Last meeting we discussed about prefix.
Prefix a letter or group of letters that is
added at the beginning of a word to
change its meaning.
That’s right! Do you have any question or
clarification regarding our last topic?
Let’s now proceed to our new lesson.
B. Exploratory
Are you familiar with the game 4 pics 1
word?
So the mechanics of the game is, you
have to work out the word from the set of
letters given. The four pictures are linked
by one word.
Now observe these four pictures and
raise your hand if you already know the
answer.
Jean what’s your answer?
Very good, the answer is power, so what
comes to your mind when you hear the
word power?
So power is the ability to make things
happen.
Are you familiar to this sound?
So what it is?
Excellent! The sound effects from the TV
show the Enchantadia.
Who are the characters?
Underneath- The ball rolled underneath
the car.
None Ma’am.
Yes Ma’am
Power ma’am.
Strength, force, energy, might etc.
(sound effects playing)
Yes ma’am.
Ma’am Enchantadia sound effects.
Very good, they possessed different kinds
of power.
If you will be given a chance to possess a
power, what it is? And why?
That’s great! The power of love has the
ability to transform an ordinary moment
into something magical.
We therefore conclude that in order to do
something better, certain power is
necessary.
After his activity what do you think our
topic is all about?
Very good, our lesson for today is entitled
“The Powerless Rich Man” in pages 266-

Ma’am Amihan, Danaya, Alena and
Pirena.
If I will be given a chance to possess a
power, I want to have the power of love
because there is no greater power than
love. Love has the ability to heal the world.

E. Firm-up
Our story is entitled?
The author of the story is Carmelita Emilia
D. Isidro also known as CEDI. She
conceptualized the book of Growth Project
Conquer Life with English and Literature.
There’s insufficient information about the
author.
Again, who is the author?
Okay class, you are expected to
appreciate the selection, you need to act
to guess the word from the story and
compare the characters life.
But before that we have to follow certain
standard in listening. What are these
standards?
Now class sits properly. The second?
We have to listen carefully in order to hear
the story clearly. And the last one?
As you listen to the story you have to
absorb the information especially the
important one.
Are you ready to listen?
(Playing voice record)
The Powerless Rich Man by CEDI
Carmelita Emilia D. Isidro
1. Sit properly.
2. Listen carefully
3. Comprehend
Yes ma’am.
F. Deepen

possesses?
Very good, the rich man possessed
everything he needs such as servants,
food garments, shoes, jewelries, home
and entertainment.
Why was he not happy?
Despite of all the rich man was not happy
because every day is the same for him, no

Yes, the rich man never sweats nor
experiences the scarcity in life.
Why is the average man worried?
Very good, the average man is worried
because the rich man did not even touch
his food and he is afraid to lose his job so
he prepared something different on his
food.
Why did the rich man bother to visit the
kitchen?
Very good, He visits the kitchen to find out
The rich man possessed everything.
He was not happy because he doesn’t
experience hardship and struggles.
Life is too easy for him because he never
experience scarcity in life.
He is worried for the rich man because the
food he cocked was not eaten at all.
He visits the kitchen to find out who was
cooking his food.
who was cooking his food and to tell him
that the food is the worst.
After he met the average man what did he
realize?
After he encountered the average man, he
realized that he has many things to do
about the material he possessed.
G. Generalization
What lesson did you learn from the story?
Very good, in order to do something better,
certain power is necessary.
Although he rich man possessed
everything he needs he still considered
him powerless because he don’t know how
to value the things he have, he waste a lot
of time just sitting in his room.
So if you will be given a chance to go back
to your past and correct your mistakes.
What is that mistake and what will you do?
He realized that he has so many things to
do about the material he possessed.
We should know how to value the things
we have and don’t waste a time just sitting
and not knowing anything in life.
If I will be given a chance to turn the past, I
want to go back when the time my
grandmother died because that day I left
the house because my classmates visited
me and I was shocked when I came back
she already left me that’s the biggest
mistake I did to my entire life.
H. Application
Now, let us have an activity. It is called
charade.
We need two volunteers that will act and
the members should guess the words that
the leaders will act.
The group that could guess with the
fastest time is the winner. (Maximum of 3
minutes.)  writing
 cooking
 eating
 happy
 chicken soup
 rich
 afraid
 sad

V. Assignment
Read the selection “Perfect Heart” in page 253 and list 5 vocabulary words.
“The Powerless Rich Man”
In the confines of his lavish room and in the midst of all the servants, the rich
man couldn't sleep. He had been thinking about what he possessed- all of which made
him powerless.
He was never hungry for he had chefs to cook any food he desires; he had a
grand pantry of all goods he needed in the kitchen; he owned hundreds of garments
and pairs of shoes; he listened to live orchestras; he had jewelries so fine and dear; and
most of all, he had the biggest house in the land.
But with all those things, the rich man was not happy at all. He didn't know how
much money he had because his accountant takes care of it; he never know how to
cook and more so, where to get the food ; his size and measurement were taken by the
tailor and shoemaker; His grandparents gave his house so he never knew how to build
one.
Life is too easy for the rich man, who never sweats nor experienced the scarcity
in life. He was spoon fed and given all the luxuries. The things that most people would
dream of. But to the rich man, every day is the same- no struggle, no hardship, and
nothing to compete with.
He sat all alone in his quiet room. No challenge at all for his servants never
asked him to go anywhere or do anything. He was not in the kitchen to watch how the
food was cooked; he was never in parlor to look at the design of his clothes; He never
counted his money and wonder how much is in the bank.
"What good are all these things?" He said, "I didn't even enjoy what I have." The
rich man sighed with discontent and sat again in his gloomy room.
In a faraway land, there lived an average man. He worked eight hours a day and
lived in cozy, happy and sweet home. He's got an average life and a perfect family.
They all know the value of the little money they had by counting and allotting each
penny for what they need. The food that they are about to eat is just enough to feed
each one, so they thank God for it, and left nothing in the pan. Everything is average,
but life is exciting for this average man.
One day, this man went to his work. He cooked for the rich man; his good at it.
But somehow, he noticed for the past week, most of his dishes were not even touch by
his master. For a while, he thought he did not like his cooking anymore. Afraid to lose
his, he found a way to talk to his master.
The average man took a piece of paper in which he wrote, “Enjoy your meal, sir!"
and placed it on the serving tray, hoping hid master would read it. Then, later in the
afternoon, the tray was sent back to the kitchen and the food wasn't eaten at all. The
piece of paper was still there. The next morning, the average man prepared another
breakfast for his master. Again, he took a piece of paper in which he wrote, “Good
morning sir, enjoy your breakfast." Then later on, the tray went back to the kitchen and
no food was eaten at all.
The average man was very worried the, and for the last time, he prepared
something different - a soup without vegetable and meat, mashed potatoes without milk,
and fried chicken that was not properly cooked. Then he took a piece of paper in which
he wrote, "Enjoy your greatest meal sir!" Later, the letter was sent back to the kitchen
and much to the average man's surprise, part of the food was eaten and the piece of the
paper came back with the note at the back, “Your soup is bland and bare, your mashed
potatoes don't have milk and you chicken is raw!"
The following day, the average man cooks different meal for his master. This
time, he prepared a vegetable salad without any dressing, chicken soup with chicken's
feet and candy for dessert. When the man saw the tray later, he was shocked to find the
food was all eaten and the piece of paper came back that said, “You need dressing in
your salad, more salt in your soup and pastries for dessert!" When the man read the
note, he smiled and made his way back to the kitchen. The rich man said, "Who is
cooking my food? The man replied," It is I sir." "You see," the rich man continued, "your
food is worst!"
Upon hearing that, the average man started to explain, “Tell me master how to
cook better, for you know better than I do." Then, he began to show the rich man around
the kitchen.
"How nice of you to come to see me?" said the average man, "Now show me
how you want the food to taste."
Then the rich man showed the average man’s how to make soup, mashed
potato, fried chicken and many more. During that time, The rich man learned to use the
pantry and memorized its content. He likewise learned how to appreciate food And how
to prepare them. Soon, the rich man started to wonder how to appreciate food and hoe
to prepare then. Soon, the rich man started to wonder how his clothes and shoes were
made. so he visited his tailor and they talked. He called his accountant and discussed
about money. And his room became lively and busy since then he always called on his
servants to ask what is going on around the house. Everything now is under his control.
That made the rich man a powerful man.

Very good, in order to do something better, certain power is necessary. Although he rich man possessed everything he needs he still considered him powerless because he don’t know how to value the things he have, he waste a lot of time just sitting in his room. So if you will be given a chance to go back to your past and correct your mistakes. What is that mistake and what will you do? He realized that he has so many things to do about the material he possessed. We should know how to value the things we have and don’t waste a time just sitting and not knowing anything in life. • 12. “The Powerless Rich Man” In the confines of his lavish room and in the midst of all the servants, the rich man couldn't sleep. He had been thinking about what he possessed- all of which made him powerless. He was never hungry for he had chefs to cook any food he desires; he had a grand pantry of all goods he needed in the kitchen; he owned hundreds of garments and pairs of shoes; he listened to live orchestras; he had jewelries so fine and dear; and most of all, he had the biggest house in the land. But with all those things, the rich man was not happy at all. He didn't know how much money he had because his accountant takes care of it; he never know how to cook and more so, where to get the food ; his size and measurement were taken by the tailor and shoemaker; His grandparents gave his house so he never knew how to build one. Life is too easy for the rich man, who never sweats nor experienced the scarcity in life. He was spoon fed and given all the luxuries. The things that most people would dream of. But to the rich man, every day is the same- no struggle, no hardship, and nothing to compete with. He sat all alone in his quiet room. No challenge at all for his servants never asked him to go anywhere or do anything. He was not in the kitchen to watch how the food was cooked; he was never in parlor to look at the design of his clothes; He never counted his money and wonder how much is in the bank. "What good are all these things?" He said, "I didn't even enjoy what I have." The rich man sighed with discontent and sat again in his gloomy room. In a faraway land, there lived an average man. He worked eight hours a day and lived in cozy, happy and sweet home. He's got an average life and a perfect family. They all know the value of the little money they had by counting and allotting each penny for what they need. The food that they are about to eat is just enough to feed each one, so they thank God for it, and left nothing in the pan. Everything is average, but life is exciting for this average man. One day, this man went to his work. He cooked for the rich man; his good at it. But somehow, he noticed for the past week, most of his dishes were not even touch by his master. For a while, he thought he did not like his cooking anymore. Afraid to lose his, he found a way to talk to his master. The average man took a piece of paper in which he wrote, “Enjoy your meal, sir!" and placed it on the serving tray, hoping hid master would read it. Then, later in the afternoon, the tray was sent back to the kitchen and the food wasn't eaten at all. The piece of paper was still there. The next morning, the average man prepared another breakfast for his master. Again, he took a piece of paper in which he wrote, “Good morning sir, enjoy your breakfast." Then later on, the tray went back to the kitchen and no food was eaten at all. The average man was very worried the, and for the last time, he prepared something different - a soup without vegetable and meat, mashed potatoes without milk,
  • 13. and fried chicken that was not properly cooked. Then he took a piece of paper in which he wrote, "Enjoy your greatest meal sir!" Later, the letter was sent back to the kitchen and much to the average man's surprise, part of the food was eaten and the piece of the paper came back with the note at the back, “Your soup is bland and bare, your mashed potatoes don't have milk and you chicken is raw!" The following day, the average man cooks different meal for his master. This time, he prepared a vegetable salad without any dressing, chicken soup with chicken's feet and candy for dessert. When the man saw the tray later, he was shocked to find the food was all eaten and the piece of paper came back that said, “You need dressing in your salad, more salt in your soup and pastries for dessert!" When the man read the note, he smiled and made his way back to the kitchen. The rich man said, "Who is cooking my food? The man replied," It is I sir." "You see," the rich man continued, "your food is worst!" Upon hearing that, the average man started to explain, “Tell me master how to cook better, for you know better than I do." Then, he began to show the rich man around the kitchen. "How nice of you to come to see me?" said the average man, "Now show me how you want the food to taste." Then the rich man showed the average man’s how to make soup, mashed potato, fried chicken and many more. During that time, The rich man learned to use the pantry and memorized its content. He likewise learned how to appreciate food And how to prepare them. Soon, the rich man started to wonder how to appreciate food and hoe to prepare then. Soon, the rich man started to wonder how his clothes and shoes were made. so he visited his tailor and they talked. He called his accountant and discussed about money. And his room became lively and busy since then he always called on his servants to ask what is going on around the house. Everything now is under his control. That made the rich man a powerful man.
