2. Requirements of the Brief
The requirements of the brief for this project is to create a short documentary film for the BBC , showcasing
the ‘culture in the digital age.’ The new partnership between BBC Three and BBC England, is launching
Northern Voices, this new partnership is inviting independent production companies from the local area to
submit ideas that reflect the life of a 16-24 year old. The aim of this is to engage young people and make
them thing about the impact of the digital age on their life's and culture. For this project, I need to make a
short documentary giving a teaser on what a longer one could be like, the documentary will be around 10
minutes long. I will attend a number of workshops to help develop skills that are needed to prepare for the
documentary, throughout the process I will explore the potential and limitations of these skills to develop
my response and ideas to the theme ‘my culture’.
3. My Ideas
My potential ideas for this project is:
- Music, I could show how social media and how the changes
in the digital world and technology effect music and the
popularity, and how different types of music have came to
popularity through digital technology (techno etc)
- Social Media, I could do the impact of social media, the pros
and cons of social media and link it to lots of different
aspects of youth culture like music and art. I could talk
about the dangers of social media and how there's new
careers for social media.
4. Potential Constraints
The potential constraints of this project is the time management with the models and the times of the shoots and also
with the potential locations. The other constraint for this project would be doing things like the layout of the documentary
and collecting the right scenes, every scene will have to be thought you and depending on what subject I choose, I will
have to collect lots of different information and research which will take time and I will need to plan on what information I
need for the documentary, to help with this I will plan very well and do drafts and experimentation so I know how to lay
things out the best they can be and I will plan interviews etc and have a better understanding on what the best way to
interview someone and what key information to include in my documentary. For the BBC there is potential constraints as
there is principles that the BBC follows, there is the Reithian principles inform, educate and entertain, John Reithian also
decided when the BBC was just founded in 1922 that there would be no TV or films on Sunday morning as he assumed
that people would be in Church, his strong principles are still followed by the BBC (except from the Sunday morning view) I
need to follow these principles and consider them when scheduling my documentary. There is also more principles, there
is the uses and gratification theory (Katz & Bulmer) : Diversion: escape from routine or problems; emotional release;
Personal relationships: companionship; social utility; Personal identity: self reference; reality exploration; value reinforces;
and Surveillance (forms of information seeking), the constraints with this is that it would be very easy top forget these
principles so avoid that I will keep going back and checking that my documentary fits each principle.
