  19. WHAT IS SCREENING? • SCREENING: • Test or examination performed on someone without signs or symptoms • Done on a “NORMAL PERSON” • GOAL OF SCREENING: • To prevent death or suffering from the disease through early detection and treatment

  21. BREAST CANCER SCREENING • Mammography for women ≥ 40 years old every year
  22. CERVICAL CANCER SCREENING • PAP SMEAR starting age 21 then repeat every 3 years
  23. COLON AND RECTAL CANCER SCREENING • COLONOSCOPY starting age 45 years old every 10 years or • High sensitivity FECAL OCCULT BLOOD TEST starting age 45 years old yearly
  24. LUNG CANCER SCREENING • Low-dose CT scan • Men and women 55-74 years old • Smoking for 30 years or more
  25. PROSTATE CANCER SCREENING • Men starting age 50 yrs old • Blood exam with Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) • Digital Rectal Exam (DRE)
  26. VACCINES AGAINST CANCER
  27. Hepatitis B Vaccine • Prevents liver cancer caused by the Hepatitis B virus • Now routinely given to infants at birth • 3 doses in a 6-month period
  28. Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) Vaccine • Commonly called “CERVICAL CANCER” vaccine • Prevents development of genital warts • Prevents some forms of head and neck cancers • Start vaccination at age 11- 12 years old
