The Universal Peace Federation is developing an alliance of organizations and individuals aligned with core universal principles in order to create a new momentum for peace.
Universal principles apply in all times and places. They establish the common ground for a diverse peoples to cooperate.
The third universal principle is that the family is the school of peace and love . We learn many things in life, and our educational system conveys important knowledge to our youth. But the most important education is the education of the heart . The most important thing that we need to learn as human beings is how to give and receive love, how to get along as brothers and sisters . These lessons are best learned in the family .
Ambassadors for Peace affirm and work to strengthen families – to promote strong, loving, and healthy marriages. Summary of research about the benefits of marriage: For Children: Parental divorce reduces the likelihood that children will graduate from college, and achieve high-status jobs. Children who live with their own two married parents enjoy better physical health, on average, than children in other family forms. The health advantages of married homes remain even after taking into account socioeconomic status. Parental divorce approximately doubles the odds that adult children will end up divorced. For Men: Married men earn between 10 and 40 percent more than single men with similar education and job histories. Married people, especially married men, have longer life expectancies than otherwise similar singles. Marriage increases the likelihood fathers will have good relationships with children. Sixty-five percent of young adults whose parents divorced had poor relationships with their fathers (compared to 29% from non-divorced families). For Women: Divorce and unmarried childbearing significantly increases poverty rates of both mothers and children. Between one-fifth and one-third of divorcing women end up in poverty as a result of divorce. Married mothers have lower rates of depression than single or cohabiting mothers. Married women appear to have a lower risk of domestic violence than cohabiting or dating women. Cohabiting partners are three times more likely to report violent arguments than married people. • The family is the common experience for people of all cultures. Therefore, the family provides a common ground that can link people from different nationalities, cultures or philosophical traditions. • Parents who express true love to their children and manifest the heart of God in their relationships can be called “true parents.” Loving families are the foundation of a healthy society, and parents are the center and source of such a loving family. Parents are the leaders of the family; parents are the the source of structure and order in the family. In effect the “governance” of the family is based around parents.
The fourth principle is that “living for the sake of others ” enables reconciliation of the divided human family. It’s a very simple principle, but one that we tend to forget and fail to apply. In an individualistic society, people are encouraged to think about “me” and be concerned about themselves first. But this fundamentally misses the basic principle of reciprocity in our world of interdependence. In serving the purpose of the whole – in “living for others” - the purpose of the individual is naturally included, because we are part of the whole.
The final principle says that peace comes through cooperation beyond the boundaries of ethnicity, religion and nationality . Religious traditions are the bedrock and beginning point of cultures. We also know that in our world today, there are glaring examples of great violence done in the name of religion. However, each religious tradition contains wisdom that helps create a common ground for people of faith to cooperate for the common good.
• When the individual lives for the sake of the family and the family prospers, the individual is included in the family and thus experiences the well-being and prosperity of the family. • The same applies to the family living for the sake of the community, the community for the sake of the nation, and the nation for the sake of the world. Our world is led by the United Nations, which is a gathering of the nations of the world. Think about the limitations of an association of nation-states whose fundamental motivation is to develop their own national self interest. If we gather together but are working for our own national self interest, something is missing. How radical it would be if leaders of the world asked, “How can my nation give of itself freely for the benefit of the world at large?”
We believe that now is the time when people of faith are called to stand on common ground, overcome divisions and barriers, and work together for the common good of humankind.
Thus, Ambassadors for Peace affirm basic principles that foster peace: 1. We are one human family ... 2. The highest qualities of human beings are ... 3. The family is the .. 4. “Living for the sake of others” ... 5. Peace comes through cooperation ... If these principles resonate with you, we urge and ask you to link arms with us as Ambassadors for Peace. If you feel a concern in your heart as I do about the future of humankind and you feel that there is a turning point that we all face at this moment – we want to join together and work together. There is a dream, there is a vision for peace. To make that dream real requires the efforts of us all. Ambassadors for Peace link up to create synergy. We experience the power of that synergy time and time again. That intangible power is not from you, or me. It’s a power from the Source of us all that I call God our Father, our Parent. That gives us hope for an entirely different future, a future of peace and harmony. We invite you to work with us together as an Ambassador for Peace to make that dream real.
This Ambassadors for Peace Initiative is a project of the Universal Peace Federation, founded by the Rev. Dr. Sun Myung Moon and Mrs. Hak Ja Han Moon.
