This document outlines Matthew Kimmins' idea for a magazine about grassroots football. The magazine, called "Off The Bar", will feature an interview and article discussing whether local grassroots football clubs are still relevant to their communities, using the local Lydiate Lynx team as an example. Social media, particularly Instagram and Twitter, will be used to market the magazine. The planned layout includes a masthead, banner, cover lines, and images on the front cover. The double page spread layout features a large main image, banner with the article title, and text space for a 600+ word article and accompanying image. The idea fits the brief of focusing on inclusion and community through discussing the relevance of grassroots football.
2. WHAT IS MY IDEA?
• I intend on creating a magazine on the topic of Grassroots football.
• Within, I will use an interview and my own knowledge to discuss whether
local, Grassroots football clubs are still relevant to the community.
• My local team, named the Lydiate Lynx, will be used as an example to
base my article upon.
3. HOW WILL IT BE
MARKETED?
• Social media will be my main
form of advertising.
• I will primarily use Instagram
and Twitter as these have
some nifty features that will
come in handy; such as
being able to go ‘trending’
and to appear on ‘explore’
pages.
4. MY PLANNED LAYOUT- FRONT COVER
Masthead- this will have the title inside and the
magazines logo. I have gone for the name ‘Off The
Bar’ as it is a commonly used term used in football
(the subject of the magazine), often used in
exciting circumstances (connotes fun and
excitement).
Banner- this will state some of the things the reader
is to be able to expect to be in the magazine. I have
chosen for this to be in a banner so that it stands out
more.
Anchorage text- this is to influence the
readers expectation of the article and
to make it more appealing. It can
influence the readers perception of the
image below it.
Cover lines- these will be on the
bottom left of the front cover as this a
common convention in magazines.
They will be used to describe the
magazines content, making it seem
interesting and appealing to the
reader.
Main image- this will be football related to make
sure the magazines theme is recognisable at first
glance. It will be right in the middle to make it the
focal point of the magazine. This is because the
main image is vital to a magazines aesthetic.
Barcode- this is a legal requirement and is
commonly found in the bottom right of a
magazine cover, adding familiarity to my
magazine.
My magazine
cover is quite
formally laid out
so the format is
easily
recognisable and
familiar to the
reader.
5. MY PLANNED LAYOUT- DOUBLE PAGE
SPREAD
Main image- once again this
will be related to football
but more so to the article as
this image has to be able to
accompany the article well. It
will be the only component
of this page and will have to
be of a high quality to
impress the reader and to
give the magazine a
professional look/feel.
Banner- this will hold the title of
the article. I will specifically place
this in a banner to help it stand
out and to draw focus onto the
article, instead of just the image
on the page next to it.
Space for text– in this space I will
have the article. It will consist be
around 600 words or over and
may not need all this space. If this
is the case then the layout may
change slightly.
Image- this may be an image of
the person I interviewed or of
the team I will use in the article
to discuss the topic (the Lydiate
Lynx).
My double page
spread is still quite
traditional but a lot
less formal
compared to the
front cover. This is
to make sure the
magazine is still
interesting and
because I believe the
large image on the
left will suitably
compliment the
article on the right.
6. HOW DOES MY IDEA FIT THE BRIEF?
• My idea is one of “inclusion and community” due to me basing my
article upon the relevance of a communal activity such as Grassroots
football to the people living in the local area.
• By carrying out my idea of a magazine with an article within, I am
meeting the second part of the brief that makes it clear that a magazine
must be created.
We have been asked to produce a contribution to the Sixth Form Media
exhibition in the Summer term. It has to relate to this years theme of
inclusion and community.
We need to make a magazine consisting of a front cover and a double
page spread.
The brief:
Hinweis der Redaktion
I will discuss whether people are still attending training sessions or going to support the team at matches from people who live in the area, discovering if the club has had support recently (such as over the past few years) or if the local community are just not turning up. If the latter is the case, then during my interview, I will ask for my interviewee to share their opinion on why support may be decreasing/lacking and enquire about whether the team has ever received support from those who live in the surrounding areas.
To promote my magazine, I could use social media as our target age group (8-40) are known to be at ranging levels of activity on social media. The younger side of this being very active and the older side known to be quite active, but not to the same level. Another reason why I would be using social media is because it’s free, meaning even if it wasn’t effective it wouldn’t harm our budget. Accounts could be set up on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Snapchat to countdown to the release of the magazine to create hype around it. Facebook will be used as the average use age in the UK is 18-34 years old (source- http://smallbusiness.chron.com/breakdown-facebook-users-age-63280.html), this is a large percentage of my target audience so I could find a considerable amount of viewers on this website. The reason around using Twitter is that it’s great for keeping people with short, quick updates on production and release date, or any other information surrounding the documentary. Instagram could also be used to quickly update my potential audience with images from my magazine. All three of these accounts could then all promote the snapchat account which would update potential viewers on a more frequent and personal level. Using social media would help us reach a much wider target audience than anything else as it’s available to anyone with an internet connection.
My double page spread will include the article on one of the pages, with an image on the other, this is to make the magazine more interesting as just text could potentially be boring and is to make the the magazine more aesthetically pleasing.
