METHODS AND APPROACHES TO/OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE
TEACHING
English is the most widely studied foreign language around the world.
Methods/Methodologies: Methods/methodologies refer to the combination of
techniques used by the teachers/English teachers to teach.
Approaches: Approaches refer to philosophies of educationists/teachers about
teaching or English language teaching, that can be applied in the classrooms or
English language classrooms by using different techniques of teaching or English
language teaching.
For teaching and especially English language teaching methods make base for the
applicable techniques for the teachers. The knowledge of method becomes base of
successful teaching.
METHODS OF ENGLISH LANGUAGE TEACHING:
1. GRAMMAR TRANSLATION METHOD:
 It is a classical and traditional method of teaching a language.
 This method relies on translation of text in (L1) (first language).
 This method is strongly beneficial for English literature students in a way
that they get a strong grip on English grammar.
2. DIRECT METHOD:
 This method revolves around directly thinking, doing discussions and
conversations in second language.
 Direct method demands the learners to do oral communication in the
second language.
 Direct method is successful in private English language schools because:
this method is and can be easy to apply in small classes or English language
classes where all the learners can get individual attention.
 Students can learn to excel the proper accent of (L2) (second language,
English).
 The success of the direct method depends on the teacher’s teaching skills.
3. STRUCTURAL APPROACH:
 Structural approach is all about organization.
2
 It is all about the arrangement of words in such organized and suitable
patterns that can pave way for the clarification of the meanings of a
language/English language or (that can make the meanings of the language
clear to us.
4. ORAL APPROACH/SITUATIONAL LANGUAGE TEACHING:
 This approach focuses on the communication skills from the vocabulary
that students have about the second language/English language.
 Apart from this the students get additional support from their context to
understand and use the second language/English language.
5. AUDIOLINGUAL METHOD:
 This teaching method revolves around teaching of the oral skills with
accurate pronunciation and grammar.
 It also focuses on reading and writing skills and fluency of English
communication.
6. TOTAL PHYSICAL RESPONSE:
 It follows the idea of learning by the teacher’s instructions and actions.
 Beginners will learn (L2) English through a series of repetitive instructions
and actions of the teachers/English teachers. Such as ‘a teacher saying
stand up, open your books, close the door, walk to the window and open
it, attempt this question etc.’
7. COMMUNICATIVE LANGUAGE TEACHING:
 Communicative language teaching focuses on polishing/improving the
ability of communication in learners in real life situations.
 This type of language teaching involves focusing on important functions
like; suggesting, thanking, inviting and asking for directions etc.
8. TASK BASED LANGUAGE TEACHING:
 It is more practical approach towards English language teaching.
 This language teaching methodology upholds that tasks are the major units
of language or English language learning.
 Relevant and interesting tasks are set by the language teachers and students
are expected to complete the task with their preexisting knowledge of
3
English language, consulting their English textbooks, consulting English
dictionaries, consulting the internet websites and by group discussions.
 In this way they learn the (L2), second language/English language.
