How Flexible Packaging Can Drive Savings & Efficiency-Robert Reinders, Performance Packaging
1. Interview with: Robert Reinders,
President, Performance Packaging
“Typically, flexible packaging is the most
cost effective package for a product, but
companies can drive even larger savings
by looking at how it can increase
production line efficiency and speed to
market,” says Robert Reinders,
President, Performance Packaging.
Performance Packaging is a sponsor
company at the marcus evans
EuroPack Summit 2016 and the
AmericaPack Summit 2017.
What is troubling packaging
directors today?
They are trying to figure out a way to
have more sustainable packaging, while
keeping costs and functionality in line.
Educating consumers on the benefits of
flexible packaging is also proving
difficult. All the positive attributes of
flexible packaging, how it prolongs
product shelf life and reduces food
wastage, do not seem to make it to
their awareness. The awareness in the
US is even less than in Europe.
What are the biggest trends in the
packaging world today?
There has been large growth in aseptic
packaging. In this market, there is a
need for shelf stable products that have
better quality, better nutrition, are not
cooked or processed as much but still
could be shelf stable. The technology we
have introduced Pixie Dust TM allows
the same type of aseptic filling to be
done in flexible packaging, in a much
quicker timeframe and a smaller
machinery footprint. It will be more
effective, in terms of plant utilisation,
equipment cost and throughput on
machinery.
Aseptic packaging will provide a better
tasting, more nutritious and better
looking product, and have more colour
than the current traditional hot fill post
pasteurisation type methods that are
available.
What is the best way to identify the
right packaging materials for
products?
This is where packaging directors need
to have a good working relationship
with their suppliers, so they can
understand their needs in terms of shelf
life required, throughput on machinery,
etc. There are many factors to consider.
How can companies better identify
what consumers are looking for?
We have a pretty good picture of what
consumers want from their packaging.
As the population is aging, ease of use,
functionality, ability to open and re-seal,
with arthritic hands for example, are all
key areas. This population wants large
fonts and clean designs. In the
meantime, the millennials are very in
tune with natural and healthy products,
so they look for packaging that
resonates with that and are driving the
push for sustainability.
The perfect package would be one that
addresses all these needs.
How can cost be taken out of
packaging operations and help
companies increase their margins?
When companies look at cost, flexible
packaging is definitely attractive as it is
cost efficient. But where flexible
packaging can give them a bigger bang
for their buck is by using it to increase
speed and line efficiency. That is how
flexible packaging makes a big
difference. Even if they have to spend a
little more money on their packaging,
the gains and efficiencies on the line will
far outweigh that.
