Physical activity and mental (w)health
2. Parity of esteem?
“the principle by which mental health
must be given equal priority to physical
health”
“No health without mental health”
3. Why does it matter?
Two main reasons
1) If you already have a mental health problem,
2x more likely to have heart disease, 4x more
likely to die from respiratory disease, if you have
schizophrenia or bipolar more likely to die 10-17
years earlier due to diet, exercise and social
conditions
4. Why does it matter?
2) Being physically active can help to build
resilience and contribute to our mental
wellbeing, even if we are living with a long-term
condition.
NB: these are not the only reasons – we’ll come
back to these!
5. The Five Year Forward View for
Mental Health
• Nine out of ten adults with mental health
problems are supported in primary care
Many people discussed the importance of
addressing the wider determinants of mental
health, such as good quality housing, debt,
poverty, employment, education, access to
green space and tough life experiences such as
abuse, bullying and bereavement.
