ETHICS NOTES
What do you understand by Ethics?
OR
What is Ethics? Give logical argument that Ethics is integral
part of religion?
ETHICS
 Ethics is the science of behaviour.
 Ethics is the science of voluntary actions of man and is related with society.
 Ethics teaches us discrimination between right and wrong. It differentiates
between right and wrong deeds which a person should do.
 Ethics is normative science of conduct and conduct is a collective name of
voluntary actions.
 Ethics teaches what our duties are and what our rights are.
 Ethics is a part of philosophy which means to know the truth of anything. It
can be said that Ethics is one of the branch of “philosophy”.
In philosophy we come to know about everything that is present in the world. We come to
know what world is. What is soul? And what is the relation between soul and body? Whether the
soul dies with the body or it does not? What is time? What is space? What is evil? How good deeds
performed? Why we have been created and what is the aim of life?
To sum up that from Ethics we come to know that which deeds are good and which are
bad. Ethics makes us realize our duties and convinces us to perform them. Sometimes Ethics
bounds us to limitations e.g. suppose a student feels like going to movie during examination, Ethics
will stop him/her and force him/her not to do so. This action of his/her is Ethics.
Ethics is that deed which guides a person in the right path. It teaches how to discriminate
between bad and good deed. Though according to Sociology and Psychology action is told but
they don’t teach the difference. They relate only about facts, but Ethics relates to both values and
facts.
Through the guidance Ethics we can achieve our real destination. Ethics teaches us to be
honest, true and sincere in every walk of life, which ultimately will lead to real happiness in life.
Ethics has relation with history also. Whole history is full of bad and good deeds. One example
can be given in this reference to show how great Ethics is?
Hazrat Umar (R.A) used to keep strict vigilance about his citizens used to disguise himself
and move during the night time. One night as he was passing by he heard musical voice from a
house. This made him very angry and he crossed over the wall and jumped inside the house, and
started screaming at the dwellers. He shouted at them by saying that O Muslims aren’t you
ashamed of yourselves. You are performing an action for which the Holy Prophet Muhammad
(P.B.U.H) has forbidden us to do, and now you suggest how I should punish you. With the words
he tried to take out his sword from the scabbard and all the members started shivering due to
fruitfulness. One of the women said “O Righteous Caliph we are all culprits because we have not
obeyed Prophet’s saying but you who is known for justice has crossed over the wall and entered
the house without permission. Who will punish you for this deed? On hearing these words Hazrat
Umar (R.A) because downtrodden in shame started thinking about the crime which he had
committed. Instantly he said “Yes I have committed a crime and for God’s sake forgive me. On
doomsday how I will face my Allah” and stared crying badly. On reaching home he prayed to
Allah to forgive his sin which he had committed by mistake.
This is all due to the education of Ethics which made Hazrat Umar (R.A) the great king to
ask for forgiveness from Allah for the sin he committed, in an ordinary way as a common man
would do. Therefore we should also follow the footsteps of Hazrat Umar (R.A) and never commit
injustice with anyone. We should always keep fear of God in our hearts.
POSITION OF ETHICS IN ALL RELIGIONS
Religion starts in believing in any supreme power and surrendering to the will of the God.
Belief makes a man’s life strong and he leads the life in the right path.
“Ethics is the basis of religion”. From early ages until now many religions have originated
in this world, and many have vanished and many are still left, but all of them have pointed out
Ethics. We may call them the pioneers of Ethics, which is no false statement.
In Ethics the limitations are limited though religion stresses upon rights and duties on a
wide scale. Ethics is related to the freedom of individuals and will of individual but religion
imposes limitations.
In Ethics mind’s power is superior. Though in religion, particular feelings are important.
Ethics is related to human contact whereas religion is directed towards some supreme being. Let’s
now see what the position of Ethics in different religions is.
ISLAM
As far as Islam is concerned every prophet has stressed on Ethics. This ethical trend was
set by Hazrat Adam which continued up to the last prophet i.e. Holy Prophet Muhammad
(P.B.U.H.).
The word ‘Islam’ means ‘to obey or surrender’ and real sense it means “to obey the orders
of the Allah.” Holy Quran is source of Ethics, which all the Muslims have to follow and obey.
Certain rules which come under Ethics are to be obeyed by all Muslims such as:-
1) Be content or happy with the will of God.
2) Spread money for God’s cause i.e. Zakat and Sadakats
3) Help poor and needy.
4) Share neighbours’ and friends’ happiness and sorrows.
5) Do justice.
6) Be patient in grief.
7) Be helpful to orphans, helpless and needy people.
8) Adopt cleanliness in life.
9) Treat everyone with love and affection.
10) Cover the ill deeds of others.
11) Earn with honesty. etc.
Before Islam people were fed up monarchy, land lordship, Jewish, spiritualism etc. Islam
threw light on ethical values and people started accepting the new religion Islam.
CHRISTIANITY
In Christianity ethical rituals were given by Church of Pharaoh Wasti. That is the reason
which gave this thought. It is the world known fact any good deed of an individual or tribe is
appreciated. Good deeds play an important role in developing the personality of a person. Spending
a good and well organized life depends on one’s gentleness. It is due to his gentleness that people
are impressed by and they follow his/her footsteps.
HINDUSIM
Hinduism or Sanatan religion is the oldest religion of the world. It has taught how a human
being should live life in the world. It has taught how a human being should live with brotherhood,
love for humanity, justice, equality, truth, cleanliness and freedom of thought.
Hinduism believes in God who is omnipresent, omnipotent, well known of everything,
eternal, all prevailing absolute and one supreme. It shows ways and means to reach God, which
are: ‘Gyan Path’, ‘Karam Path’. They guide every Hindu according to his/her intellectual.
Hinduism is as revealed as other religions, on the contrary it goes one step forward and
says that ethical values of this religion keep on being visible continuously, because it is not only
the experience of one person. The greatness of Hinduism lies in truth which can be verified at any
time both spiritually and truthfully.
In the same way it is clear that Ethics plays an important basic role in all religions of the
world.
BUDHHISM
The founder of Buddhism is Gautam Buddha. He believed in ‘Ahimsa’ that is not to hurt
even a crawling insect. From this we can imagine a person who gives so much importance to an
insect. What would his values or importance for other creation would be. He loved love for all
humanity. Gautam Buddha has presented many ethical deeds. Such as: -
1) Do away from desires.
2) Give charity from your earnings.
3) Don’t hurt anyone.
4) Speak truth.
5) Always think positively.
6) Perform good deeds.
7) Give good advices.
8) Keep good advices.
9) Not to feel miserable in griefs and sorrows.
10) Face difficulties of life. etc.
It means whether we study any religion of the world we can say that all religions give same
ethical values and ethical morals. No religion of the world teaches hatred for humanity. Every
religion criticizes pride. Every religion preaches humanity, and says that we are all human beings.
There is no one superior and inferior among us. Only goodness and good character makes one
person different from others.
The religion of Buddhism is one of oldest religion but its principles
are very modern and acceptable by all the religious people. What are
those principles and why are those liked by every religion?
OR
Write the life history of Gautam Buddha. Why he renounced the
worldly life? Also mention his ethical noble thoughts.
BUDHISM
Before discussing the principles of Buddhism we should first know about the history of
Buddhism. The principles of Buddhism are acceptable to all humanity.
Buddhism is basically a religion which is against rates buruo. The beginner of his religion
is the prince of Nepal named “Gautam”. His real name was siddharth . His father’s name was
Sidhuwana. At the time it was called Kapilawastu which now has become Nepal.
GAUTAM BUDDH
Prince Sidhartha (Gautam) was born in year 567 A.D. He was a man of sensitive nature,
from his childhood he used to think about everything. He used to think why people have so many
sorrows in their life, and why they are fed up with life because of this reason astrologers had
already told the king Sidhuwana that Gautam will renounce the world and will become a hermit
so don’t allow him to leave the palace. But that happened which feared, Gautam left all the
happiness, kingdom, and become a hermit who lived in jungle.
Once Gautam saw a sick man and asked his Guru (teacher) “What has happened to him?”
Guru replied “He is a sick man”. Gautam asked again “Why he has become sick”, to which his
guru replied “Every person becomes sick due to fate”.
Second time Gautam saw a funeral, he asked his Guru “What has happened to this man?”
Guru replied “he has expired”. Gautam asked “Why do people die?” Guru said “A person who is
created has to die one day”. Gautam for a long time thought over the life and death again and
again he used to think why human’s life is full of sorrows and happiness is less. Gautam couldn’t
find satisfactory answers to his questions that why he left the comforts of the palace and being
fed up with life. One night, he disguised himself and went to jungle in search of Nirvan (Mukti).
Gautam first of all went to Hindu seers where he did penance (a worship to attain
something). He did such deep penance that he became weak, but still he didn’t attain Nirvan i.e.
Peace of mind and soul that’s why he left the seers.
At last being fed up, he went and lived down beneath the tree where he attained Nirvan
by deep meditation and his inner self was lightened.
GAUTAM’S EDUCATION
When Gautam attained Nirvan, it totally changed his life he came to know that:
1 The world is house of sorrows, every human is unhappy, everyone who as been created
will die, he becomes sick and old. Sickness, oldness and death are destined for every
human and no one can escape them.
2 There is one reason or the other for sorrows. Without any reason happiness and sorrows
don’t come, therefore it shows that law of karma takes place, which means, one who does
good deeds, he will rewarded with happiness and joy and one who does bad deed will be
punished accordingly with grief and sorrows. Cause of happiness and sorrows depends on
what person desires, and due to desire human being has to take birth again and again, till
he turns his face away from desires then he will attain Nirvan, therefore for attaining
Nirvan desires should be killed: on killing desire a human may be freed from the circle of
birth and death.
THE PRINCPLES OF BUDHISM ACCEPTABLE FOR ALL
RELIGIOUS PEOPLE
All the people of the world are at one with Gautam Buddha’s principle because believers
of Gautam Buddha belong to religions such as Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, and Judaism. No
person of any of the above religions differs in opinion with his principles, and collectively are
the principles are worth practicing.
NIRVAN RELEASE (GIFT)
According to Budha human being is a complex of desires. If he is born he dies also. If his
desire is not fulfilled upon his death he comes to earth again in a new incarnation. He keeps on
searching spiritual solace. If he is successful in it. He attains release or mukti and he will be
released from the cycle of birth and death otherwise the process goes on.
Gautam has called this release as Nirvan which means "Freedom or Deliverance". For
achieving freedom or Nirvan one has to kill his desires and follow a right path which will may
him lead a happy life.
Following are the principles for achieving Nirvan.
 Correct thought.
 Correct determination.
 Correct speaking.
 Correct deeds.
 Lead a correct life.
 Correct trials.
 Correct heart.
 Correct thought.
No belief in God:
In front of Gautam Buddha respect has no meaning. Whenever he was questioned about
the existence of God he used to say "It is a non-sense question? Actual thing is that a man should
have good morals and character by which he treats all living beings in the same way.
All the religions disagree to this principle but no one can differ on this point that any
person is not superior to other person if his morals and character are good and love all living
creatures uniformly. Islam calls this action as "Taqwa", Hindus as karan and Christianity has
named it as "deeds"
No belief in levels or caste system:
Gautam Budha totally disagreed in the existence of caste system. He used to say that
there is no difference between a Brahmin and Shudra, all humans are on the same level.
The principle is quite old but today even everybody agrees to this that all humans are
equal. Today many demarcations have been removed and humans have come close to each other.
Today Brahmin visits the house of Shudra and Kshtriya and Shudra are doing the same business.
Where as Islam and other religions have no concept of caste and creed.
No belief on philosophy:
Gautam did not believe in "Vedas" though hindus believed strongly in that philosophy.
He stressed that only character should be good and discussions over unethical things should be
avoided.
To achieve reality:
Gautam said that a human should try to find ways to attain "Nirvam" which means that
light he should create from his inner self which shows that he has acquired the right knowledge.
That is the way to Mukti and he is freed from sorrows, as none of his desires die and he lives a
happy content life.
Concept of Re-birth:
Gautam Buddha has said that every person who dies is born again and the cycle of birth
and death goes on, till he attains "Mukti or Nirvam". A human is born again because if any one
of his desires is not fulfilled or incomplete or he has done any bad deed for which he has to
repent.
Gautam Buddha is of the opinion that Hinduism accepts this opinion. None other
religions agree to it. Once a human is born it is up to him what kind of deeds he performs during
his life time.
Due to the above mentioned principles even today the old principles are acceptable and
every human likes them because the base of all principles is "Humanity" and thus all the people
of all religions follow them.
What is TRINITY? How far are these people justified to
believe in this line of action?
Christians-who believe in Lord Jesus and his principles, explain trinity in the following
way: GROUP or Union of three GOD, FATHER and HOLY SPIRIT in one God.
Which means, Combination of father, son and Holy Spirit.
 God-Father
 Jesus-Son
 Holy Ghost-Holy spirit
Now let us understand what trinity means:
GOD
As God has sent prophets for all people, in the same way He has sent for Christians Jesus
Christ who showed a path to the wandering nation, and showed the code of life, because of
which they tread on the right path. This is lucky nation upon which the God bestowed the holy
book “BIBLE”, because of which this nation sees the existence of God and has faith in him.
JESUS CHRIST
Jesus Christ was the son of lady Mariam and was born without a father, as he was a boon
of God. This was not accepted by his community and thus they tried to kill him. He said “I am
the prophet of your nation and has been sent by the God on this earth”.
He was bestowed with many qualities. He touched the eye of blind man; he instantly got
back his sight. He cured the sick by his gentle touching because of these qualities the Christians
called him the son of God.
HOLY GHOST
Cross is a pure sign which Christians wear and feel proud of it. In the same way as
Muslims consider tasbee and Hindus mala and pray with its help. In the same way Christians to
confirm something or in difficult times use it. The story of the cross is a very pathetic story.
Jesus Christ was thought to be wrong and was crucified by nailing both his arms open and body
into a wooden frame. In grief of his crucification “cross” is made.
All these three i.e. God, Son and Holy Spirit are very holy for Christians and together
they called it “Trinity”.
Discuss the following religions along with their ethical
values.
 Islam
 Hinduism
 Judaism
ISLAM
Islam is an Arabic word which has been derived from the word “salam” which means
peace and weapon and literally it means to obey the commands of God, bow before Him and
follow Him.
Explanation:
Islam is religion of unity, through which Allah sent commands from Hazrat Adam to the
Hazrat Muhammad (P.B.U.H). Islam is a divine religion in which equality and brotherhood have
been high lightened because of these true and real laws many people have accepted the religion
Islam. Islam is the only religion which gives peace of heart, mind and soul.

that time of calculation is called Qayamat. Thus to believe and have faith in this is a
compulsion for all Muslims.
6. Belief on fate:
Every Muslim should believe in fate, whether it is good or bad. Every human will be
examined therefore it is useless to curse the fate, instead overcome the difficulties and bring
positive changes in luck.

ISLAM’S AIM OF LIFE
Islam is a universal religion. It is through Islam, a human can trend on the right path which
are mentioned in it. If a human follows or practices according to them, his/her aim of coming to
this world is fully-served.
HINDUISM
Hinduism is the oldest religion. It is also called Sanatam Dharma which means “Ancient”
religion.
Hinduism was brought to sub-continent by the race Aryans but few significances show that
it was started from the people living on the banks of River Ganges. In spite of this many temples
have been found on digging in which copper things and statues of Gods have been found. These
findings show that this religion came into existence in the world after 1000 years of its creation.
Followers of Hinduism believe in unity of one God, whom they call ‘Bhagwan’. Muslims
and Christians call Him God and ‘Khuda’.
Bhagwan (god) is the one who is above all. Nobody is like him and nor does any human has
the number of qualities as he has. That all powerful Bhagwan has no colour and no shape. He is
the only truth and all living and non-living creations of the world are untrue or false. He is the
creator of all creations and rarer of all beings. Nobody is as powerful as him. In this world every
living creature is his part and he is the creator or whole. Everybody is visible to him but nobody
can see Him.
It is said that in beginning ‘Par Braham Parmeshwar (Bhagwan)’ thought of creating a
world in which male, female, living/non-living with all facilities and he produces three
incarnations or three powers of Himself:
Bhagwan Brahma with Devi Saraswati.
Bhagwan Vishnu with Devi Lakshmi.
Bhagwan Shankar with Devi Parvati.
When these three super powers were created, He distributed different Jobs like:
Bhagwan Brahma had to create the world.
Bhagwan Vishnu the rearer of the world.
Bhagwan Mahadev the destroyer of the world.
In this way slowly and gradually the world came into existence.
In Hinduism there are thirty three crores deities in which Yamraj is the deity of death and Indar
is the king of deities.
In Hinduism there are four Vedas.
1) Rig Ved.
2) Yajur Ved.
3) Athar Ved.
4) Sham Ved, now Sam Ved is in practice.
In Hinduism there are 6 Shastras, 18 Purans and 4 Upn Veds and Ap Veds.
In Hinduism the famous books are Geeta and Ramayan. Geeta has the same importance in
religion as Holy Quran has in Islam, and Bible n Christianity.
Geeta has been revealed by Lord Krishna himself, which during the war between Pandavas
and Kauravas, Krishna explained Arjun.
Ramayan is essence of Bhagwan Ram’s life of 14 years exile in jungle.
According to Hinduism there are four Yugs:
1) Sat Yug.
2) Treta Yug.
3) Duwapur Yug and Kal Yug.
Bhagwan Ram incarnated in Treta Yug and Bhagwan Krishan incarnated in Duwapur Yug.
At the moment Kal Yug is passing which is in its infancy (starting) period.
All the believers of Hinduism believe in re-birth according to which one who comes has to go
and in the same way the cycle goes on. According to this every human takes birth according to
his karmas. The deeds which have done in his previous birth are suffered and delighted in his
current birth.
In Hinduism there are 4 castes.
1) Brahmin
2) Kshtriya
3) Vaish
4) Shudra
According to Hinduism:
1) Brahmin have been created from the mouth portion; that is why they are pious. Their
duty is to execute religious affairs.
2) Kshtriya have been created from the arms portion of God Vishnu and they execute the
affairs of ruling class.
3) Vaish caste people look into the trade agriculture and services.
4) Shudra have been created to serve all the castes. They are termed as lower caste.
In Hinduism there are three grand festivals.
1) Diwali
2) Holi
3) Dushera
DEEPAWALI
Deepawali is great day of celebration. This word has been derived from Sanskrit
language which means “To burn lamps” because on this day Lord Rama came back from the
exile of 14 years and thus people rejoiced by burning lamps, fire crackers are cracked on his
arrival to show their feelings.
HOLI
Holi is celebrated due to a Lady named Holka burnt herself alive in consequence of a
cruel King. That’s why Hindus throw red colour on each other and give reverence to the dead
Holka.
DUSHERA
Lord Rama after killing Rawan “the cruelty symbol of the earth”, celebrated “Dushera”.
As Rawan had 10 heads that’s why this day is called Dushera. On this day they burn his
dummies.
The biggest temple of hindus is in America which is called “Temple of Understanding”.
When hindus meet each other they greet each other by saying “Namastey”
In hindus divorse practise is almost nil.
Followers of Hindu religion in number or figure are third in the world, after Christians
and Muslims.
Followers of Hindu religion maximum 50 crores which are found in Hindustan.
According to Hindu philosophy the whole universe s made up of four things.
1) Bhumi (earth)
2) Agni (fire)
3) Jal (water)
4) Vayu (air)
JEWISM (JUDAISM)
The followers of Hazrat Moosa are called Jews. This religion was present before Hazrat
Moosa and therefore it is counted as the one of oldest religions.
The sacred book of Jews is called “Taurat” which means “Law of life”.
Jewism started with Hazrat Yaqoob, He was the son of Hazrat Ibrahim. The family of Hazrat
Yaqook is called as “Israelis” who migrated to Egypt in the beginning. After coming to Egypt
the Jews left the religion of Allah and continuously started being cruel to those who followed the
laws f God but the great rulers of Egypt crushed them. Afterwards Hazrat Moosa was sent as a
messenger to the world, to save Jews and He (Hazrat Moosa) took them to the mountain of
Tawrseena where Allah sent Holy Taurat on Earth.
Jews believe on the following 10 commands of this book;
1) Iam God. I was sent from Egypt.
2) Not to believe anyone else except one as the God.
3) The day of Sabt is to be remembered and believe it to be Holy.
4) It is not useless to remember Allah.
5) Parents should be respected.
6) Womanizing should be shunned.
7) Killing is a sin.
8) Robbery should not be done.
9) Being a false witness is a sin.
10) Treat neighbors in a good way.
Belief of Jews:
In the religious book of Jews Taurat some important things have been said on which the
Jews believe and thus are called their beliefs.
1) Belief in Allah’s unity.
2) Belief in Allah’s power.
3) Worship only one Allah.
4) Have belief in prophets.
5) Hazrat Moosa to be considered as the greatest prophet.
6) Believe that “Taurrat” was sent to Hazrat Moosa on the mountain of Tawrseena.
7) Deeds are rewarded and punished.
8) Deeds or practices will be dealt with.
9) Believe that Hazrat Moosa will come back.
10) Believe that there is life after death.
SYNAGOGUE:
The place of worship of Jews is called Synagogue. The origin of Synagogue took place in
5th
century. Before that sacrifice of animals in old temples by priests was thought to be worship.
Synagogue has three basic aims:
1) Worship.
2) Recite the Holy book taurat.
3) Gathering of people.
Other than this Synagogue is used for political, social and juridical purposes.
SABT DAY:
Sabt is one of the ten main principles Jews believe that Allah has created this world in six
days and on 7th
day he took rest. Therefore it is necessary for Jews to take rest on the 7th
day.
This day starts at the end of Friday (sunset) and ends on the next day till evening. This belief is
called Sabbath. Sabt means Saturday.
“Rabi” according to Jewism “Rabi” is there judicial or religious teacher, who have
memorized the book “Taurat” orally. Rabi guides the Jews according to the religious book.

Ethics 2

  • 1. ETHICS NOTES What do you understand by Ethics? OR What is Ethics? Give logical argument that Ethics is integral part of religion? ETHICS  Ethics is the science of behaviour.  Ethics is the science of voluntary actions of man and is related with society.  Ethics teaches us discrimination between right and wrong. It differentiates between right and wrong deeds which a person should do.  Ethics is normative science of conduct and conduct is a collective name of voluntary actions.  Ethics teaches what our duties are and what our rights are.  Ethics is a part of philosophy which means to know the truth of anything. It can be said that Ethics is one of the branch of “philosophy”. In philosophy we come to know about everything that is present in the world. We come to know what world is. What is soul? And what is the relation between soul and body? Whether the soul dies with the body or it does not? What is time? What is space? What is evil? How good deeds performed? Why we have been created and what is the aim of life? To sum up that from Ethics we come to know that which deeds are good and which are bad. Ethics makes us realize our duties and convinces us to perform them. Sometimes Ethics bounds us to limitations e.g. suppose a student feels like going to movie during examination, Ethics will stop him/her and force him/her not to do so. This action of his/her is Ethics. Ethics is that deed which guides a person in the right path. It teaches how to discriminate between bad and good deed. Though according to Sociology and Psychology action is told but they don’t teach the difference. They relate only about facts, but Ethics relates to both values and facts. Through the guidance Ethics we can achieve our real destination. Ethics teaches us to be honest, true and sincere in every walk of life, which ultimately will lead to real happiness in life. Ethics has relation with history also. Whole history is full of bad and good deeds. One example can be given in this reference to show how great Ethics is? Hazrat Umar (R.A) used to keep strict vigilance about his citizens used to disguise himself and move during the night time. One night as he was passing by he heard musical voice from a house. This made him very angry and he crossed over the wall and jumped inside the house, and
  • 2. started screaming at the dwellers. He shouted at them by saying that O Muslims aren’t you ashamed of yourselves. You are performing an action for which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H) has forbidden us to do, and now you suggest how I should punish you. With the words he tried to take out his sword from the scabbard and all the members started shivering due to fruitfulness. One of the women said “O Righteous Caliph we are all culprits because we have not obeyed Prophet’s saying but you who is known for justice has crossed over the wall and entered the house without permission. Who will punish you for this deed? On hearing these words Hazrat Umar (R.A) because downtrodden in shame started thinking about the crime which he had committed. Instantly he said “Yes I have committed a crime and for God’s sake forgive me. On doomsday how I will face my Allah” and stared crying badly. On reaching home he prayed to Allah to forgive his sin which he had committed by mistake. This is all due to the education of Ethics which made Hazrat Umar (R.A) the great king to ask for forgiveness from Allah for the sin he committed, in an ordinary way as a common man would do. Therefore we should also follow the footsteps of Hazrat Umar (R.A) and never commit injustice with anyone. We should always keep fear of God in our hearts. POSITION OF ETHICS IN ALL RELIGIONS Religion starts in believing in any supreme power and surrendering to the will of the God. Belief makes a man’s life strong and he leads the life in the right path. “Ethics is the basis of religion”. From early ages until now many religions have originated in this world, and many have vanished and many are still left, but all of them have pointed out Ethics. We may call them the pioneers of Ethics, which is no false statement. In Ethics the limitations are limited though religion stresses upon rights and duties on a wide scale. Ethics is related to the freedom of individuals and will of individual but religion imposes limitations. In Ethics mind’s power is superior. Though in religion, particular feelings are important. Ethics is related to human contact whereas religion is directed towards some supreme being. Let’s now see what the position of Ethics in different religions is. ISLAM As far as Islam is concerned every prophet has stressed on Ethics. This ethical trend was set by Hazrat Adam which continued up to the last prophet i.e. Holy Prophet Muhammad (P.B.U.H.). The word ‘Islam’ means ‘to obey or surrender’ and real sense it means “to obey the orders of the Allah.” Holy Quran is source of Ethics, which all the Muslims have to follow and obey. Certain rules which come under Ethics are to be obeyed by all Muslims such as:- 1) Be content or happy with the will of God. 2) Spread money for God’s cause i.e. Zakat and Sadakats
  • 3. 3) Help poor and needy. Islam threw light on ethical values and people started accepting the new religion Islam. CHRISTIANITY In Christianity ethical rituals were given by Church of Pharaoh Wasti. That is the reason which gave this thought. It is the world known fact any good deed of an individual or tribe is appreciated. Good deeds play an important role in developing the personality of a person. Spending a good and well organized life depends on one’s gentleness. It is due to his gentleness that people are impressed by and they follow his/her footsteps. HINDUSIM Hinduism or Sanatan religion is the oldest religion of the world. It has taught how a human being should live life in the world. It has taught how a human being should live with brotherhood, love for humanity, justice, equality, truth, cleanliness and freedom of thought. Hinduism believes in God who is omnipresent, omnipotent, well known of everything, eternal, all prevailing absolute and one supreme. It shows ways and means to reach God, which are: ‘Gyan Path’, ‘Karam Path’. They guide every Hindu according to his/her intellectual. Hinduism is as revealed as other religions, on the contrary it goes one step forward and says that ethical values of this religion keep on being visible continuously, because it is not only the experience of one person. The greatness of Hinduism lies in truth which can be verified at any time both spiritually and truthfully. In the same way it is clear that Ethics plays an important basic role in all religions of the world. BUDHHISM The founder of Buddhism is Gautam Buddha. He believed in ‘Ahimsa’ that is not to hurt even a crawling insect. From this we can imagine a person who gives so much importance to an insect. What would his values or importance for other creation would be. He loved love for all humanity. Gautam Buddha has presented many ethical deeds. Such as: -
  • 4. 1) Do away from desires. 2) Give charity from your earnings. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Speak truth. 5) Always think positively. 6) Perform good deeds. 7) Give good advices. 8) Keep good advices. 9) Not to feel miserable in griefs and sorrows. 10) Face difficulties of life. etc. It means whether we study any religion of the world we can say that all religions give same ethical values and ethical morals. No religion of the world teaches hatred for humanity. Every religion criticizes pride. Every religion preaches humanity, and says that we are all human beings. There is no one superior and inferior among us. Only goodness and good character makes one person different from others. The religion of Buddhism is one of oldest religion but its principles are very modern and acceptable by all the religious people. What are those principles and why are those liked by every religion? OR Write the life history of Gautam Buddha. Why he renounced the worldly life? Also mention his ethical noble thoughts. BUDHISM Before discussing the principles of Buddhism we should first know about the history of Buddhism. The principles of Buddhism are acceptable to all humanity. Buddhism is basically a religion which is against rates buruo. The beginner of his religion is the prince of Nepal named “Gautam”. His real name was siddharth . His father’s name was Sidhuwana. At the time it was called Kapilawastu which now has become Nepal. GAUTAM BUDDH Prince Sidhartha (Gautam) was born in year 567 A.D. He was a man of sensitive nature, from his childhood he used to think about everything. He used to think why people have so many sorrows in their life, and why they are fed up with life because of this reason astrologers had already told the king Sidhuwana that Gautam will renounce the world and will become a hermit so don’t allow him to leave the palace. But that happened which feared, Gautam left all the happiness, kingdom, and become a hermit who lived in jungle.
  • 5. Once Gautam saw a sick man and asked his Guru (teacher) “What has happened to him?” Guru replied “He is a sick man”. Gautam asked again “Why he has become sick”, to which his guru replied “Every person becomes sick due to fate”. Second time Gautam saw a funeral, he asked his Guru “What has happened to this man?” Guru replied “he has expired”. Gautam asked “Why do people die?” Guru said “A person who is created has to die one day”. Gautam for a long time thought over the life and death again and again he used to think why human’s life is full of sorrows and happiness is less. Gautam couldn’t find satisfactory answers to his questions that why he left the comforts of the palace and being fed up with life. One night, he disguised himself and went to jungle in search of Nirvan (Mukti). Gautam first of all went to Hindu seers where he did penance (a worship to attain something). He did such deep penance that he became weak, but still he didn’t attain Nirvan i.e. Peace of mind and soul that’s why he left the seers. At last being fed up, he went and lived down beneath the tree where he attained Nirvan by deep meditation and his inner self was lightened. GAUTAM’S EDUCATION When Gautam attained Nirvan, it totally changed his life he came to know that: 1 The world is house of sorrows, every human is unhappy, everyone who as been created will die, he becomes sick and old. Sickness, oldness and death are destined for every human and no one can escape them. 2 There is one reason or the other for sorrows. Without any reason happiness and sorrows don’t come, therefore it shows that law of karma takes place, which means, one who does good deeds, he will rewarded with happiness and joy and one who does bad deed will be punished accordingly with grief and sorrows. Cause of happiness and sorrows depends on what person desires, and due to desire human being has to take birth again and again, till he turns his face away from desires then he will attain Nirvan, therefore for attaining Nirvan desires should be killed: on killing desire a human may be freed from the circle of birth and death. THE PRINCPLES OF BUDHISM ACCEPTABLE FOR ALL RELIGIOUS PEOPLE All the people of the world are at one with Gautam Buddha’s principle because believers of Gautam Buddha belong to religions such as Hinduism, Christianity, Sikhism, and Judaism. No person of any of the above religions differs in opinion with his principles, and collectively are the principles are worth practicing.
  • 6. NIRVAN RELEASE (GIFT) According to Budha human being is a complex of desires. If he is born he dies also. If his desire is not fulfilled upon his death he comes to earth again in a new incarnation. He keeps on searching spiritual solace. If he is successful in it. He attains release or mukti and he will be released from the cycle of birth and death otherwise the process goes on. Gautam has called this release as Nirvan which means "Freedom or Deliverance". For achieving freedom or Nirvan one has to kill his desires and follow a right path which will may him lead a happy life. Following are the principles for achieving Nirvan.  Correct thought.  Correct determination.  Correct speaking.  Correct deeds.  Lead a correct life.  Correct trials.  Correct heart.  Correct thought. No belief in God: In front of Gautam Buddha respect has no meaning. Whenever he was questioned about the existence of God he used to say "It is a non-sense question? Actual thing is that a man should have good morals and character by which he treats all living beings in the same way. All the religions disagree to this principle but no one can differ on this point that any person is not superior to other person if his morals and character are good and love all living creatures uniformly. Islam calls this action as "Taqwa", Hindus as karan and Christianity has named it as "deeds" No belief in levels or caste system: Gautam Budha totally disagreed in the existence of caste system. He used to say that there is no difference between a Brahmin and Shudra, all humans are on the same level. The principle is quite old but today even everybody agrees to this that all humans are equal. Today many demarcations have been removed and humans have come close to each other. Today Brahmin visits the house of Shudra and Kshtriya and Shudra are doing the same business. Where as Islam and other religions have no concept of caste and creed. No belief on philosophy: Gautam did not believe in "Vedas" though hindus believed strongly in that philosophy. He stressed that only character should be good and discussions over unethical things should be avoided.
  • 7. To achieve reality: Gautam said that a human should try to find ways to attain "Nirvam" which means that light he should create from his inner self which shows that he has acquired the right knowledge. That is the way to Mukti and he is freed from sorrows, as none of his desires die and he lives a happy content life. Concept of Re-birth: Gautam Buddha has said that every person who dies is born again and the cycle of birth and death goes on, till he attains "Mukti or Nirvam". A human is born again because if any one of his desires is not fulfilled or incomplete or he has done any bad deed for which he has to repent. Gautam Buddha is of the opinion that Hinduism accepts this opinion. None other religions agree to it. Once a human is born it is up to him what kind of deeds he performs during his life time. Due to the above mentioned principles even today the old principles are acceptable and every human likes them because the base of all principles is "Humanity" and thus all the people of all religions follow them. What is TRINITY? How far are these people justified to believe in this line of action? Christians-who believe in Lord Jesus and his principles, explain trinity in the following way: GROUP or Union of three GOD, FATHER and HOLY SPIRIT in one God. Which means, Combination of father, son and Holy Spirit.  God-Father  Jesus-Son  Holy Ghost-Holy spirit Now let us understand what trinity means: GOD As God has sent prophets for all people, in the same way He has sent for Christians Jesus Christ who showed a path to the wandering nation, and showed the code of life, because of which they tread on the right path. This is lucky nation upon which the God bestowed the holy book “BIBLE”, because of which this nation sees the existence of God and has faith in him. JESUS CHRIST Jesus Christ was the son of lady Mariam and was born without a father, as he was a boon of God. This was not accepted by his community and thus they tried to kill him. He said “I am the prophet of your nation and has been sent by the God on this earth”.
  • 8. He was bestowed with many qualities. He touched the eye of blind man; he instantly got back his sight. He cured the sick by his gentle touching because of these qualities the Christians called him the son of God. HOLY GHOST Cross is a pure sign which Christians wear and feel proud of it. In the same way as Muslims consider tasbee and Hindus mala and pray with its help. In the same way Christians to confirm something or in difficult times use it. The story of the cross is a very pathetic story. Jesus Christ was thought to be wrong and was crucified by nailing both his arms open and body into a wooden frame. In grief of his crucification “cross” is made. All these three i.e. God, Son and Holy Spirit are very holy for Christians and together they called it “Trinity”. Discuss the following religions along with their ethical values.  Islam  Hinduism  Judaism ISLAM Islam is an Arabic word which has been derived from the word “salam” which means peace and weapon and literally it means to obey the commands of God, bow before Him and follow Him.
