2. “Cost-effective Offshore Wind
Measurement” as part of the
‘Measurements’ strand of the con-
ference that gave special attention
to LiDAR instruments, and their
potential to reduce uncertainty as
well as reduce the costs of onshore
and offshore wind measurements.

Emma’s presentation, please see

Oldbaum’s Data Scientist Dr Emma
Coutts travelled to Helsinki at the
beginning of June to speak at a
workshop hosted by the European
Wind Energy Association (EWEA)
on Resource Assessment Technol-
ogy. The focal point of this year’s
event was how to deal with and
reduce uncertainty.
Emma gave a presentation entitled

Turbine performance optimization: Oldbaum’s work with Nacelle LiDARs
Current practice for the assessment
of wind turbine operating
performance is based on
anemometers mounted behind the
rotor blades. This causes the
measurements of this anemometer
to be affected by complex
aerodynamic effects caused by the
motion of the turbine rotor blade and
the shape of the nacelle.
A solution for this problem is a
LiDAR mounted on the nacelle of a
turbine as it is able to measure the
wind as it comes onto the rotor
blades in air unaffected by the
turbine.
The novel data which is collected
can then be used to investigate and
maximize turbine yield and have a
significant impact on Operations &
Maintenance by decreasing
asymmetric loading.
Nacelle LiDARs have been widely
used onshore and offshore in a
number of applications. These
include:
Upstream wind speed with the
accuracy of a 1st class
anemometer
Power performance assessments
equivalent to IEC 61400-12-1
Yaw misalignment studies
Calibration of nacelle mounted
anemometer and wind vane to
upstream values
Examination of terrain effects and
the turbine induction zone
Site calibration in complex terrain
Turbulence and wake effect
studies
Normally, more than one of these
measurement goals can be achieved
simultaneously, meaning that more
value can be extracted from the data
collected during a single
measurement campaign.
A typical measurement campaign
therefore can assess how well a
turbine is currently performing,
gather data required to optimize
performance, inform turbines control
strategies, and verify the
effectiveness of any changes made.
The LiDAR’s position on the Nacelle
allows it to gather data for all turbine
orientations meaning that
performance can be quickly
optimized for various wind sectors
and wind conditions.
Nacelle LiDARs effectively
help to optimize turbine
performance and increase
yield.
3. Oldbaum Services is a wind energy consultancy, with roots tracing back
to 2003. In 2003 Technical Director Andy Oldroyd won a Green Energy
Award whilst working for Chillwind for introducing a new measurement
technique (Sound Detecting and Ranging or SoDAR) to the wind
industry sector.
Andy, and his fellow Director Monica Griesbaum, have continued to
bring innovation and rigour to the wind industry, pioneering quality
control and wind sensor use with such novel techniques as LiDAR and
SoDAR.
Our company and experience has continued through involvement in
innovative high profile projects such as the Beatrice Offshore Wind
Demonstrator, and has been recognised by Oldbaum Services winning
an EC FP7 bid for the NORSEWInD Programme, with Andy Oldroyd as
Coordinator.
NORSEWInD is a € 7 million project designed to deliver offshore wind
atlases for the Baltic, Irish and North Sea areas based on physical data.
The data is acquired from met masts, LiDARs located offshore and
satellite based datasets. The result is a highly innovative project
reducing uncertainty in offshore development by easing access to data
for offshore developers.
Oldbaum Services is part of the Leosphere Wind Experts programme,
and has been working with all forms of LiDAR since 2005. Oldbaum
have designed acceptance tests and measurement campaigns for all
forms of LiDAR (Continuous wave or pulse) and therefore has a unique
perspective and experience in the unique challenges posed by each
system type.
