Jawaharlal Nehru’s Philosophy on different issues (Politics, Culture,
Education, Religion, Freedom, Economic reform, Development etc)

Nehru’s Philosophy: He is a spokesman for humanity. He is a rationalist and moralist.
Nehru’s Weltanschauung (Worldviews): Nehru views economic, social problems, world peace and
freedom from a global angle. He sees today’s problems as world problems
that can be solved only at a global level.

Freedom: “….prefer to die rather than lose their freedom, and those who are prepared
to die for any cause are seldom defeated”. “At the stroke of the midnight hour,
when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom”.

Political Views: Democrat- Socialist. To establish true
Source: Google.com democracy, to eliminate inequality & injustice, where people can enjoy political
freedom and economic security, he does not think it is enough to vote for a few nice people or
remove some bad politicians. However, it is important to transform the entire economic system.
“ Some people… think that if good people would but get together they
could convert the wicked by moral exhortations and pointing out to them the error of
their ways. This is a very misleading idea, for the fault does not lie with individuals, but with a
                     wrong system”.

Economic reform: Nehru feels that social ills, which are economically
determined, must be economically cured. His solution is to transform the
whole economic system (“such a solution can only mean the ending of poverty and
misery everywhere. This may take a long time, but we must
aim at this, and at nothing less than this”.) For economic growth, Nehru felt that
people need to work together as a group, as a society for the good of all.

Jawaharlal Nehru’s Philosophy on some different issues (Politics,
     Education, Religion, Freedom Cont’d)

Development: “Made in India” clothes/textiles protest against British clothing (e.g. designed by
Nehru himself-the Nehru Jacket and cap that was worn by him at all times and is still worn today
by men, boys and the youth in India). He believed that the way to develop, grow and sustain a
civilization is to innovate (“Made in India” concept) to prevent stagnation and decay/death of a
                                  society, culture and civilization.

Culture: “Cultures generally, are monopolies of the well-to-do classes”. “Poetry and culture have
little place in a poor man’s hut; they are not meant for empty stomachs”. Nehru views the ending
of poverty and misery everywhere as the attainment of real culture & civilization based on equality,
and where there is no exploitation of any country or class.

Education: English Education (the new Bourgeoisie- English Educated Middle Class, a great
majority of who were Hindus grew in cities from which arose lawyers, doctors, merchants, traders)
Nehru in the Nehru Jacket & Cap was the key to improved economic condition at the time of the British, Nehru’s Era and still is,

valued today in Indian Society. Today, English and Hindi are the official languages of India.

Religion: He views religion as a big industry. “In every religion this is so Hinduism, Christianity,
Islam, Zoroastrianism. Each has its own method of making money out of the faith of the faithful”.

He was not worried about the after life as most religions of today teach. He states that religion’s
Jalebi. (Indian Sweet) promises of “heaven or paradise or whatever it may be called”, is like the child that behaves itself
“in the hope of being rewarded with a jam puff or a Jalebi”. Adults who behave in such manner,
must be considered childish. “For, after all, there is no essential difference between the jam puff
                                  and paradise”

Although Nehru was an Aetheist, in his last will & testament, he requested to be cremated as per
Hindu rites and his ashes spread all over India (from the Himalaya’s, to the Ganges, to the
Farmlands of India). He believed and fought for a Secular India (India for all religions).

Please remember that, we as individuals and a society all have a duty to a child

  • 7. Jawaharlal Nehru’s Philosophy on different issues (Politics, Culture, Education, Religion, Freedom, Economic reform, Development etc) Nehru’s Philosophy: He is a spokesman for humanity. He is a rationalist and moralist. Nehru’s Weltanschauung (Worldviews): Nehru views economic, social problems, world peace and freedom from a global angle. He sees today’s problems as world problems that can be solved only at a global level. Freedom: “….prefer to die rather than lose their freedom, and those who are prepared to die for any cause are seldom defeated”. “At the stroke of the midnight hour, when the world sleeps, India will awake to life and freedom”. Political Views: Democrat- Socialist. To establish true Source: Google.com democracy, to eliminate inequality & injustice, where people can enjoy political freedom and economic security, he does not think it is enough to vote for a few nice people or remove some bad politicians. However, it is important to transform the entire economic system. “ Some people… think that if good people would but get together they could convert the wicked by moral exhortations and pointing out to them the error of their ways. This is a very misleading idea, for the fault does not lie with individuals, but with a wrong system”. Economic reform: Nehru feels that social ills, which are economically determined, must be economically cured. His solution is to transform the whole economic system (“such a solution can only mean the ending of poverty and misery everywhere. This may take a long time, but we must aim at this, and at nothing less than this”.) For economic growth, Nehru felt that people need to work together as a group, as a society for the good of all. Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru, MD, MPH, MBA, PhD
  • 8. Jawaharlal Nehru’s Philosophy on some different issues (Politics, Education, Religion, Freedom Cont’d) Development: “Made in India” clothes/textiles protest against British clothing (e.g. designed by Nehru himself-the Nehru Jacket and cap that was worn by him at all times and is still worn today by men, boys and the youth in India). He believed that the way to develop, grow and sustain a civilization is to innovate (“Made in India” concept) to prevent stagnation and decay/death of a society, culture and civilization. Culture: “Cultures generally, are monopolies of the well-to-do classes”. “Poetry and culture have little place in a poor man’s hut; they are not meant for empty stomachs”. Nehru views the ending of poverty and misery everywhere as the attainment of real culture & civilization based on equality, and where there is no exploitation of any country or class. Education: English Education (the new Bourgeoisie- English Educated Middle Class, a great majority of who were Hindus grew in cities from which arose lawyers, doctors, merchants, traders) Nehru in the Nehru Jacket & Cap was the key to improved economic condition at the time of the British, Nehru’s Era and still is, Source: Google.com which led to government and professional jobs. The English language & Convent education is still valued today in Indian Society. Today, English and Hindi are the official languages of India. Religion: He views religion as a big industry. “In every religion this is so Hinduism, Christianity, Islam, Zoroastrianism. Each has its own method of making money out of the faith of the faithful”. He was not worried about the after life as most religions of today teach. He states that religion’s Jalebi. (Indian Sweet) promises of “heaven or paradise or whatever it may be called”, is like the child that behaves itself “in the hope of being rewarded with a jam puff or a Jalebi”. Adults who behave in such manner, must be considered childish. “For, after all, there is no essential difference between the jam puff and paradise” Although Nehru was an Aetheist, in his last will & testament, he requested to be cremated as per Hindu rites and his ashes spread all over India (from the Himalaya’s, to the Ganges, to the Farmlands of India). He believed and fought for a Secular India (India for all religions). Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru, MD, MPH, MBA, PhD
  • 9. Nehru knew to “talk the talk” and “walk the walk” . His British education was an asset in gaining the independence of India. Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru, MD, MPH, MBA, PhD
  • 10. “India is Some Famous Jawaharlal Nehru Quotes industrially more “We must constantly remind ourselves that whatever our religion or creed, we are all developed than one people”. many less fortunate “I have become a queer mixture of the East and the West ... Out of place everywhere, at countries”…. home nowhere”. “But this arithmetical “Every little thing counts in a crisis and we want our weight felt and our voice heard in distinction cannot quarters which are for the avoidance of world conflict”. conceal the poverty of the “Without peace, all other dreams vanish and are reduced to ashes”. “Peace is not only great majority of an absolute necessity for us in India in order to progress and develop but also of our people. To remove this paramount importance to the world”. poverty by greater production, more “Democracy and socialism are means to an end, not the end itself”. equitable distribution, better “Freedom and power bring responsibility”. education and “Where freedom is menaced or justice threatened or where aggression takes place, we better health, is cannot be and shall not be neutral”. the paramount need and the most pressing task “Most of us seldom take the trouble to think”. before us and we are determined to “Culture is the widening of the mind and of the spirit. It is never a narrowing of the mind accomplish this or a restriction of the human spirit or the country's spirit”. task”. “Religion is not familiar ground for me, and as I have grown older, I have definitely drifted away from it. I have something else in its place, something older than just intellect and reason, which gives me strength and hope”. “Because we have sought to cover up past evil, though it still persists, we have been powerless to check the new evil of today”. “Evil unchecked grows, Evil tolerated poisons the whole system”. “Ultimately what we really are matters more than what other people think of us” Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru, MD, MPH, MBA, PhD
  • 11. Chacha Nehru’s Message to the Children & Youth “To the Youth of the Country, I would make a special appeal for they are the leaders of tommorrow and on them will be cast the burden of upholding India’s honour and freedom” ------ Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru The Nehru’s Love India, and will continue to fight for her. One Nehru might go, another one will emerge from the dust/ashes of India. ------Dr.Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru, MD, MPH, MBA, PhD
  • 12. What is the Importance & Meaning of Children’s Day? Is Children’s day important and celebrated in India because of Jawaharlal Nehru’s Birthday? Is it important & celebrated because a child placed a rose on Jawaharlal Nehru? My request to all Indians is to love children who are born in wedlock (bastard), Some disabled, poor/disadvantaged, born with a birth defect, the fatherless just like a Bastards/Adopted child who is born under normal circumstances to a loving family, otherwise what Children who have is the purpose of Children’s day? If India can embrace a more free culture as made significant portrayed in Bollywood movies today, and use technologies and products contributions to the produced by bastards from other countries (e.g. Apple Inc. products by Late Mr. World Steve Jobs who is a bastard) can’t she embrace her own children/bastards/orphans? 1) Isabel SwamiKannu Stop casting children away as bastards or as a black mark/ill omen on the family (“Shraddha Mata”) or society. Do not be ashamed of them. They will one day make you and India proud. Give them a chance to live, grow and prove themselves. 2) Arun Nehru (Mr.K.K.Dominic) So think before you give them up for adoption, or leave them in hospitals, orphanages, convents, desert them on the street or drive them out from their 3) Leonardo Da Vinci own homes/ parents, families and India. Do not adopt a child today with the anticipation that the child will one day bring you lot of money (by the child 4) Confucius working, when he/she grows up or through inheritance) or will be there for you in old age, but only with a sincere heart and if you can truly provide a loving home 5) Steve Job for that child. If he/she enquires about his biological parents/family and you as an adopted parent/relative know about them, tell them who they are and under what circumstances they were adopted. This will help the child know where they are coming from, it will help them know their family history, their biological parent’s occupation, their family health history, to realize their true potential which are all important for the child’s well being & India’s welfare. Please remember that, we as individuals and a society all have a duty to a child and to support their families the moment we knowingly or accidently decide to bring a child into this world.----------Dr. Janu Dominic SwamiKannu Nehru

  8. India must be proud of it’s culture and not take for granted the freedom it enjoys today. There is definitely a culture shift, from Nehru’s era, where India had a more conservative culture to current day, where a free/modern culture is being portrayed tothe world through Bollywood movies, songs and dances. However, this portrayal of India with a modern culture is deceptive, as Indians have a very deep traditional conservative culture, which is rooted in its past and all religions including Hinduism. Educationis needed for improving the socio-economic conditions of the people.------- Dr. Janu DominicSwamiKannu Nehru
