated communication (CMC) focuses on the
role of interactivity between parties through mediated
channels of communication. The focus of CMC is on the
relationship of new messages with preceding messages,
rather than on the number, content, frequency, or timing of
the message exchange.
• Popular forms of CMC include e-mail, video, audio or text
chat (text conferencing including "instant messaging"),
bulletin board systems, list-serves, and MMOs. These
settings are changing rapidly with the development of new
technologies.
• Computer mediated communication reduces the effects of
communication to its lowest level while CMC is typed as an
extension of face-to-face communication. As social
creatures, humans have rapidly developed their ability to
socialize on the internet.
CMC AND EDUCATION
• Online learning offers students a chance to become a
component in electronic communication.
• The experience promotes lifelong learning as it empowers
individuals with the knowledge that they can research.
• Find information, interpret it and share it with others
• Provides students opportunity to network with a global
community of interesting people.
• Increasing more equal and open communication
• It changes the authority relationship between the teachers
and learners.
• CMC enables Institutions to reach students all over the
world.
• Learners may gain increased opportunities to experience
others' culture and their educational experience may be
enriched.
• CMC most commonly refers to the Collection
• Email
• Video
• Audio or text conferencing
• Bulletin board
• Multiplayer video games
• Instant messages
• Online chats
ADVANTAGES OF CMC
• Online information Databases
• Emphasis shifts from teaching to learning
• Disregards time and place dependence
• Facilitate the archive of information
• Instructional design
• Individual learning styles
• Increased interaction
• Expanded cultural awareness
• Lack of social barriers
LIMITATIONS OF CMC
• Learning: it is not practical for all purposes in education. As
most CMC occurs on a computer screen, it is difficult to
directly assess most physical behavior.
• Access and Compatibility: What happens to those who do
not have the money, skills to be able to use CMC ?
• Safety issues : The internet and the other social sites through
which the people are communicating are sometimes not safe
people usually face security issues . The issue of confidentiality
and trust exist.
• Necessary skills : For effective CMC you also need to have
discipline and patience.
• Face to face communication : The CMC has decrease the
interpersonal relationships among the people. Human
contact is necessary and important especially in this
information age in which students and teachers are
bombarded with information at every turn.
• Limits the richness of communication : Communication is not
about text and words . CMC is long noted to be lacking in
terms of social, emotional and nonverbal cues.
Misunderstanding might happen due to from interpretations
of the tall and meanings of words.
