2. Collaboration Project with Theatre
Project Objective
• Students need to chose one character from the script and create its mask.
• Research the character and the story, interpret the story and the character in
your vision
• Draw at least 3 designs of the mask
• Fabricate a papier mache mask following the direction in the slide below
• Document your self-directed ideation/research process and present through in
the way to communicate with Theater (communication major) student
• Have a virtual or face to face meeting with the cast during the project

• Masks all over the world developed along with its environment.
Costume reflect its cultural aspect which also influenced by its
environment.
• Students need to be aware of the identity of the character and its
background.
• Mask can be a self-portrait, identify its character’s personality,
aesthetic, and yourself
6. Evolution of Theatre
from Religious Rituals
• The masks used in Ancient Greek Theater
had built in megaphones to project the
actor’s voices. Each mask represented a
character and showed an exaggerated
expression. All the masks were made of
organic materials; after a performance, all
the masks were sacrificed on the altar of
Dionysus.

9. Collaboration Ethic
Your project’s success depends on effective collaboration. To success
this collaboration project, students must follow the directions
1. Have a virtual or face to face meeting with the cast during the
project to communicate with the casts who are also expresser
2. Get know;
1. who is going to wear your mask
2. what they think of the character
3. Always Keep In Touch!!!!!!
10. The Stage
• Following the traditional Greek
Theatre and for safety, The play
will be held in the open area
(outside) in Doc Brain.
• The Play will be in January 2021.
12. The Bacchae
• The tragedy is based on the Greek myth of King
Pentheus of Thebes and his mother Agave, and
their punishment by the god Dionysus (who is
Pentheus’s cousin)
13. Characters
• Dionysus --- god of wine and fun, male*
• Pentheus --- young man, prince of Thebes, a bit of a prude
• Cadmus --- Pentheus's grandfather, wise
• Agave --- Cadmus's daughter, Pentheus's mother, she gets a little wild at the Baccanalia and beheads her son
• Teiresias -- old man prophet, blind*
• Two guard/messenger types --- male, costumed similarly or the same*
• Leader of chorus --- a middle-aged woman, costumed very similar to the chorus with a slight difference
• Chorus --- 4 or 6 women (an even number), costumed all the same
The * indicates a male character who may be played by a female. The character will still be male, if that makes
sense. Other characters will be cast according to gender.
14. Dionysus
• Dionysus (Roman Name: Bacchus) was the ancient Greek
god of wine, merriment, and theatre. Being the bad boy of
Mt. Olympus, he was perhaps the most colorful of the
Olympian Gods.
• In Greek mythology, despite being the son of Zeus and
Semele (*a daughter of Cadmus, the first King of Thebes) of
, Dionyosus was almost killed by the queen of Zeus, his
mother died while still pregnant. Zeus rescued the unborn
Dionysus by sewing him into his thigh and he was born
from Zeus’s thigh.
15. Pentheus
• Pentheus is a prince of Thebes
(*where an ancient Egyptian city
was located).
• Pentheus and Dionysus are both
grandsons of old Cadmus (*First
king of Thebes)
16. Cadmus
• Former king od Thebes, father of
Agaue (Agave), grandfather of
Pentheus and Dionysus. He is
wise and the only one in his
family to declare allegiance to
Dionysus
• .
17. Agave
• Mother of Pentheus and
daughter of Cadmus (Theban
princess). Agave is already one
of the maenads (a worshipper of
Dionysus participating in
orgiastic rites, from the
Greek mainad to be mad) at the
start of the play. Even though
she only enters the play at the
very end, her scene is the most
powerful and tragic in the play.
18. Teiresias
• Tiresias is an old blind prophet. He is piety and makes
a brief reference to what is to come and serves as a
voice of wisdom. He does not have a large role in this
play, but he create foreshadowing and portrays the
message to be taken away. He is paralleled at the end
by Cadmus, who heard “Tiresias” words and suffered
the destruction of his family, who restates the
importance of piety, but this is only a reflection of the
message and warning that he gives at the beginning.
19. Soldier of Pentheus / Two Messengers
• Two guards and messenger are male and costumed similarly or same
• Guards - capture the stranger and bring him to Pentheus in Scene II
• Messenger - Anonymous witness in the play. The first messenger is a
cowherd who spies on the maenads and comes back to relate the
incident to Pentheus. The second messenger accompanied Pentheus
and Dionysus up the mountain and witnessed the death of his king.
He returns to the palace to relate the event to the chorus.
20. Chorus
• Leader of chorus - a middle-aged woman,
costumed very similar to the chorus with a
slight difference.
• Chorus --- 4 or 6 women (an even number),
costumed all the same
• Chorus – Female bacchants from Lydia (was
an Iron Age kingdom of western Asia), led by
Dionysus in his human form as the Stranger.
21. One style & megaphone form
• This project is open to different types
of masks, although they should all be of a
similar style though not look.
• Masks should have megaphone-ish mouths
to help project the sound. Actors will wear
surgical masks under the costumes to
protect the audience from COVID. Actors
will play outside so again, the megaphone /
acoustic nature of the masks is important.

1. Modeling out of Clay

Vaseline and plastic bag
(*we use plastic bag instead
of the release agent)
