Policy Research
4. Pure, Basic, Fundamental Research
Knowledge for knowledge sake
No concern about any practical social use
Scientist curiosity, Scientific question
Example
How did the universe begin ?
5. Applied or Operational Research
Seeks to solve practical problems
Used to find solution to everyday problem
Applicable for functional and immediate use
Example
Improve agricultural crop production
Improve the energy efficiency
6. Exploratory Research
Explanatory research is conducted for a problem
that has not been clearly defined.
• Develop a general understanding and common
familiarity.
• Forms new ideas and to achieve new insight.
• Formulation of further research hypothesis. and
• Examines the entire structure of the problem
• Supplies the needed knowledge and experience .
Example: students suicide.
7. Explanatory Research
• Find out why things are as they are.
• Purpose : examine the existing relationship of the
variables.
• It is also known as causal studies.
• Example: patient satisfaction.
8. Experimental Research
Experimental research is an objective, systematic,
controlled investigation for the purpose of predicting and
controlling phenomena and examining probability and
causality among selected variables.
• It is required to test a hypothesis or to document the
expected results of introduction of a specific
intervention.
9. Relational Research
• Relational research looks at the relationships between
two or more variables.
• Example: Election procedure between Male and
Female.
10. Evaluation Research
• Designed to evaluate projects, program or action
package.
• Objective- to assess the consequences of activities
undertaken to advance some valued goals.
• Result - is not meant merely to add to our store of
knowledge or develop theory.
• Determine the production of undesired effects.
• It is often sought by organizations, agencies.
• It is used as a scientific feedback mechanism
11. Descriptive Research
Descriptive/Statistical research refers to research that
provides an accurate portrayal of characteristics of a
particular individual, situation, or group.
• Designed to describe what is going on or what exists.
• Carried out to portray accurately the characteristics
of groups, individuals, or situations and so on.
• Provides necessary background for the formulation of
more precise problems
• Provide detailed and highly decorated picture and
locate new data.
• Categories and clarifies sequence of steps
12. Policy Research
Directed at policy makers with the options and
information.
process of conducting research on and analysis of
fundamental social problems.
unique in focusing action oriented recommendations
to fundamental problems.
performed by the policy planners, political scientists,
and policy analysts.
There are some characteristics of policy research.
