2. OBJECTIVES
• IDENTIFY DIFFERENT TYPES OF PHASE RELATION TO
FORM COMPLEX SUBJECT.
• CLASSIFY DOCUMENTS THAT DISPLAY PHASE RELATION ,
USING THE COLON CLASSIFICATION .
3. Dr. S.R. Ranganathan first introduced the term ‘Phase’. In the very
first edition (1937) of his Colon Classification(CC) he used the symbol as
a bias device to bring together .
Each component of an assemblage, whether of subject or isolates is
called Phase , and the bond or relation of the components is called
Phase relation.
The well-defined concept of distinctive phase relations and their
notational representations have enabled CC to assign homonym-free
specific class numbers to complex subjects and complex isolates ,
indicating their phase relations.
