Hello everyone,
First at all I will try to explain what is a web documentary after this stage I will present how we can produce a web documentary and finally
My collegue will present how to use web documentaries in a pedagogical aspect .
The starting point are two elements : the documentary and the web .
A priori those two elements don’t have a lot of common things .
But here there are considered as parents of a new entity . This new entity is the web documentary. clk
We will try to explore the proprieties of this child in regard of its parents .
So begin to have a look to the characteristics of the documentary .
It is no easy to define because we often confuse it with a film report . clk
Documentary is like cinema because it is a fiction a fiction based on reality but however a fiction
in a film report we can watch images of reality with a audio commentary .For example in a film report about a flood we could see houses with water inside and people who are trying to clean and dry the house. Clk
Documentary is a story telling which includes the point of view of the film maker at the opposite of the film record . clk
So it needs a writing ,a scenario clk
And finally in a documentary we will find characters who can be real people or actors .
let’s have a look to the second parent the web .The subject is so wide that we could speak hours about web but we just focus on two points the first one is about active attitude clk
In contrary to a people who watch a film in a cinema and has not possibility to interact with the film on the web it is possible to interact with the video
.and in a second point with the web we have the possibility of navigate with hyper links .
So to resume we have two formats the documentary and the web who gives birth to a new format : the webdocumentary
The web documentary is a new kind of documentary because in a documentary the sequences are following each other . .clk
The navigation is different in a web documentary .
Scenario /navigation
In a web documentary the spectator can jump from one sequence to another without being a prisoner of the order of the sequences .
He can watch what it is interesting for him because the web documentary is not linear .clk
It is an important point if the navigation through the sequences is not linear anymore so during the design of the web documentary you have to define a navigation. Clk
Concerning the Point of view
Like in a documentary , in a web documentary the film maker can give his point of view
Characters
In the same way there are also characters in a web documentary
Now have a look with the comparison with a web site
Multimedia
in a web documentary you can find texts but in a general way majority of content are images (animated or not )
There are also sounds , it is fully different of a website.
In a website the base is often the text
Immersive
Another difference with a website :
The web documentary is immersive and will try to keep the spectator inside
Active attitiude
As the spectator chooses what he wants to watch and he has an active attitude its creates binding process which is favorable to the learning
Adaptability to level
In the same way the spectator can choose the content adapted to his own level and avoid the content to much complex or to easy
Now that we have seen what is a webdocumentary , let’s look how to do a web documentary ..
As we have seen before a web documentary and a documentary are composed of sequences
In a documentary sequences are following each other
But in a web documentary we have to define a navigation between the sequences .
I suggest to see through existing webdocumentaries how the navigation is done
To illustrate the characteristics of a web documentary I will present some documentaries
The first web documentary I will present is dom loupvent. It is about a travel , a pilgrimage of a monk from Lorraine to Jerusalem in the middle age.
The story is based on the notes of the monk during the travel
The navigation in the web documentary is done through the map at each stage on the map you can click and watch sequences .
The second web documentary is about a research laboratory at universite de Lorraine ,.
The navigation is done through the researchers who are present in the image . When you click on the people it opens sequences .
The third web documentary les murs de la casbah is about a quarter of alger : the casbah
The navigation is done through the map of the places, when you click on one place its opens a sequence .
In addition to the navigation the reader can watch the web documentary according several entries :
venues
personnages
timeline
Path
themes
For example this web documentary on the British culture .
The reader can navigate inside by themes (railway , history or geography )
The reader can also navigate with a railway map .
In this web documentary on two cities one is in the territory of Gaza and another just behind the bounder in Israel Sderot .
There are four possibilities to navigate . The line in the middle symbolise the bounder on the left there are the people from Gaza and on the right the people from Sderot .
When you click on people you open a sequence .
But you can switch the entries and navigate through the places or through a timeline or with themes
And finally there are several tools used to make web documentary , there are not tools of montage .
We at universite de Loraine used mainly Klynt , it is not a free tool but it is not too much expansive.
I will let the speech to my colleague who will speak about the use of a web documentary in pedagogy.
