e With the Bharatiya Janata Party “boycotting” Union Home Minister P.
w Chidambaram over his alleged role in the 2G controversy and pressing
s for an adjournment motion on the black money issue, UPA government
managers on Tuesday turned to the Left to try and find a way to ward
off a looming standoff on prices that could lead to the ruling
dispensation being censured in Parliament.
The government's hopes are based on notices given by Mr. Dasgupta
and Mr. Acharia for a simple short duration discussion on prices.
Delhi
Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pawan Bansal has jumped at this
suggestion, telling reporters: “We will have this discussion on prices
tomorrow (Wednesday).”
Despite the government's optimism about the Left, the CPI(M) did not
sound at all relenting. “The government should answer why it is not
taking steps [to control prices] and since it is not doing so, we want a
discussion that entails voting in the Rajya Sabha and an adjournment
motion in the Lok Sabha … our focus is price rise in both the Houses,”
Mr. Yechury and Mr. Acharia said at a press conference.

n The last time blood flowed so freely in Cairo's
e Tahrir Square, the battle lines were simple to
w discern: Last January's showdown was a classic
s people vs. the regime battle to oust President
Hosni Mubarak, with the Army stepping in at the world
crucial moment to ease out the strongman. But
the ongoing battle for control of the Square that
has, since last Saturday, claimed 33 lives and
wounded at least 1,500 — and on Monday
appeared also to force the resignation of the
transitional cabinet appointed by the generals --
is part of an increasingly bloody battle for power
in post-Mubarak Egypt, with more complex lines
of division

n The Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) announced a ceasefire on
Tuesday evening, claiming the move was part of peace talks with
e the government. The ceasefire announcement — made through
w telephone calls to international news agencies based here —
s came a few hours after the Army categorically denied Monday's
reports of it being in negotiations with the TTP and its affiliate
groups.
Reacting to Monday's reports, Interior Minister Rehman Malik said Pakistan
earlier in the day on Tuesday that dialogue had been offered to
the terrorists but no further movement was possible in this
direction unless they laid down their arms and give up terrorism
“There is nothing formal regarding talks with Taliban. Taliban
usually send messages to us and I also sometimes convey to them
a message so that peace can prevail. But it is clear if the Taliban
wants to shake hands with us they will have to get rid of their
arms,” he was quoted as saying by the Associated Press of
Pakistan.

n Pakistan's Ambassador to the United States Husain Haqqani
e resigned on Tuesday after presenting his case in the
“memogate” scandal before the country's civil and military
w leadership. A detailed enquiry has also been ordered by
s Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani into the controversy
over allegations that Mr. Haqqani had sent a memo to the
former U.S. Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman, Mike Mullen, Pakistan
seeking Washington's intervention in preventing a coup in
Pakistan after the Abbottabad operation.
His resignation gave credence to speculation that the
military — which has always remained in charge,
particularly in matters of foreign policy and security — has
had its way. Who will be Pakistan's next Ambassador in
Washington is the big question and the selection will
indicate if the military had its way again. In fact, Mr.
Haqqani himself had said last week — after being recalled
to Islamabad — that he was being vilified for opposing
military interference in political affairs.

t The original FIR filed by the Detection of Crime Branch,
Ahmedabad, after its men shot dead Ishrat Jahan and three
others on June 15, 2004, projects its officers as heroes who had
n trailed the four and waylaid their car, faced gunfire from one of
e them and shot back in “self-defence” to kill all four “terrorists”.
w The FIR, which is against all four, names Zeeshan Johar alias
s Janbaaz alias Abdulgani of Pakistan; Amjadali Akbarali Rana alias
Salim alias Chandu alias Rajkumar, also of Pakistan; and Javed AHMEDABAD
(Sheikh) of Pune. Ishrat is described as a “woman terrorist whose
name and address were not known” (an identity card later
helped establish that she was Ishrat Jahan of Khalsa College,
Mumbai).
The supposed encounter, which a three-member Special
Investigation Team appointed by the Gujarat High Court has
unanimously concluded as fake, and the events leading to it are
described from the first “tip-off” to the killing. The complainant
in the FIR (I-CR No 08/2004) was J G Parmar, then a DCB police
inspector and now possibly set to become an accused.
