Wellsite & Operations Geologist Experience
2014 – Present
Abu Dhabi UAE Senior Operations Geologist for Al Hosn Gas.
After completion of drilling phase 1 at the Shah field, Al Hosn gas continued drilling in the UAE,
doing a number of wells for ADCO in the Bab field (including a complex tri-lateral targeting
three different formation units in the Thamama group) and ADNOC (complex horizontal wells in
the Arab formation, unconventional wells (Shilaif & Araej) and offshore gas wells to the Khuff
and Uweinat formations). Operations included challenging coring and logging programs.
Currently drilling last well prior to the drilling and geological operations teams being disbanded.
2011 – 2014
Abu Dhabi UAE Senior Operations Geologist for Al Hosn Gas.
Worked on the development of the Shah Sour Gas Field from start to finish. Working mainly in
an office environment with frequent trips to the field when required. The Shah field wells
targeted the Arab formation with horizontal sections in the Arab C & D. Locally overpressured
formations, and up to 26% H2S. Responsibilities include supervision of field staff, geosteering
(both at wellsite and from office), picking casing points, coring points & formation tops, landing
wells, producing logs with GEO software, well design using Petrel software, liaising with drilling
departments with regard to operational and logistical matters (call out of mudlogging and wireline
logging services, coring etc). Attending daily drilling meetings, visiting service company bases for
auditing purposes. Compilation and distribution of daily and end of well reports. Supervision and
quality control of both LWD and (TLC) wireline logging, (together with petrophysicist). Working
with both Baker and Schlumberger LWD. Interpretation of image logs. Working 28 day rotation
as the job has 24/7 responsibility.
The Shah drilling phase was completed well ahead of schedule and substantially under-budget.
Production figures exceeded expectations, at least in part due to well design and placement.

2. 1998 – 2011
Norway Wellsite Geologist for DONG
Working on a high angle exploration well in carbonate formations in the Norwegian
North Sea, using GEO software, geosteering, picking formation tops and casing points,
working with micropalaeontologists, producing daily and end of well reports.
Syria Wellsite Geologist for Maurel & Prom
A standard 24 hour wellsite job on an exploration / wildcat well into carbonate and evaporite
formations on land, responsibilities including casing and formation picks, producing composite
logs using Winlog, supervising mudlogging and LWD, distributing reports and writing morning
reports and FWR and liaison between wellsite crews, and drilling personel in town. There was no
operations geology for this job, so the normal responsibilities of the operations geologist were
taken on by the wellsite geologist.
Qatar Wellsite Geologist for RasGas (again)
Worked onshore on high angle water injection geosteered well. Drilled one horizontal wells in
porous limestone formations for the disposal of contaminated waste water from Ras Laffan
Industrial City.
Angola Wellsite Geologist for Maersk
A standard 24 hour wellsite conditions on an exploration well into clastic (turbidite) formations
on a deep water drillship, responsibilities included casing and formation picks, producing
composite logs using GEO, supervising mudlogging and LWD, distributing reports and writing
morning reports and FWR and liaison between Wellsite crews, operations geologist and clients on
shore.
Abu Dhabi UAE Wellsite/Operations Geologist for Total ABK (again).
Landing and steering of drains in thin carbonate formations with LWD (Schlumberger Telescope,
Ecoscope and Stethoscope or Weatherford Triple Combo tools), TLC logging (Mostly FMI and
XPT). Also worked in the office preparing end of well reports and logs using the HRH Gravitas
software, filling in for the operations geologist when necessary, mobilising logging tools and
liaising with service companies concerning transport of personnel and materials, and doing some
preparation work for new wells.
Qatar Wellsite Geologist for RasGas
Worked onshore on high angle water injection geosteered wells. Drilled two horizontal wells in
porous limestone formations for the disposal of contaminated waste water from Ras Laffan
Industrial City. This involved use Schlumberger LWD tools (Telescope, Ecoscope and
Stethoscope) plus extensive coring and WL logging programs. The second well was actively
geosteered. As a prerequisite for working with RasGas, a 4 day course on "Safety for team
leaders" was attended before the start of the job.
UK Wellsite Geologist for Maersk.
Offshore operations on a HPHT with biosteering, drilling exclusively in carbonate formations.
Using Geo to produce logs. Taking pressure readings using both Schlumberger WL and Baker
LWD sampling tools.
Abu Dhabi UAE Wellsite/operations Geologist for Total ABK
Page 2 Maxim William Sommers January 2017
3. Operations in the office including preparing well reports and logs using HRH's Gravitas/Winlog
software, attending drilling meetings, organizing crew changes and tool mobilisation,
preparing information needed for geosteering, carrying out various projects such as an exhaustive
cost analysis and comparison project for all the wells previously drilled in the mature Abu Al
Bukhoosh Field for which data were still available, and assisting in the production of maps of
GWD (gas whilst drilling) for both the Thamama and Arab formations, a little well planning, and
the (very basic) use of Geolog6 software. Standing in for operations geologist as required.
In addition, participated in some training course, notably "Cause Tree Analysis" which is
concerned with the analysis and prevention of undesirable incidents.
In 2005, participated in a 4 day field study in Oman, organised through the university of
Bordeaux, looking at a region where some of the main formations drilled at ABK were observable
as onshore outcrops.
Offshore operations working on 6" horizontal drains. Complex geosteering, with well paths often
steered into as many as three different reservoir zones & anti-collision issues, usually in the Arab
formations (Carbonates & evaporates), often requiring very precise landing in formations no more
than 2, thick. LWD services provided by both Schlumberger & Weatherford. Short duration
wells, usually only one geologist is on the rig throughout the drilling.
Numerous extensive pipe-conveyed wireline operations including sampling in formations with
high risk of differential sticking.
Yemen Wellsite Geologist for Total
Worked on a fractured basement well in Block 10, onshore Yemen. Involved onsite manufacture
and analysis of thin sections. Otherwise, normal job – wireline supervision, casing points etc.
Algeria Geologist for Anadarko
Worked on up hole program at seismic camp. Apart from geological role, considerably
involved in logistics concerning getting small, truck mounted rigs to the desired locations in
difficult terrain (sand dunes up to 100m high).
Kuwait Wellsite Geologist for BP/KOC
Exploration well in fractured carbonate reservoir. Project to attempt to correlate minor mud
losses with fractured zones.
Qatar Wellsite Geologist for Maersk.
Wellsite Geologist on horizontal geosteered development wells in carbonate (Shuaiba & Kharaib)
and Clastic (Nahr Umr). Horizontal hole sections up to 10km long with extremely high ROPs.
Usually using Schlumberger LWD & RSS.
Equatorial Guinea Wellsite Geologist for CMS.
Worked on a high angle development well in clastic formations for CMS.
Denmark Wellsite Geologist for Maersk.
Worked on high angle geosteered development wells in chalk. Commonly involved
biosteering, working with both micro and nano-palaeontologists.
Oman Wellsite Geologist for Japex, Phillips & Maersk
Vertical exploration wells in deep clastic reservoirs.
