Book summary
Alice in Wonderland is a children’s book written by Charles Dodgson and Lewis Carroll. It
tells of a girl named Alice falling through a rabbit hole into a fantasy world populated
by creatures with human characters. The tale plays with logic, giving the story lasting
popularity with adults as well as with children. It is considered to be one of the best examples
of the literary nonsense genre. Its narrative course and structure, characters and imagery have
been enormously influential in both popular culture, literature, and in the fantasy genre.
Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland takes place in Alice’s dream and the characters and
phenomena of the real world mix with elements of Alice’s unconscious state. The dream
explains the abundance of nonsensical and disparate events in the story.
Extract From: Alice in Wonderland story
“Alice was beginning to get very tired of sitting by her sister on the bank, and of having
nothing to do: once or twice she had peeped into the book her sister was reading, but it had
no pictures or conversations in it, “and what is the use of a book,” thought Alice, “without
pictures or conversations? So she was considering, in her own mind whether the pleasure of
3 | P a g e
making a daisy-chain would be worth the trouble of getting up and picking the daisies, when
suddenly a White Rabbit with pink eyes ran close by her.
There was nothing so very remarkable in that; nor did Alice think it so very much out of the
way to hear the Rabbit say to itself “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late but, when the
Rabbit actually took a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket, and looked at it, and then hurried
on, Alice started to her feet, for it flashed across her mind that she had never before seen a
rabbit with either a waistcoat-pocket, or a watch to take out of it, and, burning with curiosity,
she ran across the field after it, and was just in time to see it pop down a large rabbit-hole
under the hedge.”
Here on this extract Alice (in Chapter one) is sitting drowsily by a riverbank, bored by the
book her older sister reads to her. Out of nowhere, a White Rabbit runs past her, fretting as is
it will be late. The Rabbit pulls a watch out of his waistcoat pocket and runs across the field
and down a hole. Alice impulsively follows the Rabbit and tumbles down the deep hole that
resembles a well, falling slowly for a long time.
 This extract is valid and important in teaching children literature because first and
foremost the extract is about protagonist who is young and developing in which it will
help children being able to relate and develop as well.
 The extract depicts power and purpose which is seen in Alice and how she uses it in
influencing other characters.
 The extract clearly demonstrates between good and evil, and matter of time. The fact that
Alice moves from place to place while faced with situations to deal with effectively
highlights moralistic conformation and purpose.
 Promotes the love of reading on the children
 It develops cognitive and analysing skills for the children to perform better in their
literature studies
 Promotes fun an entertainment in the classroom.
 It reinforces their emotional intelligence and creativity.
 It provides an avenue for children to learn about their own cultural heritage and the
cultures of other people.
 It Helps children to develop emotional intelligence and decision making skills.
 It nurtures growth and development of the children personality and social skills.
